I'll be 66 on St Patty's Day next month... I've been hunting LEGALLY for 52 years... I could tell you that my Old Fat Father allowed me to roam armed about his property for a number of years before I was old enough to have a hunting license, but I WON'T tell you that because I have never done anything illegal.

I love anchovies, but NOT on pizza... I'll open a can and eat them all day on crackers.. I also like them in salads, etc. Every year around the holidays, an Italian friend of mine gives me some hot peppers stuffed with anchovies and marinated in olive oil...GOOD STUFF !! I have tried doing them myself, but mine never tasted as good as his...

My lunch today was a can of sardines on saltine crackers garnished with some crushed hot pepper relish... Today I had skinless/boneless Gourmet Selects from Starkist, but probably my all time favorite are called LIGO and they come in a round can like a tomato paste can and are a product of the Phillipines... The Mermaid's daughter-in law is Phiilipina and picks them up for me at the local Oriental store for a buck a can.. They are in tomato sauce with chili added and are to die for..

I used to stash a couple cans of spam in the provisions on my hunting trips... On those occasions when we had hunted a couple of days and had no meat in camp, I'd slice and fry up the spam over the campfire ... All the guys who would have said YUCK ! to spam back in civilization thought it tasted pretty damn good in the wilderness... To me it tastes pretty good at home... The Mermaid says YUCK, however.. I'll bet she'd like it after about 3days out in the boonies eating nothing but dehydrated noodle mixes....<<grin>>..

You are my kind of gourmet, Dom ! I love fried spam sandwiches ....Along with a fried egg and maybe some cheese...YUM !!

I have six days head start on ya, TF.. I'll be hunting in Ontario on April 25th. For several years I hunted Kentucky, which opens about mid April.. Unfortunately, my honeyhole out there was leased out .. It was a sad loss...Without a doubt it was the best gobbler hunting I have ever experienced.. However, I still hunt every year NY, PA and Ontario, and since I am slowing down in my old age that's enough for me.

I had 3 different springers over the course of about 20 years, beginning in the early 70s. I spent lots of time training and hunting the first two, and did lots of bird and waterfowling with them By the time I acquired the third one, I was at a point in my life when I could afford to do an out of state DIY hunting trip every couple of years, and much of my hunting time and energy went into planning, training for, and executing those trips, so the dog became more of a family pet than a hunter. It has been about 25 years now since I had a bird dog. I certainly do miss those days. My gun dogging nowadays consists of hunting rabbits with one of my old buddies and his beagles.

I'm hunting bunnys Friday with my buddy and his two beagles.. Fished the river for walleyes this morning but caught just a huge carp....The jig was in his lip, but I don't know if he bit it or I just happened to snag him in the lip..

That may be true, Belo... Much of my time on here is spent killing time and entertaining myself, and hopefully, some other folks.. However, I have gleaned a HUGE amount of knowledge from the net over the last 20 years or so.. Perhaps it only amounted to 10 or 15% of my time on here, but it is certainly worthwhile... I remember researching out of state hunting trips in pre-internet days, when everything was done by mail or telephone.. I can get more good info in an hour now than I could get in a month back then.

You are OK,, Grampy.... You are hearby invited to go out with me and the guys who like low power/fixed power scopes to get drunk and pick up chicks...<<GRIN>>..

It's just fun for those of us who are interested in rifles and ballistics to enter into discussions like this. I always get involved, even though I know that there dozens of rifle/chambering combos out there that are equally effective on deer and similar sized game.
-
Yes it does, at least as far as single projectile shotgun ammo is concerned. There are some buckshot only zones in PA and I am not sure bout the legalities of semi shotguns there...All firearms firing single projectile ammo for ANY game must be manually operated. While auto shotguns are legal with small shot NO semi auto rifles or pistols are legal..That means you cannot even shoot squirrels or woodchucks with your Ruger 10-22 or shoot a coon out of a tree with your Colt Woodsman. Hehehehe..Just goes to show that NY does not have a monopoly on stupid game laws.
-
Discussions regarding the use of the .223 also take place in PA, where no semi auto firearms are legal for big game hunting.

Years ago when this area was still shotgun only for deer, a friend of mine swears that his dad was ticketed for having his bolt action shotgun muzzle down in the front of his pickup and the loaded detachable magazine on the dash..

Nope.....

Thanks, Wildcat....Never took the time to look up the proper pronunciation... The old boys with whom I worked weren't exactly English majors, either....<<SMILE>>...

Nearly all of the early elk seasons out west are held during the rut, so long shots are not necessary. When I hunted elk in Colorado with my MZ in 2004, iron sights were not much of a handicap. I killed my 6x6 at 20 yards and my partner killed a big 5x6 at 30 yards... Of course, we both had a few years of calling and bowhunting elk under our belts, so the MZ hunt was almost a slam dunk.

I appreciate the link with the complicated belt driven machinery. About 50 years ago I worked in a local woodworking shop that built a variety of wooden products , from simple wood pallets to tool handles... The shop was powered by a big gasoline engine ( which also powered the attached sawmill) and various machines were attached to a huge shaft via complicated gearing, leather belts, and bavit ( sp ?) bearings...

VERY cool, Wildcat...Thanks for the link..

I took my hunter safety course back when Christ was a carpenter, however I distinctly remember my instructor speaking of the " loaded long gun in a vehicle" regulation as a safety issue...And, indeed, I have heard of a number of instances over the years when some dimwit was maneuvering a loaded shotgun or rifle in a vehicle and ended up shooting a hole in the floor, the roof or perhaps his foot. Loaded handguns ? One prime purpose of a handgun is self defense, and it's much harder to defend oneself with an empty pistol than a loaded one, whether you are inside or outside of a motor vehicle.

Grampy.... I have used a Harris Bi pod for many years, but it is a 9-13" model and I have always used it prone or off something like a big rock or hay bale..It is dead steady and I have shot quite a few animals at ranges of 200 to 400 yards with it. I have never used one of the longer models designed for sitting or standing, but if they operate similar to my small model, I would GUESS that they might not be as easy to maneuver for shots at different points of the compass as your Primos Trigger stick.
