I don't think calling is important at all, at least not in the small waters ( rivers and local ponds/swamps) where I have done most of my hunting...A lot of times, if you watch the birds and learned the areas they prefer to land, you won't even need decoys... However , it is cool to see the birds work into the decoys, and provides some good shot opportunities when they lower the landing gear and start to pitch in...In most places, 6-8 decoys in the right place will do the trick... Don't worry about the call...Carry it and tryit if you like, but don't expect any dramatic success with it..

I'm a fan of those later varieties too...

My compass skills are adequate, although a couple of my hunting partners were much better... The guy who was the best , my old buddy " Mukluk" developed his skills from his Army Ranger training... He was the " go to" man on a couple of my remote unguided Alaska hunts when we were dropped a couple of hundred miles from the nearest road..

Yeah, I remember growing up on the farm where we grew our own... Mom would get the water heating and THEN we would go out and pick and husk the corn...From picking to pot was a matter of minutes.. Back then I could put away 8 or 10 ears to a sitting....Best I can do now is about six, but only if it's GOOD......

I have had several friends tell me they got some excellent sweet corn.... However I have got it from five different sources so far, and it all SUCKED big time...3 times it has been totally tasteless, and the other 2 times it would rate perhaps 2 or 3 on a scale of ten... I must admit that I consider myself somewhat of a CORNESSEUR and may be a bit harder to please than Joe Lunchbox, but I am getting frustrated.... The crows that frequent my backyard seem to be happy, though..I guess they are not as fussy as I am...<<sigh>>...

Don't do it, Larry....The absolute worst pizza I ever had was in Juneau...It was The Mermaid's idea...It was grotesque... They don't know how to do barbeque up there either... Probably the best place in the world to get boiled owl, however....

Over many years of raising poultry, I never had any problems I could attribute to possums... I do know they are opportunists and capable of taking poultry, but I had most of my problems with coons and some with foxes and birds of prey....

Not in bed....Asleep in my chair as usual....Hehehe....

It's spotty down here too.....In Campbell they had 2+ inches early this afternoon.... Just 10 miles south in Dogpatch, we had less than 1/2"........................

This post reminds me of one of the several guns I regret NOT buying...It was a 1940s vintage Marlin ( not sure of the model #) with a 24" barrel and a half magazine...It had a buckhorn rear and was not d/t for either scope nor reciever sights...The guy wanted $100 for it...I turned it down because although it was a neat old rifle, I figured I'd never use it...That as over 30 years ago...
