  1. I love walking and I think more people should do it. Me and my wife and a few in her family try to do 5-10 mile day hikes a few times each summer. For general exercise close to home I ride a bicycle and have for years. I ride 50 to 60 miles a week, mostly very early in the morning to avoid traffic. I have logged 700 miles this spring and summer so far. From what I have seen way too MANY hunters are lard butts.
  2. If you make that house any bigger your property taxes will go up for adding another home to your land! Will there be an elevator to take you up to the grand concourse?
  3. I don't know about that. Most people have a place or two to hunt if they are lucky. I only have one. If I know my chances of drawing a DMP are low in my area I don't apply anywhere else for it wouldn't help me anyway. Yes, maybe I could get to public land in other areas but I don't like hunting public land nor am I about to try to find private land which I know is never an easy proposition. So, I think for many people it's applying in their usual stomping grounds or NOWHERE else. It would be nice if finding hunting spots where DMP are more plentiful was easy, but we all know that isn't the case.
  4. Lamp post might be a bit dangerous. I think the dog urine scent you would eventually get on you would scare off the deer. I think it would be best to set up inside a hot dog cart. Have the street vendor get rid of his hot dogs and hot water and make a little window to peek thru. When you see the deer you can just pop out of the cart and fire.
  5. There are also deer on Staten Island and in the Bronx. When I see one walking down 5th Avenue in Manhattan there will be absolutely NO doubt left in my mind that they are masters of survival.
  6. The man isn't kidding. They don't call him Doewhacker for nothing. The DEC bestowed that title on him for having reported 152 doe kills over the years, while not having killed a single buck. Well, he did shoot an antlered deer once, but damned if it didn't turn out to be a doe with horns! These days he tears the buck tag off as soon as he gets his license and throws it in the trash. A dedicated doe killer he is!
  7. So are you telling us that you don't wear Scentlok garments like T-Bone on the other thread?? Too expensive for me. BTW never said I was against shooting does, just pointed out a scenario where you might want to think twice. That probably went right over your head. ;D We're just playing with you, Burt! We've never known you to take things as seriously as some others here.
  8. LOL! That's a good one! I think this calls for the DEC to set up a special cull season to rid the herd of these tainted deer. I'm in. I don't think the meat will be bad at all and perfectly fine to eat. Sort of like killing a deer that has been partially smoked already! LOL
  9. So are you telling us that you don't wear Scentlok garments like T-Bone on the other thread??
  10. I think we have a better chance of escaping unscathed if he actually does aim at us. No telling where the bullets or arrows might go if he is aiming at something else.
  11. I tell you what I can do Burt, I'll set up down the trail from you and you pass the doe and let me shoot it, you can shoot bucks till your'e blue in the face I'm fine with that. lol I have an even better idea, we can pretend to be a yote and a bear and we can kill all the does Burt decides to pass up without a need for a hunting license, a DMP, Either sex archery/ML tag or anything like that. Of course Burt might take a shot at us if he sees us, but I am confident enough that he will miss us if he does. Doe, you can stick your tongue at him to distract him while I get away with the venison. We'll meet up at the truck! Looks like Burt's trailcam already caught us setting up.
  12. This point is interesting. If they remove the either sex tag from archery/ML, why would anyone think that this would reduce the doe take in any area? I guess it would if they also issued no DMP permits or issued only a few. But if they issue more DMP's for any given unit because of the removal of the either sex tag, then wouldn't you think that these DMP's will most likely be used by gun hunters who have a better chance of actually filling this permit? I think in a scenario like that you would have more antlerless deer taken in the long run. At least currently we can count on archers to NOT fill most of them since their total take of deer is quite low.
  13. Actually this is probably the biggest issue. Hunters want MORE deer, while the DEC want LESS. My hunch is that their preference will always win out and then the DEC will occasionally try to come up with different methods to cut down on the total kill only to make hunters think that they are doing something to bring deer back. This of course will just be a cover-up. They want deer killed, there is no doubt about that, but also desperately want license sales, so they have to make it look like they are doing something for the hunters benefit just to keep them buying. As the song says, "MONEY makes the world go around".
  14. "Hunting is the only proven animal control method and will continue as long as there is habitat and animals enough to control.." Right, and they can call us half-assed hunters or hunters that are expendable, but the "weekend warriors" probably account for the majority of the deer that get killed in NYS. Most are not passing up deer for 10 seasons or more waiting for that wallhanger to come by. They are doing the job that the DEC wants us to do, which is kill deer. End result= these "weekend warriors" are MORE important to the DEC than any other group of hunters.
  15. You are typically the cut and paste master here, why don't you post something proving this? This is all I could find on it, and it sure looks like the NRA once again used it's old worn out line After the speech, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said, "What's it going to solve? The criminals could care less. They're not going to stand in line; they won't comply with it."[/size] http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=411
  16. Nobody is saying that crime would cease if you had the strictest set of gun laws. What is needed is uniformity in laws around the nation. What good are any gun laws if someone can go to a gun show in a neighboring state and buy a trunk load of weapons with NO questions asked. Some have suggested a national gun card where all transactions private or thru dealer can be made by only those possessing this card. Very simple system in todays computer age and I have no doubt that it would tighten up the availability of firearms to the criminal element who currently can LEGALLY get them without any questions asked in many places around this country. Absolutely NO infringement on any law abiding citizens rights with such a system and it would also prove to the rabid anti-gun side that we as law abiding gun owners do have concerns about guns falling into the wrong hands and want to implement safeguards to help keep them away from these people. Of course to the hardheads of the world a suggestion like this is considered treason. Too bad, YOU guys are then the ones who have put the stigma on all of us gun owners by not accepting reality and sticking to your worn out ideas.
  17. I don't buy this. You probably catch your walleye in public waters, while the majority of hunters still prefer to hunt private land for various reasons, which if you didn't notice is getting harder to come by OR costing hunters more and more to have access to. Whether you own it or lease it, it costs WAY more money than catching your walleye in public waters. There lies the difference. People won't be wasting their time and money on hunting if there is very little that is legal for them to shoot. You must have forgotten the cost of the boat, gas, license... but his point had nothing to do with harder or easier.. it was that no matter what.. you don't really have a choice if the DEC says you don't... and he's right.. most guys will continue hunting.. AR's or not... the ones that don't oh well... nobody has yet mentioned that maybe guys will stop hunting if something isn't done about managing the buck age structure cuz they're sick of seeing only young bucks... or maybe some guys wanna quit cuz there are too many hunters in the woods killing the first thing they see... this "everyone is gonna take their ball and go home" is a bunch of nonsense. Lots of fishing can be done without a boat, and one gets most of the excitement involved in fishing by reeling in that fish even if it doesn't measure up and you have to throw it back. The same cannot be said about hunting. You could have a perfect set up and see scores of deer that don't quite measure up from your stand, but guess what? You don't know for sure whether your bullet or arrow would have connected on that deer unless you actually fire your weapon at it. There are only so many deer the majority of hunters will let walk because the law says they have to let them walk, before they take up other activities where they DON'T need to buy a license, pay property taxes, pay for leases, just to LOOK at animals. You can hike without a license and see scores of animals. You can photograph them on public or private land without a license. Why would hunters continue to buy licenses if they knew there was only a slim chances of even seeing a deer that was actually legal to shoot?? Yeah, some would continue to buy licenses, but don't for a minute think the many weekend warrior hunters out there wouldn't be saying "the hell with it, why am I even wasting my time!". Lots of distractions in every day life to make hunting not the most important priority for most people. All it takes is to make the sport a little less appealing, and people will very easily give it up. I for one have way LESS desire to hunt these days than I did 20 years ago. Why? Mainly because there are way MORE important things in life than hunting. Make it where my chances of getting a doe permit are slim and where I can only shoot a buck that meets AR restrictions and I will then prefer to spend my limited free time in the outdoors hiking with my wife and kids instead of sitting in a stand by myself and waiting around for nothing. I could twiddle my thumbs on my living room sofa just the same and probably be more comfortable doing it! LOL That would be because you see it as a limitation to your hunting, I don't look at it that way.. and neither do many other hunters that understand deer management... I will grant you that the DEC doesn't have a firm grip on what deer management is either and aren't necessarily making the right decisions when it comes to managing by DMU... but the concept of managing deer herds is a sound one and is needed in many areas of NY... maybe not yours and mine... but in many. As for your desire to hunt.. that doesn't say anything about how others feel... first of all.. hunting probably shouldn't be anyones top priority but that doesn't mean they don't love it and that they don't do a lot of it... others like you may be more content twiddling your thumbs on the sofa... and that could be a lot of the reason you have the outlook you do about hunting regs. Life is about choices... if you choose not to hunt that is your right.. for whatever reason... my feeling is that losing the weekend warriors or disinterested hunters... will have zero impact on whether or not I am for or against a new hunting regulation... if I think it's good for deer management then it's good to me... if others don't... they can feel free to sit on the sofa and twiddle... maybe that will make more room on the state land for those that do still enjoy hunting. I can guarantee you that there are way MORE weekend warrior type amongst the total hunting populace than there are those like you who think they know everything there is to know about proper deer management. It is quite obvious that you would prefer that the weekend warrior type stay home so that YOU have more land and game available for yourself. That point you have made perfectly clear to everyone here.
  18. According to this, Westchester and Suffolk have the most entries from 1991-2000, which would be no big surprise. http://www.whitetail-outfitters.com/quality-deer-managed-lands.html
  19. Some of these fellas can lecture until they are blue in the face, but they won't change my mind. I also don't like their extremist views. I was a member for at least 10 -15 years. Haven't been a member for the last 15 years now and haven't missed them one tiny bit. They lie and brainwash people just as well as those on the left.
  20. This is a nationwide map of B&C entries, but you can get an idea of what counties in NY have the most entries. http://www.boone-crockett.org/bgrecords/records_whitetail_wallpaper.asp?area=bgrecords

  22. That is pretty darn funny!!! Hunting has got to be the only pastime in the world that can appreciate that type of joking around!
  23. I have run across guys that wouldn't hesitate to call the kid out. One note...they don't have kids whick can leave some in a very selfish state of mind Wow, how sad! Also agree with you on the not having kids part and selfishness. I don't think anyone can ever understand what giving of oneself really means until they become caring parents, and I put an emphasis on CARING, since being a parent and being a caring one are two different things in todays world.
  24. Although I agree with this articles general premise on the over-emphasis on trophy hunting, I do think the writer took some liberties to try to make his point here. I think it would take a monumental jerk to try to tell a 13 year old that his buck didn't measure up NO matter what the properties rules on antler size might be. I just couldn't imagine anyone being so bold and callous to tell a kid that he shouldn't have shot even if he shot the smallest of doe's, thus I think the author probably made it up to make his story sound better. Obviously I will never know for sure, but it wouldn't be the first time lies have been used to try to pursuade the reader.
  25. I think they should use that chubby guy T-Bone, who appears on some of the Realtree Monster Buck DVD's as host of this DVD. It would be funny as heck to see him sweating amongst all those pretty "racks"! Probably would be a good idea to have paramedics on standby while they shoot the DVD! Just might be a little more than the big boy can handle! HAHAHA, Im not going to say anything bad about Travis, Ive met him and hes one of the nicest people youd ever meet. Not saying anything bad about him. He does seem like a jovial kind of fella, that is why he came to mind here. Would just be funny having him waddling around behind the photographers while they take the calendar pictures of those big "racks"! Surely would be more entertaining than seeing him take yet another "management" buck! LOL
