  1. I'm all for AR, but in my area ,the Amish shoot everything. Most of the deer they take are never tagged , reported, 0r usually poached.
  2. Fallow deer are great eating , if it comes my way ,the amish will have that skinned and quartered in seconds.
  3. I always take vacation time , like 3 weeks in Nov. I hunt from day 1 bow season to the last day of late bow / muzzleloader. I have only tagged out once ,years ago , but that is the only way I'd be done hunting before the season ends.
  4. Good luck and keep looking , you owe the deer that much respect. Check near a water source , creek etc.
  5. It all comes down to morals and family /social values. My father taught me to respect other peoples property whether it was the land or a stand left in a tree. They got there first so leave them alone. Last year , opening day, I had a stand on public land that , I had put up a few weeks earlier but didn't bowhunt it due to weather , wind etc. Well I drive to the spot and there is a truck parked there , still 2 hrs before light. Head in , get close to the stand .I see a flashlight moving around up in the stand . I'm pissed to say the least. Later that day, at dark , I'm at my truck and the owner of the other truck comes out. We talk , he tells about a nice buck he saw . Then I ask him about his spot. Come to find out it was my stand, I describe it etc. He apologizes and asks me why I didn't kick him out. Told him about how I was brought up . He felt bad , apologized, and told me he won't come back because it was my stand . Needless to say , i never saw a nice buck to shoot but did take a doe from that stand . That's just me and who I am.
  6. Last year I bought LaCrosse 10" pacs 2000 gr thinsulate ( google lacrosse 283152) Best , warmest , most comfortable boots I've ever had. www.manistique.freeservers.com/283152.html

  8. She's showing him that bush , maybe making some sort of comparison. That could be a burning bush , I'm just saying.
  9. Congrats and a great feel good story. I have not seen a single deer during daylight since Oct 16 and need a pick me up real soon. Lost my best friend and hunting buddy of 35yrs in April , this years hunt is going to be extremely emotional. Thinking about you buddy , this season is for you . love ya
  10. This spring, I'm going all in on some plots. I have 175 acres and plan at least 3 plots 2-3 acres in size. I have a backhoe, small dozer , tractor and skidding winch . My plan to remove the trees and stumps is to cut the roots on the back side with the backhoe then push them over with th backhoe . Stumps and all will come out with the trees as they are pushed over. Much safer and more efficient , using the tree weight to pull the stumps as the tree falls. Then cutting off the stumps and pulling out the trees with the skidding winch. Clean up with the dozer and filling in the holes. Heavy lime after the soil test then planting around mid June is the plan.
  11. Most falls happen while getting in and out of the stand . 3 points of contact are essential to keep you safe. It may take a few extra minutes but it will save your life.
  12. Something needs to happen ........ I have not seen a deer during daylight since Oct 16
  13. I hunted in west texas on my brother in laws lease, they would let it hang 2-3 days and its 70 during the day and 35-40 at night . Not me, its in the freezer within 24 hrs regardless of how warm or cold it is .
  14. Ouch, no these are Amish not Mennonites, there are no nuisance permits. I have asked many locals about that. I don't think the DEC has a clue as to how many deer are taken in 9k, legally or otherwise. If they are taken legally , I know they are not reported. I heard shots this morning at 6:15 , barely able to see anything, 2 shots from a rifle. The majority of the deer that I have taken here over the last 12 yrs have been gun shot wounded deer ,4 shot in the hind quarters and gut shots. A few years back during bow season , nov 4 to be exact, I saw an amish kid shoot a doe from the property line , the deer hunched up as it ran under me, the kid didn't see me or try to track it .I found it the next morning , still warm ,next to the creek in front of my house. I tagged it so it wouldn't go to waste.
  15. 9k nothing going on during the day . I have not seen a deer during the daylight since oct 16. I'm on vacation from oct 1 to nov 25 ,i have hunted all but 6 days up to now . This is very depressing, due to the fact that the same 4 bucks are walking by my cameras every night between 8pm and 5am.They look at the camera and stick out their tongue just to taunt me . lets see who gets the last laugh .......................................
  16. Scrapes started showing up about 2 weeks ago but lately nothing has been hit . I think the bucks are finding the estrus does and not bothering with the scrapes . No activity during the day for the last 2 weeks, alot of pictures of nice bucks on my cameras at night . Just drove down to charleston, SC and back yesterday . I think all the deer are dead along the side of RT I-79. I saw a lot of nice bucks , dead along the side of the road in West Virginia , . The country is beautiful , oaks and hard woods , just nice looking deer country.
  17. My neighbor has a camp in Birdsall and he is seeing the same thing. A few years a go he would see 10 to 20 deer on opening day , now hes lucky to see 5 . I don't know what can be done , but I just built a 2100 sq ft custom log home on my 175 acres and I don't want to see it up in smoke. Don't get me wrong , my amish neighbors are great honest people , just different reasons to hunt than mine.
  18. I hear you , I'm looking at the same problem in 9K , Conewango valley , Napoli , Cattaraugus. I too practice QDM , have food plots , selective logging etc. I believe the biggest problems are coyotes and poaching. Gastrodoc, you are in an area with an increasing Amish population, and I'll bet you hear shooting at all hours of the day and 365 days a year. Think about it, the Amish don't have phones to report their take , even if they have a license. I have talked to my Amish neighbors and they all brag about the deer that that they shoot ,all year long. About 8 yrs ago , a local jack lighted a 10 pt off the front of my property. I have no proof other than a name ,but it constantly comes up in conversation, year after year. The local DEC and sheriffs , don't want to get involved , they say the Amish don't bother them and they won't bother the Amish. If I say anything, my house gets burned down. Its happened before, twice locally. Its frustrating as all hell , I hope something happens soon before all the deer are gone ..................
  19. Right on .............The casinos don't get built big and beautiful with all the glitz and glamour if people are winning and making a fortune. Bottom line for all the reasons stated above ,I will vote no!!!!!!!!!! The local indian casinos made a deal with NY state and it seems to be working to provide funds for the local towns unlike the so called education fund from the lottery profits. The money for the indian casinos goes back into the local municipalities . In other words it is used locally not to be thrown in to the general fund to bail out NY city and to pay off the politicians.
  20. The last time I saw a deer in the woods was oct 16 ,I have hunted all but 2 days from the 16th. I am getting good pictures of some of the biggest bucks I've seen in the last 10 yrs, all at night about mid night to 5am. Hitting scrapes but seeing few does on the cameras. I have 175 acres of all woods with the neighboring farms still with standing corn. The farms in front and in back didn't plant corn, only oats which are just straw now. All the actvity I have seen is near the corn at either end of my property and in the apples along the creek in front of my house. No chasing as of yet and get this not a single rub anywhere. Many more scrapes showing up daily , just seems like all night activity. I have to head to Charleston , SC for a week , for a family wedding, so I'm hoping some chasing etc. is left after Nov. 4. Good luck to all
  21. I got the email too , the number in parenthetsee ( ) these things, are the permits that will be mailed out because they were denied in the first draw. Great system, you get denied when you get your license , then they mail it to you because their computer program randomly denies more than what is should have issued. Now they spend the money to mail them out plus the man power to coordinate the mailing . How about saving some money and issue them on a first come first served basis, then all the permits are given out and money saved in the long run. I like how they put Cuomo's name in there like he's the fiend to all hunters. What a D$%& head
  22. what is the red thing between the 2 front legs?
  23. i have a ladder stand, low in the creekbed, seems to be the the safest and most protected area. But ,I know the wind direction will be all over the place. 2" of wet snow this morning , sloppy , but nice to be out , to bad the deer didn't cooperate.
  24. Here is a stupid question . Well not so stupid because I'm looking for an answer. When I hear a west wind, is the wind going west or coming from the west? On the local weather they say the wind is west at x mph. Actually ,the wind is going east at x mph , Did I just answer my own question?
