  1. Larry....I extent my heartfelt sympathies for your friend's family and also to you...Losing a friend or a loved one is something you never get used to..
  2. Shooting dangerous critters like brown or grizzly bears or dangerous African game with bows and arrows rates basically in the STUNT category, like shooting turkey gobblers with a .410, except much more hazardous. Before you stick an arrow in one of those monsters with your "play toy" , just realize that the odds are about 50-50 that the guy beside you with a rifle with a bore about the size of your thumb is going to have to finish the job for you. It happened to Fred Bear on numerous occasions. If you want to pick a fight with a Kodiak, go ahead, but use an adequate weapon. Sure, a bow with a sharp broadhead will kill any animal on earth, but the question is, will it kill the beast BEFORE it has time to kill you ? Only if you happen to get lucky...
  3. Jeeze, guys,....If you are hunting New Zealand, 100" bucks ( stags more properly) seem kinda small.. Oh..wait a minute....NZ doesn't necessarily mean NEW ZEALAND...??.. Sorry....Never mind....My mistake....Silly me...
  4. I'll keep my eyes open for some on the shelves locally, Jerry. Meanwhile, have you thought about having one of the local dealers order you a box or two ? I'm thinking maybe Bullseye in Gang Mills, Gunz_N Gear in Addison or the shop on 333 up near Risingville..
  5. One day in early September, 1989, my partner and I had the bad judgement to drop not one, but TWO Alaska bull moose within about 50 yards of each other.. Since we knew we would be several days getting them packed back to the river, my partner hiked backed to the river to get more supplies from our raft and I spent the day butchering and boning both bulls with my 4" Buck 110... The single toughest job was cutting of the antlers/skullplates with a 12" Wyoming saw. I slept VERY good that night when I got back to the tent at our spike camp.
  6. First and foremost, I hope my numbers hit on the $100 a square superbowl board !! Beyond that, I am just hoping for a good game..I don't care who wins, but I hate to see it be a blowout, like yesterday's Carolina/Arizona game..
  7. I'm betting you could get a real nice original sweet 16 for MUCH less than $1700..Ib fact I know a guy who has a minty one and I'll bet if I offered him $1000 for it right now he'd about break his arm grabbing the money.
  8. Yeah I put CORKS in the muzzles to keep the dirt out of them... Reminds me of the old joke, why do cavemen drag their women by the hair ? Cuz if they drag them by the heels, they fill up with dirt...
  9. Two of the exact reasons I LIKE the shotgun, Doe.. I love how a well fitted Engish style buttstock comes up and I HATE fat forends on double guns..
  10. I do a lot of fishing and I eat a lot of fresh fish... When we started dating I was feeding her so much fish I was worried that she might turn into one... I had to check her tail now and then to see if she was growing scales...
  11. I am not a fan of any team...However, that was a hell of good football game... The Mermaid was pissed because I was involved in watching the game so I was late fixing supper..

I'm talking about my good buddy Fungus Face. The grizzlies are prettier than he is, despite the fact that they appear to have a chip on their shoulder whenever you see them. Fungus is actually pretty good natured, but you would not know it to look at him..He's one of those guys who always looks pissed off at the world in his hero pictures.

I don't know if he liked it, but he did more than his share.. One evening in 1996, he killed a BIG Alaska bull moose just before dark one evening. He, I and another fellow worked until 2 AM the next morning by lantern light dismembering the beast and moving the quarters a couple hundred yards from the gutpile to lessen the likelihood that the local grizzlies would find it. We got a few hours sleep and went back the next morning, boned out the meat and moved it another 1/4 mile to a temporary meat pole. We spent the next the next 3 days packing the meat out to a lake where a float plane could get to it. I did most of the knife work, but he sure did more than his share of the bull work packing out the meat and the 55 inch rack...I have a picture of the big ugly bastard carrying out the last load of meat and the antlers.
  14. Fish sandwich 2 for $5 from ARBY's with a large order of fries split between the Mermaid and me...washed down with Labatt's Blue Light... REAL gourmet fare !!

And I forgot to mention, he's UGLY too !! Despite all that, he's without a doubt the best hunting partner I have ever hunted with, and I have been with him in some pretty dicey situations in Alaska, northern Canada and the Rocky Mountains as well as plenty of time here in the hills of western NY and north central PA. In the spirit of this thread, he uses stoutly constructed 180 grain grain bullets in his .300 Win for all of his hunting, including whitetails. I happen to know that because I LOAD his ammo for him.

Whatever works for you, my friend... These two schools of thought have existed for a long time...The "expend all the energy on the target" group verses the "exit hole" group... Just another interesting subject for us to discuss on forums like this..
  17. Just a little wind up here..Not even any flurries.... GRIN..... Biz... I LOVE the hot tub picture..!!..I'll be down as soon as I can gather up Jennifer Lopez and Halle Berry to come with me...

I have no problem with that as long as I don't have to dress/process your deer.. I personally prefer a nice half dollar sized exit hole. The deer seldom travel over 100 yards, leave a good blood trail, and my job of processing my venison is not nearly as messy.
  19. Very sweet, Wildcat ...Mechanical trigger or selective ?
  20. I have not read every post, but I don't recall anybody mentioning the fact that PA already has a year round season for coyotes...In fact the only time that you can't shoot them is before noon during spring gobbler season and during deer rifle season IF you do not have a valid deer tag.You can even shoot them on SUNDAY, Praise The Lord ! Ain't too many critters you can legally shoot on Sunday in PA. Soooooo, do you really think a $25 bounty is REALLY going to get more people shooting coyotes ? I think it's going to waste taxpayers money paying for coyotes that would be shot REGARDLESS of the bounty...
  21. A lefty ?...Sorry, Doe.....Never realized you were handicapped... Do you and Lawdwaz belong to the same support group ?
  22. Geeze, Growie, I don't think Brownings have been made in Belgium since the 1960s... Of course, a sweet young thing like you might not remember that...<< SMILE >>....
  23. I love the old humpbacks. I never shot one that I did not shoot well with. The only one I have currently is a 1950s vintage Light Twenty. Great little shotgun, but at modified, it's choked a little tight for upland shooting. Older fixed choked Brownings tend to shoot tighter than marked, so it's closer to an improved modified.OK for pheasants, but tighter than I like for grouse, woodcock and bunny rabbits. The new sweet 16 looks like a sweetheart, but I would much prefer a 26" tube to a 28".. Two inches doesn't sound like much, but it makes for a much better swinging upland gun, IMHO..
