    My old buddy Mort, who has shared many a hunting and fishing adventure with me over the last 30 years or so, is going to be sitting with me opening day in my heated tower blind. We will talk,, tell stories ( most of which have been told before) and possibly a deer will venture out in the food plot , which may screw everything up, because if it is a shooter we may have to shoot it and then get out of the warm tower to dress it out and load it in the truck, which might interrupt an other wise perfect day..

    I have not missed first light on OD since I started hunting deer in 1965...That's about 56 years....One morning many years ago temps were down in the single digits...My oil furnace had quit working overnight...I was in the woods at opening time but I had to go home at 8:00 AM to work on my furnace so my pipes didn't freeze...BUT...I was in the woods hunting the first hour, so I have never missed an opener...Knock on wood...Hehehehe...     Way cool, Al.... I am still using my beam balance scale that I bought from Herter's in the mid 1970's... I do have a Lyman beam balance to check it with.... Of course the lightest charges I measure are 40 grain plus, and I seldom load more than 40 rounds ( more often 20) at a sitting... Enjoy your new toy, you Old Fart....<<<GRIN>>>...........

    Not a big proponent of the "energy dump" theory...I'll take a silver dollar sized exit hole every time....That bullet will have done plenty of damage on it's way through and will leave a good hole leak if tracking is necessary..

    I'm glad you collected your buck.....There are lots of .25 to .30 caliber that will work...Most of my deer have been taken with 7mms, namely 7 x57, 7mm08 and .280 Rem...However, I feel that the bullet is perhaps more important than the exact chambering .. I am a big proponent of using a bonded or monometal bullet that leaves an exit hole EVERY TIME... My favorites are Barnes x-types, but there are others out there....YMMV.....

    A friend of mine is looking for .30 Rem ammo to feed his heirloom Remington M14 pump gun... He is aware that it is a fairly scarce commodity and is willing to pay going price for a box or two... I would appreciate any info.....

    I love dogs.....However over my 70 some years I have been attacked a few times....There is no way I would allow it to happen again as long as I was on property that I owned or had permission and had the means to defend myself in my hands...

    Not to worry ,Mike... I planted mine late last year and it turned out fine..I usually try to get it in around the third week of October....Last year it was Nov 7....

    Hehehehe...I had a rifle once that shot patterns rather than groups...It was an early tang safety Ruger M77 in 7x 57.....I sold it to a friend after telling him that it shot 4-5" groups at 100 yards...He didn't care because all he had ever used for deer were smoothbore shotguns with slugs and it sounded like pretty good accuracy to him...He shot a big 10 point with it the first season he used it...
