Teach us old wise ones, how do you "old tops" prep for the season.
Pygmy replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Here is my season prep.. 1.... Put new batteries in hearing aid. 2... Put camo tape on walker... 3....Make sure there is ample toilet paper in my pocket. 4....Look for license and tags that I put somewhere where I would surely remember it. 5....Go to town clerks and pay $15 for replacement license and tags. 6....Go into closet to get my rifle. 7... Having forgotten why I went into closet, go to fridge for a beer. 8... Take nap. Next day...repeat..- 19 replies

You betchum, Red Ryder.... I've used mine mostly for spring gobbler hunting and they did a great job of keeping the bugs away, even in Maine in early June, when they are terrible.

" Early likes to make posts to kick the hornets nest once in awhile ".... ..................Ya THINK ??........ LOL..

Very true, Biz...Whatever floats your boat.. Don't take it personal...I don't know what we'd do without you.. I LOVE YOU, MAN !!! We should get together and visit sometime...Could I come down and mow your lawn or sonething ?
-
LOL... Yeah, Dan..I'll admit that the WB's DO fill a niche ... However , they should be considered a SPECIALTY chambering.. Recommending one for a first or only rifle just AIN'T RIGHT...Hehehehehe... I know you're a handloader, but can you imagine buying factory loads for one of those things ?

The .270 Weatherby Magnum is the answer to THIS question... " What is a good example of an outrageously expensive overbore belted magnum which is generally only available in a pimped-up ,overpriced status symbol snob appeal rifle ? " The answer to this question is ANY Weatherby Magnum. << GRIN>>...

What Culver said... All other things equal, with similar bullet weights, performance and recoil are so close that you or the deer would never know the difference. Should you someday want to hunt game bigger than deer, there is an advantage to the 30-06 because it will handle heavier bullets.

Probably a rifled tube would give the best accuracy. If you have modified and IC tubes they would be worth a try also. It's generally best to avoid using full choke or Xtra full tubes with slugs.

Early goes trolling once again, and once again he's not disappointed, as many of us rise to the bait.... He's not REALLY a self important elitist d---head...He's a Psych major and he just gets off getting REACTIONS out of people..

Since I suspect that you are somewhat younger than Fasteddie and myself... Provide proof of having successfully completed a hunter safety course, AND an archery safety course if you plan to bowhunt... Pony up the fees for whatever you desire to hunt.... Stick license and tags in your pocket and silly backtag on your back and go hunting.

I hear ya, Growie... I'm serious about the pistol permit, though...It's a lot easier strapping a handgun on your hip than carrying a long gun or having to resort to a stick to defend yourself. I carry a firearm nearly all the time when I'm outdoors, and I've never had much of anything attack me, except when I was asking for it...Like wading in to help the coonhounds in hand to hand combat with a big coon, or crawling on my belly under a wrecked car with a bayonet to kill a porcupine, or picking up a live horned owl... hehehehe..It's a wonder I survived my missspent youth. I got lots of tetanus shots when I was young, dumb and bulletproof... I'm no longer young or bulletproof..Just dumb...<<grin>>...
-
Geeze, Growie... I do hope you have a pistol permit.. Anybody that gets attacked/threatened by as many critters as you do should be packing 24/7... Perhaps you should change your cologne or something.. Have you been wearing " I'm vulnerable, ATTACK ME" or something similar..??..

Any coyotes I ever came in contact with were gone as soon as they knew I was there.
-
I think coyotes eat darn near anything. In the area where I hunt hogs in Georgia, many of the coyote droppings I have seen have persimmon seeds in them.. I remember an old Roadrunner cartoon in which they listed the Latin name of the coyote as " Eatabus Anythingus"...

Happy Birthday, Deerslayer Joe..!! I have another STACK of magazines to drop off to you next time I get up your way..

Foxes, like coons, are omnivivorous.. On Route 119 just west of Addison, there is a tree right in someone's lawn that bears fruit that looks like crabapples. I've driven past several times and seen a grey fox under the tree eating the fruit off the ground.

I know nothing about thier vocalizations..Google, perhaps ? BTW..Very cool picture.

Yes, indeed, Larry, that is Rocket J. Squirrel, better known as " Rocky the Flying Squirrel"... They are really quite common, but seldom seen because of thier nocturnal nature.. Now, keep your eyes peeled for Bullwinkle... " Fan mail from some FLOUNDER ??".... And how about Boris and Natasha ?.. " We must GET Moose and SQUIRREL !! "
-
Good job, Hunter ...Bon Apetit !! I may get a little fresh moose meat myself. My buddy Fungus Face returned from NB yesterday afternoon with a 4 point bull about the same size as yours.. I'm helping to cut and wrap it tomorrow evening, so maybe he'll give me a piece or two...<big SMILE>..

Culver...I was not aware that they made the leverevolution bullets for the .32 WSP.. However, I don't tend to pay a lot of attention to factory loads for lever actions, or ANY loads for leveractions, for that matter.. That bullet would certainly extend the range of the .32 WSP....
-
What NYBuck50 said... The selection of factory loads is very limited and I suspect all you will find are the 170 grain. The good news is that the 170grain bullet will work fine for deer, with proper shot placement, of course..Ballistics are VERY similar to the 30-30. Congrats on having a fine old rifle...It will serve you well. A friend of mine ( now deceased) had one in a Winchester M94 RIFLE ( not the carbine). It had either a 24 or 26" barrel and half magazine. I would love to have had it. I have no idea what happened to his rifle after he died.
-
Congrats on your bull ! Looking forward to the photos...He'll be GOOD eating !! My hunting buddy, Fungus Face, hunted the New Brunswick season Sept. 26-28.. I'm waiting to hear from him to see how he made out.
