I have taken more than a few deer with a 223 using heavier bullets and they all performed with excellent results. All done with about a perfect set up as they get; great rest, relaxed animals. Would I push it past most Whitetails encountered here?, No, but it works. Bows kill by bleeding out an animal and energy is required to pierce the skin and vitals by cutting action. Bullets kill by hydrostatic shock, that shock may disrupt blood vessels, deflate lungs, disrupt CNS, etc; and you get mechanically striking the same. Federal makes a 60 gr Partition load, may have to look around for it. I'd also try a TSX or TTSX but not sure who loads them factory.

The bow guys are getting worked up about range on a few threads the gun guys should have some fun too; this is a good topic. Maybe Borns' 223 thread will gain a little traction......small caliber for deer often do.

5 year old thread.....quite a few members who posted are still here too. Looking to stir the pot a bit, eh?

Or a couple of really nice pens.

Nice idea. Look forward to more awesome pics.

Good stuff! Best of luck in the field.

Talked to an outfitter in South Dakota today about a Pronghorn hunt he's trying to fill a few spots for cheap..... Average shot is 40yd and be prepared for 60yd for his terrain and set up. Confident at 50, ironic is I need a new place to practice in the wind. The valley I shoot in is terrific for always being dead, but now I want some crosswind to play. Shopping for airfare this evening, he does have a group that may buy all three tags that have first dibs, so we'll see.

I thought the same thing. On another note that is a very nice Tahr he shot.

All you gotta do is shout at the deer your shooting something that Roy' put his name on and they fall over from fear anyway..... And you save the 3 bucks.

Depending on the shotgun I shoot mostly steel for squirrels. South Dakota accepts Fiocchi's "golden pheasant" loads on some of their lands......a nickle plated lead ammo. Nickle plating isn't broken down if ingested. But its loaded hot and I have a unique bolt action gun where I had EXTREME pressure signs using it. Had to hammer the bolt open.....and that same gun frame will shoot a 416 REM magnum, they are fine through it with some toasty loads and same barrel uses 28ga Brenneke slugs without issue. Seem OK in a O/U I have but I won't try it through constricted chokes.
-
I shoot some bismuth in a older gun not rated for steel shot in the older barrels, considered a safe alternative for the barrels. Less expensive.....LOL.....I guess a Mercedes is cheaper than a Rolls Royce.
-
Rio isn't exactly new......Spanish make that has been around a long time. Same parent company owns Eley brand ammo, bought a ex military facility in Texas.

Horse meat can be damn fine table fare. Zebra is at the top of the list for for any game meat I have ever taken. Seal is OK; never tried Whale but maybe someday.

Friend hates the short hop to Florida from downstate here.... Longest flight I have done was just over 16 hrs this past spring. Longest in transit was about 34hrs door to door with a 13 hr flight in there. Makes them 3 or 4 hr ones like you barely got off the ground before you landed!
-
Uh....I have no problem with flight time, done some of the longest routes. Airport layover time has got to suck the worst.

PETA here means "people eating tasty animals" Welcome.

He buys a fixed power scope and you can be boy friends.

Hmmmm....tall order for sure. Although you get surprised sometimes. Sat on a bus at random at SCI show in Reno some years ago....maybe 2007? Guy next to me happened to be from southern part of Dutchess county where I hail from. Turns out he ran a set of delivery trucks I see around and had completed his Capra slam (thats goats...including a Markhor from Pakistan.<Google that) And was only a Okhotsk Snow sheep away from his Ovis (sheep) world slam. Thats like 24 animal species and a huge chuck of change. Trucking business was good to him.

Have a guy on another forum who loaded some of the CEB for a hunt in 375hh for plains game hunt. Boy did he have terrible terminal ballistics. Almost got his PH gored by one pissed off Bushbuck they went after in the thick. Great shot placement and crappy results. Guess it happens with all of them eventually.

I'd hope so....thats exactly what they are designed to do, shed the front part as they peel open. You want a different outcome need to pick a better construction for higher weight retention. Driving the 180gr at 300WBY velocities (3000fps+) they do a hell of a job on broadside shots on deer and larger game. And I'm not imaging that! Now Swift Aframes and Trophy Bonded Bearclaws....the few I have recovered have over 90%+ retention on heavy game (500lbs plus) from 2650-3100+ velocities (30-06 and 300RUM). Some of those have made length wise exits chest through hams from the RUM on deer sized game.

Cooled a bit here so took the rifle for a walk looking for early bear. Didn't see much, almost popped a black squirrel on the way out but I want the skin and didn't want to make a mess. Fun to be in the woods for big game so early.

LOL.... I can see that.....good stuff! You need to scan those old pics. The other half of my story was I bought a cheap foil pan at a local store and used the coffee pot in the room and the bottles of shampoo to reboil my skull as it was a bit stinky and I wanted to put it in my carry on. Ahhhh....lavender fresh. I got awesome response when it went through security x-ray. Everyone wanted to see it! Got a escort by a x-pat former South African hunter who walked me right past the rest of passport lines and such to get checked. Bought him a beer as he went off-duty to hang out.

Have a bear that occasionally makes his way through my yard in the neighborhood so thats the target.....not a shooter in my book as he's young, but first resident bear that has been here in a few years. I hunt some public land so I won't be using it much there, one place is a few hours away and the other gets pounded and stands stolen all the time. Bought two and the other is destined as a tip on a future hunt that I have plans cooking for...

Well thanks to a post here by phade I have joined the trail cam club. Asked a few questions, got what I feel were good answers; so went with a Browning that he had a very competitive price for and great reviews. Prompt shipping with no hassles, would recommend his services, and nice to give a spot of business to a forum member.
