  1. I bought a container of powered sevin yesterday and paid the yellow jackets a visit! Since I disced, and tore up their hole, they have found it and re-opened it. There must have been a 1000 around there! I slowly walked up to the hole and sprinkled the whole container over the hole and in a 2-3' diameter area around it. Those yellow jackets were "white" as they flew in and out and landed around the hole! LOL HOPEFULLY, they'll be dead along with those in the nest by the weekend! I REALLY need to finish up the plots!! I think I'll check on them later today and see if I see any change in activity around the hole. If not, I think I'll get a fogger, tape it to the end of a long stick so I can stand back, and shove it into the hole.
  2. That "clunk" sound is a common complaint with the Primos cams on the chasingame forums. That was the deciding factor, as to why I didn't buy one. It might not hurt to contact Primos customer service and complain. I've heard good things about their customer service being very helpful and accomodating. They may offer you a newer/better cam that doesn't have that problem or is less noticable. Worth a shot.
  3. We've cleaned, cut into chunks, and frozen before and then later canned with no problem. Sometimes we have some left over, but not enough for a full canner full, so we'll freeze until we get more, then can together.
  4. Forest Hunter - Do you hunt with a muzzleloader? If not, no sense in getting a Super Sportsman license.
  5. I absolutely LOVE canned venison!! It's such a quick and easy meal! If I forget to lay meat out of the freezer for dinner, I just grab a jar of canned venison! Just throw in a skillet for a couple of minutes to warm it up, and you're good to go! Very tender and juicey every time!! I've been out now for 2-3 months and I can't wait until I have that shelf stocked again! I imagine it must have a shelf life, but I've had it from other people when it was 3 years old and it tasted as good as it would have on day 1! Sometimes we add a little salt and pepper to the jar, but other times I don't add anything and just sprinkle some on when I am warming it up. One friend says that he adds a clove or two of garlic to each jar for flavor. One thing I tell people though, is that it tastes a whole lot better than it "looks" in the jars!!
  6. You'll get your regular season buck tag, then an either sex bow tag. If you're in an area with DMP's, you can get 1 or 2 doe tags also. Fill those tags and fill that freezer!! I have non-hunting friends, landowners, and family that like venison as much as I do, so I try to give them some each year also. My freezer and shelf for canned venison has been empty now for 2-3 months, so it's time to re-stock! Good luck and happy hunting!!
  7. According to the Bushnell Trophy Cam manual, during the time lapse mode, it will only take pics during a certain block of time (ie. 7am-9am) that you program. It should not be "snapping pics every few seconds at night without a flash". Plus, it can only be programmed to take these pics every 1 to 60 min, not every few seconds.
  8. I was checking out some videos on YouTube and stumbled across this one. Rage 2 blade bloodtrail with a less than ideal hit. It sure does the job and then some!!
  9. Primos DPS and Plotwatcher cams can only be used as time lapse type cams and can only take daytime pics. Bushnell can be used as either a time lapse plotwatcher or a trailcam with video, plus can take nighttime pics.
  10. If I had my Bushnell TC setup to watch my plots, I could just program it to take say 1 pic every 5min, for the first 2hrs of daylight and the last 2hrs before dark. With that setup, that's only 48 pics/day. With regular Duracells, I get 4000+ pics before they die. Given how much ground deer cover in 5 minutes, can that arrangement ensure that you will catch the exact point where the deer come into the field? That first picture of them, they may already be in the middle of the plot. I like the idea that you can choose only a certain number of hours to be photographing. I think that generally there is not much deer activity in fields to photograph during the middle bunch of hours. 5 min was an "example" for you to see "what is in the plot". Use every 1 min or less if you want to pin-point where they are entering or exiting! My point is you have the freedom to program if for whatever you want. If someone is concerned about battery life so much, then don't program it to take so many pics!
  11. As much as I would like to burn the little bastards and make them suffer, I think I'll sprinkle G-Mans sevin all over the area where they were hovering. That way surely, some of them will get coated and carry it underground into the nest to kill those too. If I gotta take one for the team and get stung a few more times in the process, then so be it!! I've heard several people talk about Sevin and how great it works for about all insects. Still gonna be crappin' my pants though when the time comes that I need to try discing again!
  12. Just looked it up. They are ground nesting yellow jackets. http://www.masterbeekeeper.org/stinging/groundyellowjacket.htm
  13. Well, don't believe everything you read! I saw that the safest time was when it was cool, as the bees would be inactive and lethargic. I went out and started discing again as soon as it was light enough for me so see. They sure woke up in a hurry, as they stung me 3 more times, before I could haul ass outta there!! Little Bastards!! I still hurt like hell from the stings that I got yesterday! Usually, I'm good to go after ~5min. I killed a couple and saved, incase I need to go to the doc, so I can show him exactly what kind they are. I showed the neighbor, who has an apple orchard, and he said they were yellow jackets also. I checked on the spot before I left. There were ~1000 or so, hovering just above ground level. I think they were trying to find their entrance again. Spray would do nothing as they were so dispersed. I was thinking about torching the area, as it's right in the middle of the plot and I have it disced up all around? OR waiting a couple days to see if they found the entrance, see where they are coming and going from, then spray like hell down the hole? OR maybe trying to disc again sometime when it's raining, as I don't think they would come out in the rain?? (OR, have nyslowhand stop over and disc for me, while I sit safely in the truck?) I "have" to get out and finish discing and planting that plot.
  14. Just a friendly reminder if you're going to be doing any plowing, discing, or mowing of your plots for fall plantings to be prepared for yellow jackets! I was discing up an old clover plot to seed some fall plantings. I must have disturbed an underground yellow jacket nest! They hit me like a 3.5" mag turkey load!! I got stung ~20x in the scalp, ear, chin, neck, finger, arm, side, and back. They ran my ass right off the tractor!! Still in pain and swollen the next day! I went back with a can of bee spray to get revenge, but there must have been 1000+ yellow jackets swarming at ground level over a large area, so I backed out. I guess I disced up their entrance and they were trying to find it. They were PISSED OFF!! Determined to finish my plot, so I'm going in again this morning as soon as it gets light enough for me to see, and hopefully before the sun warms them and they get active. Gonna wear a thick winter coat and a head net this time, just incase!! Luckily, I'm not allergic, as I was at camp, far from a hospital. I wasn't thinking or prepared for yellow jackets when I started discing. Just a friendly reminder, that you might want to have Benedryl or something handy, just in case....

  16. I was out discing up a foodplot earlier this afternoon and got stung ~20X! Chased me right off the tractor!! Numerous stings to the scalp, ears, neck, chin, face, all over my side and back, finger, and arm. Felt like I was hit with a 3.5" Turkey load! Normally when I get stung by one, I cuss a few times, but the pain goes away after ~5 minutes. This time, I was stung ~2 hours ago and I am in as much pain now as I was then! My head, which got stung alone ~10x, feels like I was hit in the head with a 2x4! I went out to get a little revenge, but there must have been 1000 swarming at ground level. I guess when I was discing, I must have disced up their hole and now they can't even find it. There were too many scattered all over for me to tackle on my own, so I just backed out. I really need to finish discing! I wonder if I go out some morning at daylight if they'll be active??
  17. Looks like a nice spot Joe! What do you have planted in there?

  19. This time of year, once a week or so. Closer to season or during season, every few days. I like to stay on top of things!
  20. I hunt nearby (~15 miles away) and have apple orchards all around. I'm not the least bit impressed with the deer population in the area. VERY discouraging! I sure envy the guys that hunt in the southern teir when I hear about all the deer down there! I question if it's that we get hit harder in the winter with deep lake effect snow all winter, being so close to Lake Ontario, or the coyote population or what exactly? I dunno. It seems like the deer hit the apple orchards around me later in the season and over the winter. I was told they wait until the apples are almost "mush"/rotten as they are easier for them to get in their mouth (big apples, not crabapples!), easier to chew, sweeter, and have a higher sugar content (more calories to add fat and more energy). I would say scout the property out and maybe throw up a couple trailcams to see whats in the area. Might be a better population of deer than what I have in my immediate area. Don't get me wrong, we have deer, and some good bucks, but you just won't see as many deer as you will down a little further south. Happy hunting!
  21. The 2011 Bushnell Trophy Cams have something they call Time Lapse software using Scouting Assistant. You can program the cam to take a pic of the area at certain intervals in between times that you set. (ie. every 2 min from 7am-9am)
