IMHO dial calipers are the way to go... Plenty accurate enough for reloading purposes...Cheaper...Last forever..Don't have to buy batteries...

At last we have a taker ! I have never had such a tough time giving something away before ! I'll get it in the mail promptly, Uncle Nicky..<<grin>>

The strikers (lids) and lips of box turkey calls require frequent chalking to make the desired sounds. Many hunters favor blue carpenter's chalk, but generally any chalk will work as long as it is not greased or coated chalk, as some blackboard chalk is. The coated stuff causes your striker and call lips to glaze over and ruins the sound of the call. Generally, if your box call gets wet, it sounds like crap until it dries out. The rain chalk supposedly works on your call even when wet. I've never tried it, so I can't tell you from experience how well it works. Bill mentioned in one of his posts that he planned to buy some, and since I have some and probably won't use it I was going to give it to him. But he won't talk to me. Maybe he thinks I have cooties or something.<<grin>>...

I have never attempted to make a long range tool of my ML...It is an old TC Hawken with a peep sight. I sight in about 2 inches high at 50 yards and that puts me on at around 100, but it drops like a rock after that. The longest distance I have ever taken a game animal with it is perhaps 75 yards. Back in 2004, I drew a ML elk tag in a good unit in Colorado. I shot the rifle a lot and was confident out to 125 yards with a 460 grain conical bullet..If fact, with a little Kentucky windage, I was perforating a 20 pound propane bottle at 175 yards, from a steady rest. I ended up shooting a 6x6 bull elk at 20 yards....<<GRIN>>...

Yeah, The Mermaid is in the living room watching TV in her "bunny rabbit" bathrobe... I could go in and try to "land" her, but I suspect that she will tell me to go fly a kite , as usual...

Yeah, Wooly, I'm aware of that, However I used the PM system here on the forum where his PROPERLY SPELLED name popped up and I clicked on it... As I suggested before, I have made too much of it already...My apologies to Bill for that... If anyone wants a cheap piece of rain chalk for their box call, PM me your snail mail addy and I will send it to you free, postage paid by me.. First come first served. I'm tired of waiting for Bill..He's had since Feb. 4th....

I am not sure WHY....All I was trying to do was give him some rain chalk ( at my expense)... Perhaps he has interpreted my some what " different" sense of humor as critical of his posts. Maybe he's just been busy with other stuff in life.. No biggy deal to me either way...

I get the impression that Bill is ignoring me.... Is it just ME, or do some of y'all get the same impression ? Oh well, I've been ignored before...Reminds me of the last 40 years or so of my LOVE LIFE...

I Think I "Want" a Bigger Hammer!
Pygmy replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Wildcat...Is it the 1909 Argentine that also has a hinged floorplate ? Are there other Mausers available with that feature ? I wasn't aware that the Portugese did, but I'm certainly no authority on Mausers. There was a fellow, now deceased, who had a shop in Campbell and had racks full of surplus rifles..He had a personal collection of Mausers that would knock your dick stiff. He told me that at one time he had ambitions of collecting EVERY military Mauser, but had to give it up, because there were just too many. He had dozens and dozens of them on his wall in the house, and many of them were pristine. I have often wondered what happened to them after he died. -
I Think I "Want" a Bigger Hammer!

Nice piece of walnut, Wildcat....I'm already "mildly aroused"... I can't wait to see the finished product...8MM Rem Mag , EAT YOUR HEART OUT ....<<grin>>... -
I had been reloading shotshells for a number of years, but that's quite a different process. Since my area had been shotgun country FOREVER for deer hunting, there were not a lot of local guys who reloaded metallic cartridges, so I was on my own. I bought a couple of loading manuals and read everything I could find about the subject. Some of the more sophisticated technical type reloaders would probably consider my setup somewhat crude..I still use an old beam balance scale from Herter's and my powder dribbler is a little plastic teaspoon that I have used for years, but I have managed to assemble safe and accurate loads for my rifles and have got a lot of pleasure and satisfaction from doing it. Several of my rifles have never had a factory load fired in them.

I don't think Bill likes me... BILL ! Are you IN here, Good Buddy ?

I shot a big Alaska bull moose broadside ( running) with my .280 Rem and a 160 grain Nosler partition. The bullet went through the shoulder blade, hit the spine, deflected 90 degrees straight up and blew a tennis ball sized exit hole in the top of the hump. The bull actually somersaulted...Pretty impressive to see a 1200 to 1400 pound animal somersault ! Nowadays I use Barnes X type bullets for nearly all my hunting loads. They outperform even the time tested Nosler Partition. With modern bonded and monometal bullet selections , raking shots are a viable option with standard chamberings, like those mentioned by the OP.

I never used it either, just carried around it in my vest for about ten years.. That's why I want to give it to Bill....He said he wanted some and I thought I'd offer to give it to him. If only I could get his attention... Perhaps he's busy writing a book or something.

I couldn't help myself...He...He.. Just kept talking about those MASCULINE calves of his... Oh CRUMBCAKES..! I think I just broke a NAIL !

I just threw out that rain chalk I have been trying to give you.

....Hehehehe....As long as you get it the house without her seeing it, you're golden.. Most women don't know one gun from another...Of course, a few exceptions are the lovely ladies who post on HERE like Growie and Paula, bless their feminine little hearts !!

I fried up a bunch of smallmouth filets and had 'em with tater salad and some brussel sprouts roasted with onions, peppers and celery. Tomorrow nite I am having rabbit braised in red wine...All I have for red wine is some good stuff , Fox Run Sable , so I'm stopping by the liquor store tomorrow to pick up a bottle of cheap Dago Red to cook the rabbit in..

You must be older than DIRT...Doc was around when Moby Dick was a minnow. If you look up the word OLD in the dictionary, they have Doc's PICTURE in there.
