  1. Before I get into my ranges let me say this...a ethical shot can only be judged by the shooter. No one has the same skill set as each other. That's just human nature...we are all different and we all practice and train ourselves differently. Kinda like a Army sniper vs me with my half ass sighted in 30.06. We both are essentially doing the same thing (well our targets may be different lol) but our skills and training are MUCH different. With that being said I will shoot an animal out to 100 yards with conditions being as perfect for me as they can get. Little to no wind, no obstructions in the way, animal is feeding or laying down with very little motion one way or another. Some will say this is crazy but it's really not. It doesn't take half as long as you think for an arrow to travel that far. Being from NY and growing up here I never used to shoot past 50 yards until I ventured out west to get into guiding for a living. That's when long ranges really became part of my shooting and training. If anyone thinks they are gonna go out west on a hunt of a lifetime and only shoot to 20-30 yards they are going to be very disappointed when they realize getting that close to a western game animal is very difficult and sometimes just not possible depending on 100 different reasons. When I got the opportunity to go hunt for antelope the first thing I was told was to become deadly accurate to at least 80 yards and that being accurate to 100 was much better. This was my first experience hunting out west and I thought they were crazy but after months of practicing on a daily basis to 100 I was amazed at the confidence I had as an archer. Honestly I kinda gave up gun hunting after this. Yes it's hard but it truly is awesome to challenge yourself like that. After spending a few years as a guide I've witnessed many animals taken at close and long range with gun and bow. I've watched guys screw up as many 25 yard shots as I have long ones. To me there really is no unethical shot based on range as long as it falls within your equipments capabilities and weather permitting. It always comes down to the shooter being capable of making the shot. I highly encourage everyone to break from their comfort zone and practice at long range with a bow. Even if you don't wish to hunt that way. Just practicing will make you a better archer which can only increase your success in the field! Not to mention it's just a lot of fun standing in the back yard betting dollar bills with your buddies on who can make the best shot at 80,90,100.
  2. Will be out in the morning on the 1st. Since I'm hunting state land I will be pulling into the parking area WAY earlier than I should be just to make sure I'm there first. Will start my slow walk to my stand prolly about a hour and a half before first shooting light. 30 min walk and then a nice hour of silence in the stand before I can see
  3. 31 Ata. Should be a great stand bow. Light weight, short and fast. Pretty much everything I wanted for a new hunting bow.
  4. I agree with not caring who shoots what at what ranges. I just don't agree with being told that long range shots are a "no-no". That's just totally false. Anyone who believes this is simply closed minded and that's truly their personal preference. Just don't label those who do as "wrong". No matter your range skill level. Everyone should be practicing so they are confident they can take a animal humanely. Doing anything less than that would be unethical which I'm sure no one here stands for. Either way we can all agree to disagree on some things. All in all I hope everyone on here has a VERY successful season and good times with their friends, families and themselves! Good luck to all! Let's get some BBD pics up soon!
  5. My last bow was a Hoyt Rampage XT set to 70 lbs using Rage 2 blades. My new bow is a Bowtech Carbon knight and I will be trying Slick tricks this year. Haven't shot the slick tricks yet so I'm not sure how they fly at longer range yet so this is still up in the air if I will even be able to use them. My bowtech is also set to 70 pounds. Though I've read that the bowtechs set to 70 usually end up more around 74 pounds.
  6. I like the WB. Used one for a long time. But I could never get them to shoot good past 50/60 yards. Went to drop aways and won't go back. I was a QAD fan for years...well I still am I guess as I think they are great rests but per my bow shops recommendation I'm trying out the Trophy Ridge Revolution rest. So far it's great. Full containment, quiet and shoots great. You can get them for $50-70 depending where you buy from. Pretty dang good price for a high quality drop away.
  7. I agree Grampy that long range shooting with a bow is not for everyone. But at the same time neither is long range shooting with a rifle. I don't feel confident in my gun or skills out past 500 yards. But that doesn't mean I discredit people who take down sheep in the mountains at crazy ranges over a 1000 yards or even our military snipers for blowing heads off terrorists a mile away. I have a buddy who's an Ace with a rifle. Guy will hit quarters at 1100 yards. Break out the bows and this dude couldn't hit a elephant at 40 yards. Archery just isn't his thing.
  8. Thank you. Someone who understands^^.
  9. Have made 3 real long range shots while hunting in 6 years. All 3 kills. Antelope at 88 yards. A doe at 85 yards and another doe at 90 yards. Like I said in my post above...these are rare and uncommon shots but when conditions are perfect I will take the shot. I've wounded more deer at close range than long...but with only taking 3 long range shots total that wouldn't be a fair comparison. If there's a great possibility that I will miss I won't take the shot...same as everyone else who shoots shorter ranges. None of my kills were done in the woods either. All were in wide open fields. Antelope in Wyoming and both does in Kansas wheat fields. Not even sure when the next time will be that I take something that far away. My hunting setup this year is mostly in the timber so I'm limited to about 60 yards...maybe 70 in a couple areas.
  10. Face paint in warmer weather. Thin mask when cold.
  11. Used nothing but rage 2 blades for about 5 years now. But this year I'm gonna switch to Slick Tricks. Just picked up a 4 pack of Magnums today. Will be testing them out tomorrow. Hoping they fly with field point accuracy as they claim. We shall see
  12. What's the matter. Just because you can't hit anything at long ranges means no one can? I always shoot to 100. Makes close range shots a breeze. I shot my antelope at 88 yards. Hard to get close to a lot of western animals so being capable of hitting them at long range is a must. I practiced for months before that hunt and made sure I was rock solid as I don't like wounding anything just like anyone else. I'm young with better than perfect vision (thanks lasik!) and have been practicing to 100 yards for 6 years now. Never said I'd take a high risk hail marry shot at 100 through dense forest. But on a feeding deer in a open field with no wind. Yep I'm letting a arrow fly. With today's new bows why does this seem like a ridiculous feat? Not only does practicing at long ranges make you a better shooter in general it makes the way more common shorter range shots much easier. But the biggest thing is the confidence boost you get
  13. The anticipation is killing me! Just bummed I can't hunt the afternoons until Monday due to work. Hoping for decent morning sits until then though! I too feel like I will be forgetting something. But as long as I have my bow and release I can get the job done. Bow is sighted in to 85 yards for now. That will be good enough for this season. Will tinker with my sights after I swap out the strings over the winter to get me tuned into 100 yards
  14. Online here as well. Got bored at work and decided to bypass my usual nightmare Walmart experience.
  15. Thanks! Ya having a new bow before season definitely ramps up the excitement! So does stumbling upon a hell of a hidden spot last night while checking my cameras. Found the most sign I've seen all summer. Had to move a camera over there just to see what's roaming around. After the next camera check I might have to move my stand over there
  16. Thanks! I can't wait for this season to be here! After all the hours I've spent scouting and preparing I hope I can let a arrow fly into a nice public land buck. After years of being spoiled with private land I'm kind of humbled by the public land only approach. It's become some what of a mission of mine to harvest a mature buck off public land. It's no easy feat in this state but if I can seal the deal it will be that much more rewarding.
  17. I agree the grip is way different than what I've been used to. But in the end it won out of a ton of different ones I shot. I've only had it 3 days and the grip is becoming much more comfy now. Just takes a little time to get used to I guess.
  18. Well I decided to make the switch from Hoyt to Bowtech. Been a Hoyt shooter for 10 years now...decided to try something else out. Got me a Bowtech Carbon Knight. Man what a sweet bow it is so far! Crazy light and absolutely dead in my hand after the shot. Amazing speed as well! If anyone out there is considering a carbon knight I highly recommend it! I put on a Throphy Ridge Revolution drop away rest and a HHA single pin sight. The HHA sights are awesome. Sight in your 20 and 40 yard and you can use a pre made yardage tape they supply you that has all your yardage markers set out to 80 yards. And it's dead accurate too!! Anyone else have a carbon knight or have any experience with them? I'm hoping this bow will last me a couple years First pic doesn't have my drop away or HHA on yet. I bought it with the R.A.K. package but I didn't care for the hostage rest or the multi pin sight so they were taken off after my first 30 shots. Second pic is my grouping at 50 yards the first time testing the yardage tape that HHA supply's you after you calibrate by using their site in method. These were shot with less than 50 shots total on the bow. Still have plenty of time to spend dialing in my form with the new bow but I was impressed at the grouping so early on. Never could group and bow this well at 50 yards on my first try at that range with a new bow.
  19. Come sit in a lawn chair next to my shed and chicken coop. I shoot 2-5 every day!! I'm not really trying to hunt them either. I come outside to go to work and I have 4-5 of them trying to eat my chickens feed from their feeder or the corn I toss out for the chickens in their enclosed run. I use a Gamo air rifle and take at least 2 a day. There is just a ton of them around me this year.
  20. I ordered my tags online. Real easy to do. Came in the mail like 5 days later. I got tired of going to Walmart for the same problems you had. Last year I waited over a hour for my license after getting to my 3rd Walmart so almost half my day blown getting a license. Took 15 mins online to set up my account and buy the tags. Give it a try
  21. Sure was. This is the third encounter I've had with bears up in partridge. The first two times they were in some real tall grass and I spooked them. This is the first time I've had one on camera though. I first thought someone stole my camera when I walked up to where I set it. A little looking around and I found the camera on the ground and the strap about 15 yards away. I was pleased to see no one stole my camera though lol. I'm hoping no one will bother my cams or stands on the state land. Now that the camera is hung back up it will be cool to see if I can get better pics of this bear. Even better if I can put a tag on it!
  22. Had a bear take my camera off the tree. I knew there was a bear in the area just didn't expect it to rip my camera down lol. Only a few teeth marks in the case but still works fine! Put the camera back up so hopefully I can get some better pics. The pics I have now aren't the greatest but you can tell it's the fur of a bear. Anyone else have any bears take their cameras down?
  23. Not a huge difference in mileage there. Not to mention my 2011 Ecoboost would run 21-23 mpg on flat highways. But the ecoboosts are known to have a wife variance in MPGs, but at the same time they have some kick ass power that will out pull and out perform the Ram and Chevy any day of the week. I'm a big fan of dodge and ford so I'm not bashing the ram as they are awesome trucks but engine to engine no one compares to the ecoboosts capabilities. If I were to buy a brand new truck again I think it would still be a Ford. Interiors are comfy and hold up to a lot of abuse. Dodge is a close runner up. Drive both and see which one you like best!
  24. I feel your pain. I have a third kid on the way and even though the crew cab on my 2011 F150 was huge it isn't enough for 3 kids and a double stroller. Traded it in for a expedition. Nice vehicle but damn does it suck down the gas. Good thing the wife doesn't drive to much! I had a beater car that I was using to go to work with and run errands since it was easier on the wallet to drive that piece of crap around. But it does take a big hit on your masculinity. I just traded that car in last week for a 2010 VW Jetta TDI. Love the little diesel motor. Mpgs are up in the 50 and 60 mpg range. I can drive around and not fill up for weeks now it's great. May not be as cool as my 2010 dodge cummins was with 15 grand in the motor and would snap your neck when stomping on the throttle but you gotta do what you gotta do when you have kids. I do highly suggest a nice used TDI to anyone looking for good mpgs and a nice vehicle to drive. Keep your head up OP it will get better. 8 months ago I lost my job due to a DWI (was driving trucks before, but DWI was recently dropped in court! Woohoo!) and was on the verge of losing my house and everything else. Now I have a job making close to 100K a year doing wayyyyyyy less work than ever before. And if I hadn't gotten the dwi I prolly would still be driving trucks working my ass off 70 hours a week just trying to get by. Funny how life works man if really is. I have been very thankful for the way everything has worked out the last 8 months but man there was some low points that can really bring a guy to his knees. Keep your head up OP good things come to those who work hard and deserve them, I firmly believe that to be the truth
