Actually, Larry you could leave the owl call at home and just use the crow call. Despite what many hunters think, gobblers will gobble at a crow call ( or a car horn or ANYTHING loud) well before fly down and think nothing of it. Runnin' N Gunnin' is how I killed the vast majority of my gobblers..Actually, it was more like " walkin' N Talkin"..I would cover several miles on foot morning after morning trolling for an active bird. I did this day after day during the spring season for many years.I was fortunate to have many hundreds of acres of land available for me to hunt. I've slowed down the last 5 or 6 years, though...Spending lots more time sitting on my butt . I'm really beginning to like it..I get more time for NAPS and still manage to kill a turkey now and then

My natural voice owling is not that great, and my results have not been that great as far as getting gobblers to sound off..I have tried a couple of owl hooters and they aren't that great either. However, I have a couple of buddies who can owl VERY well, and I have been impressed with their results...Once again, sometimes a general approximation of a REAL call will get results, but day in and day out AUTHENTIC calling gets the job done...The guys who sound like a REAL turkey get results..The guys who sound like a REAL owl, get results.. I don't use locators on an everyday basis, but personally I have had best results with a good,LOUD, raspy open reed crow call.

Geeze, I must have have missed a whole bunch of stuff... Of course, I am just a semi-senile old fart.. I just get on here because I like to talk hunting and I also enjoy having a few laughs now and then.

The guy who was the main game warden around here for many years was legendary. He would lay on his belly in the mud all night long to make a bust. I was checked perhaps a dozen times by this guy and never once did I have any idea he was around until he jumped out of a bush or popped out from behind a tree. He worked hard and must have loved his job. I don't even know the name/names of the local fish cops nowadays, but I guarantee you that back when he was working as a game warden, EVERYBODY who hunted or fished in southern Steuben County knew HIS name..

Yes I have, once by a goshawk and a couple of times by Cooper's hawks. There is a nest on state land near here where the DEC has put up signs near it warning of a goshawk nest. As far as hawks attacking turkeys, I once saw a red tail attack an adult hen turkey. He dove and hit her right in the middle of the back, then peeled away. No harm done as far as I could tell, but she was one pissed off turkey.

Trust me.... We OLD DOGS cannot tolerate the bitter cold as well as we once could... Just one item on a LONG LIST of things we can't do as well as we used to.

Biz....Perhaps FSW will take you out...He has some pretty awesome turkey hunting up there, and you won't even need to bring a call ! -
WTF ?? You people are paying more for your shoes than I have paid for most of my GUNS...
-
No, I'm a white boy....

Never bought a used pair of shoes in my life. Some of them last a year or more... When they get shabby I use them for yard work or whatever. I use my CLEANEST pair as my " Sunday go to meetin'" sneakers. I don't own many shoes...One pair of "good" sneakers, a couple pairs of kick-arounds, and one pair of black leather dress shoes for weddings and funerals. Then of course, I have 4 pairs of hunting boots, a pair of hip waders and a pair of chest waders for the important stuff.

Most of the cases I throw away have cracked necks just like the one in your photo, Shawn. I have loaded a few when I did not realize they were cracked and they seemed to shoot OK. Most of my hunting loads are right up near max, and I usually start to see cracks after 5 or 6 loadings. Domestic brass such as Rem or Winchester crack with fewer loadings than high quality brass, like Lapua. I have never experienced a head separation.
-
I guess I'm out of the loop as far as sneakers go. I never paid more than $30 for a pair.
-
I had no idea that used sneakers could be worth so much. Now I wish I had kept my 1962 vintage PF Flyers...
-
I wouldn't know, Biz...I buy my sneakers at Wallyworld for $12.99....<<grin>>...

I always clean the sizing lube off the cases with an old rag or a paper towel and a little elbow grease....I do the inside of the case neck with a little nylon bore brush and wipe it clean of lube with a Q-tip. As far as I remember, I've never had a misfire or hangfire with any of my metallic handloads.

My laptop is less than a year old..Working fine so far. It replaced a Dell desktop that I had bought in early 2006. The Dell started making weird buzzing noises and died.
-
I have never cleaned my cases . It seemed like a "less than necessary" cosmetic step that would not affect the performance of my handloads. Then a couple of years ago Bubba and I swapped some components, including some cases...The ones he sent me were BEAUTIFUL and shiny, and I felt a little sheepish about sending him my grungey ones..<<BLUSH>>.. I intend to mend my sloppy ways and either get a tumbler or use the chemical methods that some of the posters here endorse.. I have been meaning to procrastinate about this, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

2nd grey of the season, crazy night
Pygmy replied to Chris B's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Cool account, Chris...Back in the late 70s/early 80s we used to call in a lot of greys here in Steuben...Our best night we killed 8...They were bringing $50 then, and reds were bringing $75, but we killed very few reds...They seemed a lot tougher to bring to the call and tended to hang out of range of our shotguns and #4 shot..Coyotes were not even heard of in this area at that time.
