  1. Burt, I am not one of those who think that there is no way that the cougar could again re-establish themselves in the northeast. I am just very suspect of them being so sure that this cougar came all the way from South Dakota. Apparently there have been some confirmed sightings in Quebec over recent years. In fact I visited Mt. Tremblant National park in Quebec a few years back and the park brochure even stated that sightings have occurred. So if they are in Quebec, why should we think they couldn't make it down to NY, VT, MA, CT, ME?? Quebec I would believe, South Dakota I wouldn't. I just happen to still have a download of the park brochure from when I planned my visit there. I am posting the cover and the page where they talk about cougars.
  2. Man, this is so hard to believe! If I walked from NY to South Dakota, I could crap, pee, spit, and deposit some other even nastier stuff along the way every mile, I bet they wouldn't be able to figure out where I was originally from without ID on me if I got run over by a truck!! LOL I just can't believe they have so much evidence on a freakin cat to come to such a conclusion.
  3. I think the key with the cheaper models is not to work them to death, i.e. have the motor running for more than 15-20 minutes at a time without letting it cool down. I think some of those bad reviewers are people who shove bowls full of meat down these machines for hours at a time and then gripe about it dying on them. Even if you grind up several deer a year, you aren't exactly cutting up a rhino, so I think even the inexpensive models should do the trick for most average hunters.
  4. Here's an even funnier version. Look at the first guy shooting. His barrel hits the glass behind him when he falls down and shatters it. Put up the volume, it's funnier than hell!!
  5. I have a cheap Cabelas $99 model, that was on sale for $69 for a couple of years now. Surely not heavy duty quality, but for some of the meat I grind up out of 2-4 deer a year I am really happy with it. Also comes with the sausage stuffer tubes. I don't grind up all the meat from my deer, so this fits the bill for me nicely. Beats the handcranker I used to have anyway.
  6. I thought I had the only one still in existence. LOL I use the noise to my advantage. I take a box full of old arrows into the woods with me and I fling them around. All the grunts, bleats, and sounds like clashing antlers that the bow makes actually helps me bring the deer in. Once they are in range I get the good arrows ready for the kill!! LOL
  7. Those look like some dandy bows for the price! I haven't seen anything in that range in the stores I looked at. Doe, when I'm ready to open my wallet and pull out the presidents (who of course will be wearing sunglasses since they never get to see the outside light), you will be the first guy I go to for good suggestions on what to get.
  8. That is why I will stick to this vintage 1990 beauty!!! LOL It shoots pretty darned good even in my hands, someone who is far from an expert bow shot. P.S. I won't get into the part where I am too cheap to actually buy a new one. LOL
  9. That's why if I didn't have private land to hunt, I probably would not hunt at all. I prefer not to deal with strangers when hunting be they good or bad. Same goes with non-hunters. When hunting I prefer to be hidden away from them. That is the main reason I would never hunt small suburban lots. Sure the hunting can be good, but I prefer not having to knock on someones door asking if I could retrieve a deer from their backyards. Not my cup of tea!
  10. That's the one, Doe. Subsequent reports said that the hunters confronting him used racial remarks when they first walked up to him, and some reports stated that they even fired the first shot into the air. Like I said, we will never know for sure what happened, and it surely doesn't give anyone the right to shoot and kill people, but things can get ugly real fast if one doesn't use their head on the side of caution.
  11. I can't believe some of the prices on bows. The ones I've seen in stores over the last few years were in the $600 and over range. And that of course is with nothing on them. I don't think I even saw anything for $300. They can build a rifle that will shoot 1 inch groups for $500 and less, yet bow manufacturers want way more for a bow? Makes absolutely NO sense to me. I guess if suckers are willing to pay those prices, they will keep bringing the prices up.
  12. There are some looney's out there, so I think it is better to be cautious on what you say to someone and how you say it. Wasn't there an incident in Wisconsin a few years back where someone opened up on and killed a bunch of hunters that confronted him for being on their land? Now we will never know for sure how they confronted him, but knowing how some hunters act, I would bet that they didn't say "excuse me sir, do you realize that you are on someone else's property?". I wouldn't be surprised if it were more like "Hey, get the bleep off my land you bleep!!". Doesn't make it right for someone to shoot in any event, but like I said, there are looney's out there, and it don't take much to trigger rage in some of them.
  13. I hear you, Dave. Next thing they should do is put AR's in place like they have been proposing in all these areas where DMP's are next to impossible to get, and some of the more intelligent folks can tell us again why they think we will continue to buy licenses!
  14. This is funny. Those of you who pass up doe after doe waiting for Mr. Big to come around are guaranteed doe tags, while me and Doewhacker who have no qualms about dropping the first deer we see to fill our freezers will get JACK. End result= NO deer will get shot. LOL. I think the state needs to give doe tags to those who actually WANT to kill deer first. You fellas don't need tags just to look at them.
  15. Just the way we like things to go! What can we expect here? It was doomed to go somewhere south of the border from the get go. The fella starting the thread calls himself Bballhunter so God only knows where we could have taken this? I for one prefer that we went down the beaver route.
  16. Maybe they should put warning labels on them like they do on cigarettes? "Warning- Eating beaver can be hazardous to your health. The Surgeon General has established that those who eat beaver will eventually be eaten alive by them"
  17. And I can assure you that beavers are the only critters that enjoy being eaten.
  18. Have to agree with everything you said here. The .30-06 is the perfect all around big game round, but for whitetails only in this half of the country the .308 might be even better.
  19. Yeah, I wish it was that easy to find a new place in the Catskill region. In western NY they are giving them away like candy. My area has a LOW probability this year which is worse than the last two which was MEDIUM. I think even my preference points from last year may not help me get one. We won't have any does to whack it seems.
  20. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/30409.html Hot off the presses. Looks like they are cutting back in many WMU's.
  21. I'm not much of any kind of bowhunter, but I would agree. I would much prefer a more accurate and effective and easier to shoot bow if I must use one, and that without a doubt is a compound. I do however think that compound bows have grown to where there are just way too many bells and whistles attached to them. Just to many parts, gadgets, gear, junk, etc. for my liking involved with modern day compounds. That is why I will hang on to my fairly simple 1990 compound bow until it falls completely apart or I die. Whichever comes first. LOL yeah me too Steve. It seems over the years Recurves have slowly become more popular. Im not bashing anyone who still uses them or wishes to get into using them BUT i just seems silly to me. Ive watched shows when they use recurves and it makes me lough. One guy was ranting and raving about his recurve, he gets a 15 yard shot on a deer perfectly broadside, gut shot the dang thing and when i say he got NO penetration, that would be an understatement. he lost that deer... i admit tho these new compounds are somewhat futuristic compared to modern day compounds but they are great Steve lol. i have an 2005 Mathews switch back XT ill stick too. Its dead acurate and has great penetration, i also feel very confident with it which is important. you have to feel comfortable with what you shoot no matter what it is... One limits themselves big time with a recurve. I honestly think most people shouldn't shoot past 20 yards even with a compound bow. Give someone a recurve and you practically have to be arms length away from the deer. Some will argue that native Americans killed deer with simple bows, but we will never know for sure how many they only wounded and never recovered. Plus, many tribes used poison on their arrows which eventually would put a deer down even with a poor shot, and that is something modern bowhunters are not allowed to do, so I for one would prefer to use a bow that has a better chance of being effective and more accurate over something that has minimal range.
  22. Now that looks like a simple bow setup!! Not many bells and whistles and I am downright impressed at anyone killing a deer at 20 yards without sights. Not many can say the same. Great job.

  24. Running can be tough on the joints, that's for sure. I think people get the most bang for the buck with running, as far as a good workout in a short amount of time is concerned, that is why many run. But if you are going to wear your joints into the ground where eventually it will become hard to move around at all, I don't know how much one is really benefitting. I think good brisk walks for a decent distance is a better alternative for most along with some cycling or other aerobic gym apparatus.
  25. Doc, you should watch Rocky IV all over again when Rocky trains by dragging a tree trunk up the side of a mountain. [Drago - He's not human. He's like a piece of iron.] Doc has signed to play Rocky in the next movie. He will be portraying Rocky at the age of 73. In the movie Rocky will be making yet another boxing comeback while suffering from Alzheimers. When the bell rings for round one he will start punching the referee because he couldn't remember who his opponent was.
