The .223 or .22-250 will kill deer too, should we start recommending them also? I don't think many knowledgable hunters will recommend them knowing the many variables one is confronted with in the field. In my opinion the .243 is where deer calibers start, and I prefer NOT to pick the smallest adequate caliber for my deer hunting. I want something bigger and a little more potent. You don't need magnums but there are plenty of other calibers out there to choose from that will give you MORE than the .243 will. .243 are also often recommended for the young or novice hunter. I think it's one of the worst you could give to a beginner. It's more of a caliber for the experienced shooter. Giving it to a beginner who might not make a perfect shot is asking a little too much of the shooter and the caliber. Just because the gun has lighter recoil, doesn't mean that a novice hunter won't get unglued at the moment of truth. Again, having something more potent at such a moment will give you a little added security in my opinion.

I wonder about that? Yeah, it's killed a lot of deer, but the deer take in the earlier part of the 1900's wasn't nearly what it has been in the last 20-30 years. There weren't nearly as many deer running around back then as there are today. In the last 50 years, you see way more people carrying calibers like the .30-06, .270, .308. At least that has been my observation. In these recent years you've had much, much higher deer takes than you did when the .30-.30 ruled the deer woods. So I would say these other calibers at this point might have caught up to the .30-.30 and/or probably surpassed it in total deer killed.

The back part of the bolt on his rifle isn't from a Ruger American or Savage. That looks like a Marlin to me. It also has an accu-type trigger.

Trapper, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here. Your advertisement definitely states that he will also talk about his personal faith story, so people were forewarned. If he somehow advertised a seminar about deer only, and started talking about his faith, then I'd have a problem with it. Just because a non-religous event or talk is being held on church grounds shouldn't mean that one is now subject to a talk about religion or faith. I for one have been to numerous events, where the church rented out it's facilities to speakers or musicians and religion played NO part in any of it.

Oh man, just looked at this thread and it turned out to be so interesting! So he tells everyone it's a seminar about deer and then he starts talking about God?? Like others have said, I have nothing against religion, but why does he feel the need to bring God up at a deer seminar?? Just NOT right. Would we like it if we were invited to some other unrelated event, and then it turned into an anti-gun or anti-hunting monologue?? No freaking way. I'd put him in the same category as those people who feel the need to yell at the top of their lungs on streets, subways and other public places that Jesus is their lord and savior and that everyone needs to follow him to be saved from the devil. These people may love Jesus, but have mental issues as well.

We have read enough of your posts to know where you are coming from. You make some money off hunting right now and you want to make MORE in the future. You argue until you are blue in the face, be it about CWD or anything else to protect this livelihood for yourself. The fact that people may have to cough up good money to hunt makes you completely happy. In your view everyone SHOULD have to, so people like yourself can make money. We know the deal.

Yes, you will be left with NOTHING. Rural people won't have the money to give you for the rights to hunt your land or shoot your penned deer, while the urban and suburban people, who may have some money are getting more and more removed from hunting, and mighty few of them will still be hunting in a few years. I think most people from any region are smart enough to know when they are getting ripped off. So all those $$$$ signs that you are seeing in front of your eyes will disappear. Maybe you'll end up selling those big penned bucks at a garage sale alongside your old toaster. I'll give you $5 for both. LOL

I've got to say that you have a VERY bizarre view of hunting and where you'd like to see it go. I fully know that things are changing, and I can accept change. Although, I surely will not be going the route you want hunting to take. I'll sooner give it up and so will many others. In the end you will be left with NOTHING also.

Maybe in your area you can get all these extra doe tags and dmap's, but there are plenty of areas where you don't. In lots of areas, you are lucky to draw a tag every other year. Those who do draw them will not be giving them away to others either.

I think most are self-propelled these days, unless you get a small, cheap one. I have a Honda and it's on it's 3rd summer. I don't have too much to mow, but so far I am happy with it. Beats the hell out of the Craftsman (not self-propelled) I used to have. At least the Honda always starts on one pull, while I used to dislocate my shoulder trying to start the Craftsman. I've just had more luck with Japanese designed engines, be they cars or anything else. They keep running, with little to NO maintenance required.

I don't need to get out more, you are exactly what I was talking about when I was referring to the trophy mentality that is ruining hunting. It's nothing but a money game to you, and at the same time you are even promoting illegal activity, since you know damned well that you can't kill 10 does if you only have tags for 5. You may own the land, but you DON'T own the game on it. I guess owning some deer in a pen makes you think you own the free ranging ones also? LOL

What are you implying? If they are given 5 tags, how will be able to take 10 on their own land legally? Yeah, I know it's a money world, and hunting won't be a free ride anymore, BUT it has to be within reason. You may get some hunters giving you $10K to shoot your penned deer, but there aren't too many willing to cough up that kind of money just for a chance to hunt a bit. It will all go down in shambles before you have ALL hunters spending small fortunes to shoot a stinking deer once a year, I can assure you of that.

I've always said that the trophy hunting mentality is the worse thing to ever happen to hunting. It has screwed things up in so many ways, that it isn't even funny. Forget about shooting does that need to get shot. Pretty soon it will be impossible to find a place to hunt ANYTHING unless you cough up some big $$. And before people say that there will still be state land available, not everyone will fit on state land. Plus, a lot of state land is such poor habitat compared to private land, that most hunters won't want to waste their time hunting it. You talk about what's wrong with hunting? Trophy hunting is the #1 problem. Like killing that big buck will enhance their manhood or something? Give me a break!

Yeah, those numbers seems high to me, too. Even if there are that many, I'd say less than a million are hardcore gun-rights supporters and that's not enough to oust Cuomo on this one issue. I know plenty of people who own guns, but it's not like they think about guns every minute of the day, and are willing to spend time and money fighting gun laws. Some will call them traitors, but you can't force anyone into anything. Not everyone is hardcore and you can't get pissed at them for not wanting to be. For many people there are more pressing issues to worry about. If gun-rights people were smart (which I honestly see little evidence of), they need to go after Cuomo on other issues and dig up dirt on him. Thinking that he will be ousted on the SAFE act issue alone is quite silly, because it will NEVER happen.

Didn't mean to offend anyone in particular. Other than my sister-in-law, who doesn't hunt, and isn't quite 375lbs, but is still definitely a lard butt. Took her along on vacation with us a couple weeks back, and the only time she gets off her tuff is when it's time to go to the table to eat. She can make it to the food in world record time. Otherwise, she won't move her fat a$$ if you paid her.
