Yes, Melvin is still at the helm. Actually, I have a brand new one in hand that I'm going to do some load work for in the next couple weeks. It belongs to a friend who isn't into the load work like I am! Mine is a left handed and my buddies is RH. I think very highly of his center fire guns also. Melvin is a peach of a guy. If you ever call him, and I highly recommend you do, block off about 45 minutes for the call because he'll talk your ear off and load you up with tons of great info. When he gets bored with it Larry make sure to drop me a line. Good to see some lovin' for the NULA here, and you thought it weren't traditional enough to post Same old same old here.....Rem 700 with some 385 Great Plains hp's....all season including shotgun local.

Micro Stamping Passed in NY Assembly
Dinsdale replied to Mr VJP's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Micro stamping is used in several other applications(aviation and defense parts to track parts and failures).....Everything I have read puts costs at $1-10 per firing pin for engraving depending on quantity.(That's at the mass produced manufacturer end, not an individual replacement part) Pretty proven technology to apply, and just as easy to defeat as a simple emory board will make an illegal firearm untraceable. Sample pic; http://ookaboo.com/o/pictures/picture/25086099/A_40_SW_cartridge_case__The_primer_has_b Just another boondoggle to force gun owners/sellers/makers through more hoops so they give up.....just likr the useless COBIS deal that has cost $10 Million for the last 10 years with ZERO resulting convictions. -
Head to the Catskills....not to far from NYC.....and you can camp anywhere you want below 3500',150' off any trail or water. I camp several times a year when seasons open in the fall; and hikers thin out in the lean-to's then too, esp. during the week (I don't use the lean to's much, tent and tarp combo works best for me). Highly suggest the NY/NJ trail conference map sets for access and private/public locations for a good portion of the area. http://www.nynjtc.org/catalog/maps The Catskill set is very good and was recently updated to include DEP access points and lands as well as the usual NY State.....

Some P-R money spent
Dinsdale replied to Doc's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
States been trying to buy the Follensby Pond property since 1972......so this isn't exactly a new idea. R-P monies are the use it or lose it variety. Due to the way our state conducts business, land aquisition is one of the few ways to do anything with it. Lawdwaz is correct; many states have public shooting ranges paid by for R-P funds. Liability laws in NY perclude this state from doing so; http://www.nrahq.org/shootingrange/pitmann.asp You can see many do, I've been to some of the nicest ranges you will see....and they are state owned. Most local towns would prefer The Nature Conservancy retain ownership, as do the hunting clubs that currently lease the property. The tax implications are looming for many of them..... For those interested here is some reading;Hunting club perspective; http://prfamerica.org/2009/HuntingAccessShouldBeSaved.html This is a good article on how these lands were targeted for preservation(mostly started with Pataki administration); http://www.adirondackalmanack.com/2009/04/how-conservation-easements-have-saved.html Here's a good map of the entire 161,000 acre F/P lands. http://www.adirondackalmanack.com/2008/08/adirondack-finch-pruyn-lands.html The 70,000 acre section is the Essex chain of lakes in general. I do as much if not more hiking/backpacking for hiking sake(although I think I'm always scouting.LOL), and can see issues on both sides. You are incorrect assuming this are of much interest to hiker crowd, they tend to stick to trails, not bushwacking. There are few here and no plans for contructing more due to the land designation. The real losers are the club land leasers, they are done like it or not. It does open their former private lands for all; but at the expense of their improvements. When TNC holds the lands; they allow for multiple use, including logging. I think diverse habitat is the biggest loser here. Once stands mature, game doesn't really like the big woods, and only storm damage spurs diverse habitat. Something my local Catskills suffer from greatly. -
Frankly, chances are you didn't hurt it. Not the greatest thing to do, and avoid it in the future...... Your not exactly trying for 500 yd groups here. That last little bit of rifling and the way it ends on the barrel (the crown).....is the last thing that touches a bullet exiting. That's what makes taking care of it on a short list of important. No sense in scratching on it with an aluminum/brass/carbon shaft with crud on it.....

Since you are a semi-auto, you have 2 choices for barrel cleaning. A bore snake type cleaner that you can pull the fouling away from the reciever....or clean from the muzzle with a rod. If you clean from the muzzle, you are going to want to make provision for the crown of the gun not to be worn from having the rod sliding in and out. This bushing or one of plastic works good for this; http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=965198 Also you will get some nasty fouling and solvents in the reciever/trigger group if not careful. At the end of cleaning a barrel you will want to rinse the area; followed by some compressed air to dry everything off works well too. If you pick up a cheap gun craddle/vise; you can tip the barrel down while cleaning and that will help. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=607786 (I'm just using Midway for examples, you can find this stuff lots of places and for decent prices....)

Agree on the cleaning.....some compressed air can be a big help. On the ammo......plenty at Midway availible. You can usually find a discount code floating around the net...... http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?pageNum=1&tabId=3&categoryId=7556&categoryString=653***690***

Well done on the story Hope it all comes together for you.... Sweet revenge. LOL

Can't argue with that. Here's Alex at SCI doing his demo of a Semprio. What's interesting about reviews of guns often of "different" design, is how the application gets lost. This gun is not designed for a one shot and admire it concept. Good if that first shot hits, but in driven game(what this is built for) thats not always the case when you have moving targets and often multiples. Typical driven stand hunt; Some hunting in Europe requires a shooter to take an entire family unit; does and all dependent fawns as landowner regulations. That's why there is a premium placed on speed of reload. A stiff financial penalty and loss of permission often results for errors made in the field. At the same time much of the world restricts the ownership of any semi-automatic guns......so building a better mouse trap becomes relative. (I still think this particular design is a bit weak ) Another design factor is in switch barrel guns; many countries regulate numbers of guns by a private owner. But that in some cases doesn't limit barrel count; thats why there are several manufacturers offering this feature. One receiver, but many calibers...... but not limited to a single shot as say a TC Encore.......from 17hmr up to 505 gibbs.....Blaser,Merkel,Sauer,Mauser,Krieghoff, and a host of smaller makes; all play in this market. The US is just a tiny fraction of their sales, they don't care how much the guns cost relative to other manufacturers and what we typically buy. Our week dollar compared to the Euro also drives up cost for overseas markets.

BDC= Ballistic Drop Compensating. These are reticles with multiple cross hairs to compensate for bullet drop at longer shot distances. Often they can also correct for crosswind bullet drift. Typically they start to shine at longer ranges or for slower bullet speeds that drop faster (for example a muzzleloader) They go by many names Boone and Crockett, TDS, Rapid Z.....depends on manufacturer. Mil-Dots....also have multiple aiming points along the cross hairs, but the application is a bit different. I agree with most posters....you have a short barrel gun. That means its compact for easy carry....a smaller, lighter, higher quality scope will allow for low mounting and best possible light transmission. Here is an excellent primer for understanding many of these topics and a link to an easy to understand glossary; http://www.opticsplanet.net/how-to-choose-riflescope.html

I've shot one.... The action is very nice, super tight and no play for any of it's travel. Great trigger, good thought out way to change barrels and better bolt head design than most, very light and when ready balanced well. But WNY you are correct....the movement is poor. It's not to bad at a stationary target, but this gun is designed in large part to do driven game, so the extra time to reaquire the reticle is self defeating when you add in the swing of the gun, IMO. I'd love to own a 450/400 double K-gun, and I had a K80 12 ga.; Krieghoff makes good stuff. But they entered a market(switch barrel guns) that others are doing better. Pump idea just put them doing their own thing for a different mouse trap....sales are not supposed be all that good. Alex Diehl the N. American Head honcho hunts near me......I've known him since he ran Blaser NA out of Maryland......

I use mine for Coyote, often at night....and deer.
-
Buy good glass, low light is when it pays.....every scope looks good at noon (Well not really, but most are clear, edge to edge distortion, clarity suffers in poor scopes) You don't have to get a plex reticle.....I hunt almost exclusive with a German #4 (thats heavier on both sides and bottom post. Helps at night.

February 11, 2011 5:35 AM Associated Press KINDERHOOK -- A couple of residents of Kinderhook in Columbia County collected dozens of dead birds that fell from the sky and littered their yards and nearby tree branches. It turns out that they were European starlings that were poisoned by a U.S. Department of Agriculture program to eradicate bird flocks that threaten dairy farms. Carol Bannerman, a USDA spokeswoman, tells the Kingston Daily Freeman that it's not an uncommon practice for farmers to use pesticide-laced bird seed to kill flocks of starlings. Usually, they die on the farmland, but in this case, the farm was close to town so the bodies were found by rather startled residents. European starlings are an invasive species and as such aren't protected by law like native songbirds are. Bannerman said huge flocks of thousands of starlings may settle on a farm and devour large quantities of feed set out for the cattle. From;http://www.cbs6albany.com/news/starlings-1282774-flocks-columbia.html I used to kill a few hundred a year on a few local dairy farms. It's culling, that simple. One could say you benefit from the target practice. By poison or gun, job needs to get done sometimes.....

Wow.......birds couldn't pose better if asked.

Dismal showing in that game 7.....after they blew that 3-0 lead last game,I gave up hope....... Girl I was to take decided to go with someone else (uncle I think), missed a bird, had her shoot way to far IMO. I drove above and glassed what was to be "our" spot; 2 tom's 10 yds from my blind that I built. Wish I could hunt that spot, but I got permission for 1 young hunter only.....maybe next year.
