  1. Today, I was out hunting at a friends farm in Collins, NY, 9h, beautiful day, low 40's , front supposed to move in about 4pm, with snow expected tonight. The deer should be up and feeding, so I'm sitting in an elevated stand overlooking a brushy field and a hay field with standing corn about 275 yds away. About 2:15 , 2 doe pop out of the corn and feed along the edge. I pulled out my range finder and ranged them at 303 yds. , so hopefully they will feed up the field and be within 250 yds or less. A dog starts to bark on the other side of the corn field and they start to get nervous and trot up the field in front of me. 2 young average sized doe , so I range the corn across from me at 265 yds , a third much larger doe comes out of the corn and joins the other 2 moving up in front of me at a slow trot, I grunt and they stop, I range the biggest doe at 245 yds. Pull up my T/C Triumph and take a look through the scope. Thinking, I shoot this range at my cabin , during the summer and can put 3 shots in a 3" circle at 250 yds. I put the cross hairs on the biggest doe and let 'er rip , cloud of smoke and they are all are running into the corn. An awful lot of crashing going on , but there are 3 deer going across the corn rows , at the, shot she didn't look hit , no mule kick or falling , stumbling. I'll sit and and wait till dark , knowing right where they went into the corn. I get a call from my friend and fill him in . No deer show up , so we all meet at my stand at 4:30. Head across the field looking for blood , not really expecting to see any, well a spot , then some more, into the corn , you would think somebody had a red paint brush , painting the corn leaves , after about 30 yds., there she lay , a huge doe , a pig , guessing about 175 lbs. live weight. I hit her right where I aimed , mid body right behind the front leg , double lung , absolute most perfect shot I could make . Fill out my tag , quick gut and onto the 4 wheeler, back to the barn , we hoist her up on the scale and she weighs out at 165 lbs dressed . So that would put her about 190 lbs. live weight , from the sight of her teeth , I'd have to say 5 1/2 yrs old. Too dark for pictures on my crappy phone. T/C Triumph with Nikon Omega scope with BDC reticle 150 grain 777 pellets , 300 grain Hornady XTP Mag bullet
  2. Bow season was very sparse as far as deer sightings . Only saw 12 deer during bow season . Solid shoulder hit on a doe opening day of bow . Lost the blood after 60 yds, never recovered , I'm still sick over it. Saw a few small bucks and a few doe. Opening day of gun , took a 10 pt at 20yds as he was trailing a doe. My biggest yet, all 3 of my biggest bucks have been taken within 50 yds. of the same tree stand , took a doe on Tuesday. One more day to hunt with the ML , overall not bad, can't wait till next year. uesday
  3. Ruger Super Redhawk .44 mag., 3x-9x scope , took a 5 pt and a doe out of the same group a few years ago. Taking my .54 cal. TC Renegade MZ and the redhawk tomorrow.
  4. I would shoot them both in what ever ratio, volume, weight you come up with, to be sure they perform the same. Adjusting the loose powder up or down to dial it in.
  5. I cooked up the tenderloins from the doe I got Tuesday. Did them up in a cast iron skillet in butter and chopped garlic, fresh ground black pepper , cooked until med rare and some garlic mashed potatoes . So tender you don't need a knife. , simply awesome. Next I need to grind up some venison and some real fatty bacon & chopped onion .
  6. My 2 sons joined the Air National Guard right out of high school. I told them ,I had some funds set aside , but they would still have student loans after it ran out. My oldest said to me, that I could not provide the funds that he needed, so he researched the guard and they funded his college at one of the best local colleges. My younger saw what the guard provided and signed up. So the money I had set aside for their college helped me to buy the 175 acres , where we are building our log home . Now this will be left to them after we are gone and be worth many times more than what we paid.
  7. I have never seen a buck going through the woods with its head cocked to the side like you would see if it was on a game cart.
  8. Looks like Woody Harrelson. That puppy is wide....................
  9. Opening day in 9S , Allegany State Park at 15yds , following a hot doe . Before he hits the ground 40 yds out, 3 small bucks run in from behind, under my stand then take off after the doe. My biggest to date.
  10. We have about 60 " in orchard park, makes for real quiet walking but an awful lot of heavy breathing and cussing.
  11. My dog had a run in with a porky last year, glad I didn't shoot the Fisher. He let me pull everyone out within a half hr, no infection or any problems after.
  12. Eden , NY is the dividing line for the heavy snow. There are some special rules for hunting the park. No Sunday hunting , no hand gun hunting , no rifles , shot guns must be plugged to only hold 3 shells. ( 2 in mag, 1 in chamber), free park hunting permit , obtained at the park police office. . I always use my muzzleloader. , shoots like a rifle . But then my 10 pt was at 3 yds and my doe at 25 yds.
  13. Congratulations , now your hooked , nothing like the healthy pounding in your chest and being out of breath just looking through the scope . Kind of like the first time ................"..Paradise by the dashboard light "
  14. He had no green card , so by executive action , I had to deport him to my freezer.
  15. It depends on what time zone the server is in . NY hunting forum server is not located in NY, most likely California.
  16. The way I see it, broken racks are from fighting for dominance. That being said, bucks of the same stature and size will compete for dominance. A higher than normal amount of broken racks, tells me there is no alpha buck, which in turn , leads to many fights among the size ,same stature bucks . This is not from the alpha buck beating up on , so to speak, on smaller stature bucks. Is this a bad thing? Yes, if your out for a nice rack and there is no dominant buck , fighting will increase. Bad thing ? No, it tells me there are many bucks in an area , which in turn will provide larger bucks the following year , providing there is an average amount of hunting pressure.
  17. Opening day of gun season in 9s, a 10 pt followed a doe right to me , The buck went down from a shoulder heart shot , then 3 small bucks ran in from behind and took off after the doe.
  18. 9S Allegany St Park , 65000 acres , 58000 acres huntable , bring a compass or GPS , its a big park . Opening day , I got this 10 pt.
  19. IF.......IF the temps are below, say 35 degrees you can leave the hide on as long as you want (like two weeks if you are so bold and can control the temps) and skin/butcher when you are ready with no meat loss due to drying out. Only if temps are conducive though!! The doe I got yesterday , is still in the back of my capped truck . 25 F outside another 1-2 ft of snow coming tomorrow on top of the 4 ft we have now . With the hide on , she's good until I get to her in about 2 days.
  20. Just in Buffalo and south towns and as far east as Attica in Wyoming county
  21. Can you elaborate on your 90/10 ven/bacon burgers? Is it made from 90% ground venison and 10% ground bacon?
  22. Under the snow , the ground is warm so you get a slushy mix that clogs up the chute. I tried my snow blower and went 3 ft in an hr.
  23. Did you smoke it ?I'm going to do the sausage or snack stix in Feb. after all the hunting is over. Looks good , enjoy
  24. A6 , I hear what your saying. My whole bow season was as you described. Only saw 12 deer all of bow season, only 2 spikes and a 6pt.I was bummed just like you . Opening day of gun season, 8;15 , from my treestand, I have a hot doe with a 10 pt in tow , I had to let the doe pass up wind from me at only 5 yds, hoping she wouldn't spook , she dragged that 10 into my lap. Took him through the shoulder and heart at 5 yds. Then 3 small bucks ran in under my stand before the 10 hit the ground , then they took off after the doe. Took a doe yesterday afternoon, amazing part is, this took place in 9S, Allegany State Park, one of the hardest places to hunt. 6 other hunters in our group saw nothing in 5 days.
