  1. I live near Stanfordville and I am interested; have a tag; and interested in a doe for the freezer. Happy to sit where you want me too....
  2. Guns in original condition; even if worn from use; are worth more in the market place if you happen to find a gem. Rubbing off patina is a sure way IF you are lucky to hurt value. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then.LOL
  3. Mossberg and Stevens made 20ga bolt action guns.....also 410's.(and marketed through Sears as J.C.Higgins also when Savage had them) I have a 410 Mossberg NIB.....post pics of the action each side and from the top and that will help. DONT "shine" it up until you know what you have.
  4. $50 rebate right now on the 3-9x40 Conquest..... I have one and a 1.8-5.5x38......both very good buys for the money. 2.5x8x32 VXIII Leupold is also a good buy in the same price range($399).....one of these has been hunted hard and has held up well. Mounts low as well depending on your preference and rifle fit. I have a wide range of scopes and those 3 stand out for the price. Good glass, decent field of view, turrets track good......For long range and darker conditions I have others.......but these three are very good for deer and most shooting.
  5. Heres a secret that will probably get me banned or at the very least shunned by other bow hunters..... Cool looking arrows...the true secret of bow hunting success. I like lightning bolts.....it makes them go faster and hit harder. There I said it........let the chips fall where they may.
  6. A 45 LC (long colt) will drop into a 410......thats the basis of the Taurus Judge handgun. Same rim dimensions for the base. I'm not recommending it;just sayin'.LOL Its also why Brenneke is making 28ga slugs, to introduce a 28ga revolver. Around a .550 bore +/- and did all the research for Taurus. http://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/the-taurus-raging-judge-28-gauge-revolver/
  7. Yes....off Federals box for what they consider a hunting load. I extended the 100 yds for the 20 and 28 as they happen to straddle the 410 and 357 loads at muzzle for a comparison at a longer distance; the 20 being better known to most. Shotgun numbers from Brenneke ammo
  8. I could agree with that; just some rough numbers 410......110gr slug.....580 ftlb at muzzle 28 ga....164gr slug.....1318..............530 at 100yds 20 ga....330gr slug.....1600..............680 at 100yds 357 mag..140gr..........609....federal ammo Know some careful hand gun guys, and while the 357 I would consider just about the minimum for a careful shot, it can be done if selective. They (and I) approach it the same way most bow folks do; looking for that perfect shot. There are always those that will try for shots beyond their weapons or personal capabilities.
  9. Yep.....and I just ordered some. I have a rifle sights and scope capable 28. Can't wait to smoke a yote with one. Wish i could use them for deer here, but will travel next year to a friends where they can be used for deer and pigs.
  10. You could always buy a can of spray paint and get some really cool stickers to put all over it....maybe like some flames. They make everything cool looking.
  11. Not trying to prove THAT point.... I just can't get that worked up over a deer to stretch the law myself......I just do this for fun.And I'll add; I don't always agree with everyones posts all the time.....but on a forum that's a class act to admit an error. We could all learn from that.
  12. no sense for two copies deleted mine......
  13. Although presented different from the web site you are incorrect....they add this on page 51 ͪͪYou may use any centerfire rifle ONLY if rifles are also allowed for deer hunting in that area. (Refer to Legal Implements map on page 24.) Tagged onto the end of the open deer season on page 51 in the guide book
  14. Lots of variety here; all look like some fun choices. For long walks in the hills this year an 8x57 with a small red dot.....just over 6 1/2 lbs. Haven't shot a "big game" animal with the 375 in a while and had some fun with it on woodchucks this summer......so that'll go if I'm gonna sit for a spell. Fun to shoot and accurate, but heavy to walk all day with.
  15. 20 years with a gun and about 6 with a bow.....no lost yet. The last couple years I do not shoot as much either. A few clean miss shots along the way. And one close call.... Shot a doe in an opening day blowing snow that hit way to far forward, creased her the front of her nearside shoulder. Tracked her OK but pushed her out of several beds before I could get a shot. She was bleeding good enough when pushed to keep getting close. Crossed onto property that I had permission to recover from but not hunt. Biggest deer I have ever seen in the woods walked infront of me not 40 yds away; and I couldn't shoot. After another 1/2 hr I heard a shot close enough to scare the crap out of me, the land owner shot the doe I had wounded. I gave him my tag for her. That said I am no virgin to lost game either; just not whitetail. One I know lived and was taken the next year in the same area healed up fine....The other antlers were found a few months later on another hunt by some beaters and sent to me.
  16. Guy I hike with is working on his 46'er patch. I'm pretty sure he brings me along for my memory of the peaks we are looking at and orientation with out looking at the map all the time. LOL
  17. Thats Heart Lake from Mt. Jo......Colden far left,MacIntyre Range,Wall Face down through Indian Pass in the distance.
  18. Yes sir......<<<<sigh>>>> Actually dad was big on making us sit on these rock hard dining room chairs and making us fold our hands like in church. My sister and I would then start kicking each other under the table.....and when mom got out the wooden spoon out.....YIKES; she ment business. How about a 460WBY when on the topic.....what some recoil between friends, shouldn't make a difference.
  19. Field care is important......its a natural product. Dragging hair backwards so you break and bend the fibers and tossing it in a trunk can lead to poor results. The kinder you are and quicker you can cool the hide will lead to best results. Balling up a warm cape soaked in blood is a poor choice too....hang it in a dry, cool to cold location til you deliver it promptly for the taxidermist to flesh out and salt.
  20. If on the North end of the county you can call Frank Zitz..... http://www.taxidermymuseum.com/ Watch this video.....your taxidermist will skin out the actual head thats included in the cost of a mount ;
  21. That's me....all reserved..... Like the guys who stand in the ammo isle and open the boxes looking at the bullet. Pontificating that it really looks like that would kill a deer good with that pointy tip.......mean while its a frangible varmint round. But they have some and they are cheaper than them fancy boxes so I'll get some. But just one box cause I wouldn't want to practice too much......the night before opening morning. <<<<<BIG grin AND laughing>>>>> And having some fun.....
  22. I fail to see what local availability of ammo in a store has ever to do with buying a gun in the US. You still need to find a load if your a factory shooter and with wanting to plink at 500 yds you want to find just the right one. Buy 5-10 boxes and there ya go for a few range sessions.......run low on Sunday and by Wednesday the brown truck brings more. Or do you buy a gun and run to Gander to buy one box at a time? "I can't shoot today; I own a gun and have no ammo" Just keeping it interesting Larry.
  23. What....you folks all read the same boring magazine this month?
  24. Heres about 40.....throw out the high end stuff and an AI....about 30 to browse. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/SearchResults.aspx And some ammo;21 choices...... http://www.midwayusa.com/find?&sortby=1&itemsperpage=20&newcategorydimensionid=9842
