I was thinking the same thing, Skillet..Hell, I'm younger than Doc and I don't even buy green bananas anymore.

At 50 or 100 yards it is insignificant with a firearm. If you are shooting up or down at sharp angles ( say 45 degrees or more) and longish ranges, it might be worth considering.

Eat a beaver, save a tree..

Back in the day, I used to drag 'em out for the old guys. Now I IS the old guys..If I am hunting alone and can't the machine close to 'em, I don't shoot 'em.. One exception is the place I hunt in PA...It's downhill all the way to the truck.

My buddy and I got two hoppers yesterday, I was 1 for 2 and he was 1 for 1.. Started the first rabbit about ten minutes after we began hunting and the hounds ran steady for 4 hours. We killed two, missed one and the other one holed up. One rabbit led a charmed life..The dogs started him and he got by my buddy without offering a shot..He ran by me right in the open, but I was busy cleaning another rabbit and my shotgun was leaned up against a tree ten feet away. He circled again and I saw him but could not get a shot. He circled again and I missed him with both barrels of my 20 gauge. He circled again and I had a clear look at him, but he was right in line with the road so I could not shoot. Never did get the SOB...<<grin>>.. Both rabbits we killed were nice big, healthy looking bunnies and were larded with fat..Never saw so much fat on a rabbit in February...Must be the mild winter.

Geeze, real...You don't have to get personal about your love life... So what are you eating during the game ?

What's on Your (not hunting or fishing related) Bucket List?

I'm sure all you have to do is ask..Growie is very generous with her (considerable) knowledge.. -
On 107 acres in Steuben Co. I killed a buck and a doe and my two guests each killed a buck. Oh yeah..The property is in 8X.

One of my old fart retired buddies is coming over , along with The Mermaid's son and daughter in law... I am doing BBQ baby back pork ribs, cut into singles for finger food...Besides that we're having chips and dips and the DIL ( who is Phillipina) will probably make some of her homemade egg rolls. And, of course BEER...Plus maybe a touch of SKULL VARNISH in a dried beef glass if the game gets exciting..

Good thought, Rob, and I have been considering a shelf.... Actually, I have one that would work well... Back in the 1930s, my great grandfather came into possession of some black walnut, and decided that he would build his own coffin from it. Lo and behold, the old gent kicked the bucket before he got the coffin finished. I am not sure WHAT he got buried in. However, my grandfather's brother ( my great uncle) took pieces of the walnut lumber and built shelves out of it, and gave a shelf to each member of the family. I have the shelf that was given to my paternal grandfather, who probably never even saw a wild turkey, since he died in 1967... It may just be a very fitting way to display my box calls..

My 101 is my SECOND favorite box call nowadays...It was my #1 choice for years...I bought it in 1977 at Henyan's Sporting Goods in Corning...Doug Henyan had about a dozen of them and he let me take each one out of the cardboard box ( no blister pacs back then) and run it to pick out the one I liked the best. It cost me $17.. It was my GO TO box call until I had a custom box by Bob Harwell in South Carolina in 2003...Bob learned his call making skills working with Neil Cost , and his calls are pretty much clones of Neil's boxes.. It has become, far and away, my favorite box and I have killed a bunch of birds with it..However, I still always carry my old 101 Foolproof, because sometimes that old gobbler likes just a little different tone..
-
I am in the process of rearranging my gun/hunting room...I have limited space.. I have a modest collection of box calls (14) and I would like to display them, keeping in mind that they be accessible, because I still use several of for hunting.... Anybody got any good ideas for a nice way to show off my calls and still keep them accessible for use ?

What's on Your (not hunting or fishing related) Bucket List?

Oh yeah, regarding Wildcat's original question.. There has never BEEN anything on my bucket list that did not involve hunting or fishing..... -
What's on Your (not hunting or fishing related) Bucket List?
Pygmy replied to wildcat junkie's topic in General Chit Chat
I have been pretty fortunate...I have done a fair amount of STUFF involving hunting and fishing, mostly DIY and fairly low budget.. If I croak tonite, there aren't too many things that I have wanted to do and have not done...When my Dad suffered a stroke at an early age ( a month after he retired) my Mom told me that if there was anything I wanted to do and could afford it, DO IT while I still could... Good advice from Mom... I have had some pretty special adventures in some pretty awesome places since then. I do not regret doing ANY of them and I treasure the memories that I have. Age and a fixed income have taken their toll...There are a couple of things on my "TO DO" list that will never happen now, like a Sitka Blacktail hunt on Kodiak and a mountain goat hunt... Oh well...In the big picture, I have been there, done that and have the T-shirt...I am happy for my memories and memorabilia and the fact that I am still able to hunt and fish here close to home. -
I have eaten scrapple and was not especially fond of it. Taylor ham....Sounds kind of familiar, but I am not sure. I had some "country ham" last September in North Carolina, and it was OBNOXIOUSLY salty, and I like salt !

When Does Less Equal More?

That is a beautiful rifle.....I drool every time Wildcat posts a picture of it... I am hoping that he leaves it to me in his will, just in case he kicks the bucket before I do......<< dum, de dum >>..... -
......K I S S.... For the shooting that most of us do within 400 yards, all that junk just confuses things... Beyond that range, I don't care...

Shucks, Wildcat, I'll give you TWO Rem 783s for it, but you'll have to throw in the scope, sling and dies...<<wink>>.... -
The Mermaid won't buy it either...Fortunately I do the grocery shopping...That way I always have a can of Spam tucked away in the pantry for the days when I am having lunch alone.

If you think the barrel looks long, you could send it to Stubby ( Whelen7600) and he'll hacksaw the barrel off to 16 inches.. Or you could send the rifle to ME, and I will hug it and love it and cherish it and name it GEORGE... -

The smaller scope definitely looks sweeter and better balanced...I'm starting to chub up just looking at the picture. Only pimps and Marines ( Seagoing bellhops) use scopes with big objective lenses...<<grin>>.... it's a sign of inadequacy... -
Careful, Paula darlin'.....You'll get us old farts aroused.....

hehehe...Old Fat Father is an affectionate nickname that he gave himself..... He once referred to himself as my " Old fat Father" and it stuck.... He stood 5'6" and weighed maybe 140 soaking wet.... New friends would give me strange looks when I introduced him to them as " Fat Father".... I like to think that I inherited some of his sense of humor as my heritage... He was my hero...
