-
Great pic phade!! This was my son 18 years ago....
-
You lucky SOB!! Pop in and keep us updated on your hunts (AND pics)!!
-
Too bad a new refrig wasn't the 1st place prize in the Cabin Fever contest, huh??? Maybe you can work something out with burmjohn!!
-
Sounds like a lame excuse. It must have been updated, as it has this years seasons dates.
-
I think a persons age has a lot to do with their opinions on treestand height too! I was a 25-30' guy, until I hit ~40 or so! Now, 15-20' is just fine!!!

NOT to get off the subject, but I just noticed something on the DEC link on the original post. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/46245.html Junior Hunters may also use a crossbow during the youth deer hunt. (October 12-14, 2013) Did I miss something? I thought crossbows were no longer legal in NYS in any season? http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html

Oh, I never do. I guess it depends how you have your "notification options" set up.

My daughter is 14 and she we are looking forward to the youth hunt this year! In regards to the youth season, I think the DEC could have handled things differently, that would have made more people happy/less concerned. IMO, they should have made it an antlerless ONLY season and limited it to 1. That would have allowed the kids to experience the thrill of the hunt and get their first "taste". THEN, the regular season opener would still be "special", in hopes of getting their first buck. I think this would have satisfied a lot more people!

We've had the same Tappan refrig for 23 years and I've never had to do more than change the lightbulb. (As I knock on wood!!)

There's a local gun auction (Hessney in Geneva) coming up on Sat Aug 17th, that's probably not too far from you. (It's only ~5 miles off the thruway, so it's easy to find and convenient.) I see they have a few brand new unfired in the box Savage .308's listed. http://www.auctionzip.com/Listings/1822736.html Some have scopes, one stainless. Also lots of other calibers to choose from. Might be able to get a good deal on one there.

That's exactly right! Pains me to think about all the deer that get killed for corn crop damage, when coons do more damage than deer! The DEC should tell the farmers to thin the coons out instead!
-
Freekin' 11 coons there stuffing their faces!!
-
Very nice buck!! Interesting choice in his bedding area....

Good year for apples?
Cabin Fever replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Been doing alot of walking/scouting recently. Some crabapple (and wild pear) trees are loaded, some have very few apples, and some have none at all.... Weird. Thankfully, the ones that I count on the most are in the "loaded" category!! -
Oh boy! I didn't think that two of the winners sounded familiar... Of the 2 winners/members, 1 has made 1 post (the one he entered the contest with), and the other has made 3 posts!, neither has visited the site since the day they entered! Good God, they probably won't even be back to get their PM's that they've won! At least 1 "participating" member won! Congrats Growalot! Glad you won the cam too!!

Cabin Fever replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in NY Hunting Calendar / Events
Bump. Starts tomorrow, incase anyone is interested... -
I've not only planted foodplots for wildlife, but have also dug a pond (at the time was the only one in the surrounding area around that I knew of for the critters to get a drink), and planted several dozen sawtooth oaks and Chinese chestnuts (don't know of any other oaks in ~1sq mile), and done habitat improvement. A lot of work and $$$$!! I feel it's my way of giving something back, rather than some guys that just "take"...

I check my cams 1-2x/week. IF it bothers some deer, then so be it. I'm certainly NOT going into bedding areas and disturbing them either though! My kids and I are in the woods year round, doing something (looking for sheds, morels, leeks, scouting & hunting turkeys, camping, mowing the yard & fields, maintaining ATV paths, cutting firewood, pre-season scouting, looking for new stand locations, hanging & maintaining stands, trimming shooting lanes, target shooting, walking the ATV paths to check for trespassing, picking berries, hanging/checking cams, out for a walk to feed the skeeters, squirrel hunting, etc...). I own the land, pay my taxes, it is a year round camp/getaway, and this is how I get enjoyment from my property and justify it. I don't have deep woods to hunt, where the deer probably would freak out over human odor. I'm surrounded by ag fields and an apple orchards, that get plenty of human activity of their own. I really don't think that my activity negatively effects the deer, as they are almost conditioned to the activity (sounds and smells). I'm sure they're aware that I'm there or been there, but I don't believe that's going to send them running for the next county. I'm quite sure guys kill mature bucks on state land, where there is plenty of hiking, biking, camping, screaming kids, etc... too. Plus, when the rut is on, I'll get mature bucks, from God only knows how far away, cruizing my property and they don't give a snot what I did out there over the summer! If someone chooses to stay out of the woods until opening day of season, knock your socks off! Do what you feel is right and what you want to get out of it.
