  1. Oh, I've killed a few nice sized bucks. Why did I kill them? Because they happened to walk in front of me before anything else did. I surely didn't go out hunting specifically for one that size. Do they stand out above all the smaller ones or antlerless deer I've killed? Absolutely not. In fact some of my most memorable hunts involved deer that most antler crazed hunters would look down at.
  2. You guys obviously have trouble believing it but I could give a rats butt about ever killing a buck to get my name in any book. That has absolutely no relevance to why I choose to go afield. Like anyone other than someone else who is obsessed with such things will give two $hits about seeing my name or yours in a trophy hunting record book. So go ahead and think of me as being delusional if you want. LOL
  3. You've got one hell of an ego, at least I can give you credit for that.
  4. You appear to have the same affliction as FSW, where you only see antlers in deer hunting. I drive 4 hours to get to my hunting spot and I definitely have limited time to devote to hunting. Any deer that walks by me and I have a tag for will get shot at. I am happy with anything I can bag.. Thoughts of big antlered bucks are the last thing on my mind. If one happens to walk by me first I will shoot at it, just as I would at a spike. Most of us don't get so delusional that big antlers are the #1 reason we go out to hunt.
  5. Now I've read plenty of BS opinions on political issues on this forum from a number of folks. As far as an opinion on a hunting related topic the above wins the prize for being the most ridiculous. No bloody way is that even close to being the truth.
  6. I've been on this forum for a good many years now and I wish I had a dollar for each time I've heard him say that deer hunting is "all about the antlers". I'd probably be able to go on a high fence canned hunt by now with all those dollars. LOL
  7. So what drives these people to spend thousands upon thousands to shoot one of these freak antlered bucks inside enclosures?? Do they do it because they think it will impress others?? Would any of you here on the forum be impressed? Should we be impressed because they have all this money to spend?? And if they have all this money aren't there still plenty of guided and unguided hunts out there for free ranging game? Do they really think they accomplished something by shooting one of these farm raised deer? This all makes very little sense to me. I'd sooner take my hat off to the guy who killed the dinkiest of free ranging deer than I ever would to someone who blew $10K or more on one of these pen raised mongoloid deer.
  8. Why in the world would a farm raised tame buck give you the shakes?? A free ranging spike buck would excite me more than that freak.
  9. The .22-250 is best known as a varmint round so that should tell you something. It can surely kill a deer but there are scores of better cartridges for deer hunting. Would not be a good feeling at all having a deer get away wounded and then you wondering if maybe you should have used a more potent round.
  10. Trust me, we are not the first to tell him what he is and what he can do with himself. If in everyday life he talks and acts like he does on this forum he's surely heard it many, MANY times before. People get sick and tired of listening to know it all's real quick. Especially the ones who only regurgitate one sided political views and anyone who disagrees with any of it is automatically labeled a pinko/left wing/communist. That's Grouse to a T.
  11. I don't think there will be many counties opting out either, but I am not too familiar with snowmobiling or have any clue how popular it might be in any particular county. What I do find interesting is that the DEC let counties opt in or out on the youth hunt for 12 and 13 year olds and now may do the same with the holiday hunt. I think this can potentially open up a whole can of worms if we allow counties to decide game laws and seasons for themselves. I don't think it would be a good thing by any stretch of the imagination and lead to less hunting opportunities especially nearer the bigger cities and populated suburban areas. Letting urban minded folks make decisions on hunting probably won't end well.
  12. Did anyone see this yet? Got an email from the DEC yesterday. Looks like the holiday deer hunt might be a NO go in some counties if this proposal is adopted. Seems like quite a few proposals have been adopted of late so this may be next. Looks like the snowmobilers put in their .02 cents on this issue.
  13. Yes, it surely looks like a great spot. Unfortunately those 15-20 homes have a stadium-like view of that field and whatever might be happening on it. Blaze orange would no doubt make you even more visible but I think the idiots who have damaged your stands have got you pegged already and there is no avoiding them at this point. All that you can hope for is that they somehow get caught and penalized where it gets them to end their stupid stunts.
  14. I know some of you will get pissed at me asking this, but where the hell do some of you hunt? In backyards within sight of 100 homes?? Getting treestands damaged and straps cut is surely not a good thing but unfortunately there are a number of negatives to hunting in suburbia. Guys hunt these areas because the odds of killing big bucks are greater but with some advantages come some disadvantages too. I never hunted areas like this nor do I care to because of the many issues one can get themselves into with people who don't like hunting or don't know a damned thing about it. Neither have I ever run into an anti-hunter in the rural areas I have hunted. Although I have run into some butt-hole hunters over the years. I'm sure if a poll was taken most honest hunters would say that they have run into more issues with other hunters than they have with anti-hunters by a lopsided percentage. My .02 cents for the day.
  15. Looks official to me. https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28605.html Even the map shown is reflecting these changes. I do like the fluorescent orange rule for gun season. I realize there generally aren't too many accidents, but I've also seen too many clowns walking around in complete camo during gun season and I see this as a rule to protect the brainless like them.
  16. That's for darned sure. Even Cabelas is not half the store it used to be since they've been bought out by Bass Pro. They don't have a fraction of the stuff that they used to sell.
  17. The one big negative for me with these mounts is that they are aluminum. I like steel for high powered rifles. Interesting that they even tell you not to use them with calibers like .338 Win Mag and larger. That would rule them out for the rifle I had pictured since it's a .338 Win Mag.
  18. Maybe some think it's stupid and it doesn't bring in many youth but it sure will be nice being out there with my son and him having a chance at a deer with rifle before the regular November season. And I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who feels this way.
  19. Looks like you have a picattinny rail on it and the rings sure look considerably higher than on my Ruger, be it an older top tang safety version M77. I don't think the dimensions of the scope mounting systems have changed with the more current models.
  20. I've always liked the Ruger M77 family of rifles and felt they never got enough recognition. Their scope mounting system is rock solid, too. Simple yet very effective. I also think the scope is way more than needed for NYS hunting. I don't like all those bells and whistles on a scope to confuse the hell out of me. The Hawkeye is a more traditional rifle that would be better matched with a simpler scope in my opinion. Also, don't you think those scope rings put that scope a bit too high?
  21. Yeah, they definitely look like some rapper bro's from NYC with those earrings. LOL
  22. This is only my second summer running cameras. Have two up now. Went to check them this weekend on my 37 acre lease. Getting lots of deer this summer. Hope they stick around until the Fall.
  23. Most people don't know the difference between air rifles or any other rifle so I don't think they will look to kindly at you shooting one near a populated area. I'd say stick with a .22 for hunting. You can't beat a .22 for squirrels. Get a brick or two of ammo when the prices settle down and you'll be good for a long while. In the meantime I'm sure you can find a 50 round box or two to get you thru the season. No fuss with a .22 and you don't have rediscover the wheel with air rifles.
  24. Maybe you and Bill can have a cage match for the forum championship. We'll put up some billboards on Thruway. "Billy vs. Squirrelly". LOL
