  1. Haha. I was wondering if anyone was going to flame me for that without catching the "a few years ago" part. Good catch! But ya that pic is like 3-4 falls ago I believe. That area has a very healthy flock and was able to sustain a thinning of hens. We actually started shooting more hens during the fall to increase spring time fun. For years the flock kept growing and the toms just wanted nothing to do with us in the spring as they had so many hens already to choose from. There has been times we would sit on the porch at camp and count over 100 birds in a single group as they walked through our backyard/field. Otsego county has some great turkey hunting!
  2. Only pic I have on my phone with my Benelli super nova. Pic was from a few years ago. Took down 2 hens during the fall at camp. They sure were good eaten! Love my Benelli super nova though. That gun had been used and abused for about 8 years now. From being submerged and lost in a pond for a weekend and all the dropping and slamming around it has received on turkey and waterfowl hunts, it still shoots true and never complains. O and the recoil absorbing stock on the benellis is worth every penny to shoot 3 1/2in mags all day on waterfowl! The pattern master choke is also a awesome add on. I can drop birds from crazy long distances with that thing! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. I've used decoys for over a decade now. Many different brands and styles. I'm a firm believer in them when hunting easterns. Rios and other sub species don't seem to require decoys as much to have a high success rate. But dang these easterns are tough most days without a nice set of decoys to bring them close. That being said....my advice is buy the most expensive ones you can afford because they will last many years to come. I finally gave up on the cheap ones as they just won't hold up to more than a season or two. I'm a big fan of the Avian X decoys. A little pricey but you can find them on sale a lot for a good deal. They look great and are durable. I use the jake and breeder hen. Set them about 3-4 ft apart from each other about 15-20 yards in front of me. Adding a feeder hen also helps. And the most important tip that no one has mentioned....don't shoot the decoy!! Lol. When I guided out west I had to remind guys every time we went out. I lost two avian X decoys to guys getting anxious and firing when the tom was almost on top of my decoy. Ended up with decoys full of pellet holes. Not a happy guide! 4. He has brow tines. Hard to see in that pic but they are there. Video shows him turning his head in all directions so I got a good look. The pic I posted is also a pic I took with my phone of my tablet I plug my memory card in
  5. It's always hard to pass. I put in a ton of scouting time and time in the stand this year on the state land but still nothing big enough for me to take. I let a lot of young good bucks go. Which I am sure got blasted away opening day of gun season.
  6. Thanks all. As long as he can survive Mother Nature and the rest of gun season I think I'm going to let him be for this year. I'm going to keep a close eye out for him and see if he gets much bigger next year
  7. Well I bought a new house last week and I have seen deer all over the place. Mostly does and a few small bucks. Seems like a resident group of about 5-6 does live with a small range around my house. I put a camera about 30 feet into the woods behind the house on a well used trail. Have a ton of video of does and a spike and a small 7 point and now this decent young 8 point. He's the biggest I've had on camera all year. I've been hunting state land all year and unfortunately haven't found anything big enough to shoot. This 8 I have behind the house would be tempting but I would like to see what he would look like if he can make it till next year.
  8. I'd say the Fanatic series for gun season. I don't have the bibs (yet) but the jacket is plenty warm down to 0. I would imagine the bibs are just as warm. Just remember that Sitka and other companies like them design their clothes to be layered. They don't really have a one set fits all conditions. The good part about that is it will keep you the most comfy but your wallet is gonna take a beating buying it all. Which is why most guys like me buy bits and pieces when our wives aren't looking lol
  9. If you can stomach the price it's worth it. Best clothing I've ever had. Going on almost 6 years with some of my Sitka stuff and it's holding up great. The fanatic series is great whitetail gear. I'm wearing my fanatic jacket right now actually lol
  10. Nice cold morning today. Was nice and quiet until another guy showed up to hunt and parked down the road a bit in a parking area. He slammed every door, tailgate and piece of equipment he had in the bed around. Made one hell of a ruckus. All of this at about first light. About 15 mins after the guy got done making all that noise a small buck, maybe a 4 pointer came running from my left to my right about 35 yards out. I bleated at him and he stopped for a second behind some thick stuff then continued bounding away. That's all I saw before getting out
  11. Skipped this mornings hunt. I was out of bed and dressed and was about to walk out to the garage when my wife asked me to lay back down with her to warm her up for a min. I ended up undressing and going back to sleep lol. I've had a long week at work so I'm pretty worn out. She said I needed the sleep so just go hunt in the afternoon. She was right. I slept in till 8 and I feel so much better. Plus the extra incentive she gave me for stay in bed was worth it too ;p haha. I'm sure it was a great morning to be out but sometimes you just need that one morning to sleep in. I'm headed out now though. Moved my stand yesterday in the pouring rain. Hopefully I see some good action in this new spot! Good luck to everyone this afternoon
  12. I also cut cable a few years back and switched to satellite. Dish network for us. Way cheaper than cable and better channels.
  13. Acorns are dropping like crazy. And all the squirrels sound like a herd of buffalo
  14. Lots of movement this morning. Stayed in till about 1030. Passed on a 6,3 and 4 pointers. Does all around all morning. They were bedded in the field about 100 yard ahead of me for awhile before getting up and walking away. A little too windy though. Cold wind too. Will be back at it again tomorrow morning!
  15. Like others have said before the level of risk is purely dependent on each shooter and their abilities. And yes I don't argue they were shooting a foam target. But their target wasn't purely my point in posting the article. The numbers of kinetic energy and momentum prove what most have questioned...is there enough force at 100 yards to put down a deer. That article clearly proves that YES there is. Their setup is a totally normal hunting setup. From their arrow weight to draw weight. Their draw weigh was actually a tad low of 70 pounds. They even said there was little to no wind. (Which is also the scenario I've stated is the only way I'd take the shot and agree is the only ethical way). Why do you need an average? What does an average prove? The setup they used wasn't a crazy 80-100 pound draw weight setup. It was a normal hunting bow at 67 something pounds if I remember correctly. I think anyone can agree that's probably close to a average draw weight. Bow isn't even maxed out. I think you missed my point and the articles point. Proved its clearly capable and clearly requires a lot of skill and practice. And that it's totally lethal in the correct weather situations. What more could you ask for without nit picking about a few grams of arrow weight and a couple pounds of draw weight.
  16. I agree everyone's questions, concerns and even doubts are well founded and absolutely credible. Like I've said before I wasn't a real believer in it either until moving west and spending years hanging around guys who've been doing it their whole lives and considered it normal. All I've ever said is that it's more than possible and requires nothing more than good equipment and lots and lots of practice and confidence in yourself. Weather and animal acts are also a huge impact and need to be addressed on a case by case basis each and every time. There are no 2 alike scenarios when it comes to hunting. No one will ever be standing in the same spot, feeling the same way health wise, be sitting or standing in the exact way nor will the weather be exactly the same. Animals won't be standing in the same spot either. It all comes down to making the decision for that very moment in time. I did a quick google search and came across this article from field and stream. I'd think we can all agree on them being a fairly reputable source for info. I agree with pretty much everything said in the article. Like the author says it's absolutely possible but not recommended for everyone BUT attempting to practice at such ranges will absolutely make you a better shooter. The article also includes info on the kinetic energy at 100 yards. And if you read it you will see that it's over 60 pounds of kinetic energy with over .5 momentum. More than enough to kill a animal. Take a read I think you'll find the info and hard stats to be interesting. http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/tagged-out/the-science-behind-the-100-yard-bow-shot
  17. All I need to do is not forget anything lol. And try to get some sleep. Don't get off work until 11 tonight so it's going to be limited sleep as is.
  18. I can see the idea behind that. But we aren't always fighting people who give a damn about their wounded. Not all care for each other like our boys do.
  19. Lol you aren't the sharpest tool in the shed are ya? Listen up boys. The military no longer shoots to kill. If you seriously think anywhere someone is shot that they are automatically dead you really need some more education. If this was true there wouldn't be a single gun shot survivor in the world! Regardless of what you think you may know...our troops don't shoot to wound. They wouldn't waste the lead.
  20. Well your figuring sucks and your dead wrong. Typical nay sayer. Just cause you can't no one can right? so practice means nothing? Tell that to every professional athlete. They wasted their lives training and practicing to be the best of the best because it means nothing right? Army snipers shouldn't ever take 1500 yard shots because 7 out of 10 times they'll miss and all the years spent training was a total waste of tax payer dollars right? Sorry but your plain ignorant. You'd think centuries of human existence would have proven practice to be a waste of time if you think it is such.
  21. You have a valid point on this. But at the same time don't you practice from a stand and in different weather situations? I do. My buddies backyard is the ultimate setup range. We have 5 different stands set at all different ranges and heights to practice from. We shoot all year long with the exception of the nastiest cold weeks in the dead of winter. I raced motocross for over 12 years at a highly competitive rate and never just practiced on sunny days. Same goes for shooting my bows. If it's raining that doesn't mean I stay inside and crack a beer. I was just out this morning in the pouring rain taking a couple shots at 40-50 yards quick before heading out to run some errands. If your serious about doing something then you sure better be serious about your training/practice.
  22. This is completely true. But it's been a long time in the making. I still remember back in the 90s getting pulled from my 1st grade class because the teacher was so upset with my stories I told the class about hunting with my dad. The teacher called my parents in and told them she thought it was a terrible thing to teach a child to kill animals. My dad completely lost it in that meeting and demanded I be removed from her class. The principal was a avid hunter and agreed that she had no business telling me or the class it was wrong and happily removed me from her class and actually made her take a 2 week "vacation".
  23. I wouldn't think so with the ban they put on fracking. But I agree the price seems a bit steep for only 8 acres. I guess it would depend on if there's a big enough septic system put in for a house and a well. Those two alone can run you almost 30K depending on system design.
