  1. Went to Bascom's today in New Hampshire and bought a few odds and ends when friend was shopping for some stuff. I could drop $10K in that place in about 10 minutes, but then I would HAVE to make syrup! Been to demo event there once before and them folks understand customer service, just plain nice to deal with. I'm a nobody and they always have time for a question no matter how stupid on my part. Home made arch using scraps and fire brick off various jobs and some sheet from a couple of stock trailer rebuilds, with 1" insulation you can stand right next to it at full tilt. Built over a weekend when I already had taps in the trees, necessity is the mother of all invention after all.LOL Started with the 3 pans, but have a Lapierre SS cross flow welded pan for the top that I bought used and was designed for any 2x4, even a drop flue. test run when built;
  2. Muledeer with a picture using some weathered pine;
  3. I have a Kryptek jacket/hoody I bought on a hunt for an extra layer.... I like it. I have a few Sitka,Firstlite,Kuiu pieces and its pretty nice for the price. Runs good for size IMO as I also tried on pants. I don't care if I have a matching set of anything...... Check Linton Outdoors, or Mountain Archery's "Deal of the Day" email sales for some decent prices if you know what you want and size.
  4. Re doing a main line for my gravity tubing on one section of 120 taps as I want to relocate tank to better spot, allow my to catch a few trees on tubing that I have done on buckets. Bought a new pan for the arch. Got jammed up last year with a new project needing to be dried in starting in Feb and March, left for a 3 week hunting trip/vacation in April i had to prep a few things for; so this year should have time to make a better run of it. Can tap up to 250+/- but been keeping under that as it will require a better evaporator and I've had issues selling sap and not doing that again. Friend was boiling my sap, but he sold his equipment. Just a hobby, I give much away and sell some here and there.
  5. I'll swap syrup for honey..... Send me a PM and we'll figure something out.
  6. Sure you can, just make a list and do some poking around now. Another hint: you can almost always cut a deal by dropping some cash at a show right there on the spot even if there is not a "show special". Some outfitters will use a few agents to get some spots filled. However I have never met an outfitter that didn't need some sort of sales approach beyond just sitting back and hope camp got filled. Many who skip the show circuit do reflect that in their pricing however, so it can be to a potential hunters benefit to poke around some for good guys who may be flying under the radar. For plenty of folks it can be that one trip of a lifetime, and they may not get a repeat customer. I have done a fair amount of trips, and used some fishing guys each a couple times and one hunting place as a repeat, but nothing else; there's maybe a handful I would go back no questions asked. Others I would be a reference, and a few I would be so-so. Important aspect of word of mouth referrals is to make sure your expectations match who you are talking with. I have done one hunt where in the end what I had in mind and what the guy I talked too thinks is a great time didn't match well. I no longer book hunts that way. I may get a lead like that, but I do all my own in depth research to make sure its what I want before dropping the coin. Can't tell you how many hunters I have met that had a lousy trip, and really its their own fault for not getting first hand knowledge of all the who, what, where, when, why, and how's. When booking I typically have a few places in mind and have used the shows to finalize details and hand over deposits (I pay and negotiate every thing in cash).Great way to size up who you are talking too, and I often don't let them know who I am until after we talk for a spell.
  7. I've shot and hunted with suppressed rifles, as recent as April of last year (308Win). First thing I'd buy if/when I get out of NY gun related. Eats up recoil, easy on the ears; whats not too like?
  8. Planted some grapes on a tower blind and they are doing great, plants from local winery I was renovating; but I think a wild variety would be more hardy.
  9. "There is a mod called "The Poor Man's Trigger Mod". It entails a #144 spring from Ace hardwrae and trying various shims under the sear to reduce sear engagement." Yep, I'm familiar with poor mans mod. Yo- dave was basically the same thing, I even think the included spring was the Ace one. Uses some plastic tubing to take up slack around one of the pins in trigger group. I like 10 shot groups and have that bigger mag just so I don't have to swap them out for a string. But ya' don't hunt it either.......
  10. FS with the DIP trigger guard and 527 metal end cap fitted ghost ring replacement rear sight blade Trainer with 1.5-5x20 in Burris rings (swapped out new DIP in that too) Both of these have the timneys. I'd add that I have a bunch of the metal 5 shot magazines; but the plastic are lighter and don't clank around when you have a pocket full. Not sure they are worth the money. Have one 10 shot that looks goofy when inserted. JMO
  11. The rimfire trigger is a whole different animal.... I own several 452's all in 22lr. Did the yo-dave kit in one, its OK. Found 2 Timneys cheap on line and installed both of those and I happen to like them as I hunt all my guns and the triggers down in the ounces like the bench rest guys have don't interest me when wearing gloves. 2 like CCI SV one likes Aguila ammo. Interesting that none like the Wolf match that is often touted on RF Central for CZ's. Most accurate is the full stock, which is another fluke that is often noted on RF Central by CZ owners. Have DiP bottom metal too;<) Scope on the Trainer and American, ghost ring for the FS. Burris Signature with the inserts.
  12. this one is mine, just under 500 lbs (5 80lb bags of concrete and steel frame) Moves easy with the skid steer. Just need the right piece of equipment; just sayin'.
  13. Sorry to hear about the rifle issue. Like I said, deer come tough in 3A...... Got to cover some ground to find places; I've hiked almost all the Catskill 35 and you need to be out there to find some good spots, but they're there. I don't always take my GPS, but my older Garmin 62 gets signal where the E-trex is a POS in timber and steeper terrain so I dumped it and use the older unit. Keep after it.
  14. I think your list looks good, about the same here and I've been at this for a spell. I do some backpacking so always counting ounces to shave here and there while staying prepared. Hunting 3A is tough in the hills, but lots of fun. Good luck!
  15. If you sign up for the Kuiu email updates you'll get a code for a discount too, I did anyway some months ago. I think even at full price their gaiters are a solid purchase, so something off is just gravy.
  16. Nice area, with some snow around it'll be easier to find the better areas. I'll be west of you a bit. IMO skip the bear spray. Hiked a bunch of miles in the Catskills all seasons and you just don't get bear encounters like that especially hunting. Maybe around a cabin where folks are getting dumpster divers some idiot will get a bear on the deck where they left trash. On ground sheet; With some cord, you can hang fresh quarters off a tree to keeps things off the ground, although snow is great if you have it. Take a couple plastic trash bags (unscented kind) they work good; I carry some house wrap but get mine off jobs anytime I want. I read about these deer drag efforts here and think folks are crazy. I field quarter everything unless I can actually see the car. You can still hang and age quarters if thats your thing. Maybe want to look at "gutless" methods around you tube and/or traditional field quartering. I like bone in as it gives some shape to carry, but have boned out too.
  17. I have some OR's...... Little noisy for deer, better for open country. Look at Kenetrek or Kuiu.
  18. Been in a couple of goat ropes, not with deer, but all the same.....always 10 anytime I start hunting even out the back door. Gun without ammo is nothing but a club.
  19. Those are replacements for a barrel with dovetails. Try this for ribbed guns; https://www.truglo.com/firearms-turkey/pro-series-magnum-gobble-dot.asp?catid=F41C40D155E44609874F4225CB2A7EC2
  20. End of a nice streak. Went to hang a fresh target on my place to check a zero before the rain this morning and a fresh rub not 5 yds from my 100 yd backstop popped up last night. Expect its the 8 pt chasing my yard does around. With this moon they are moving middle of the night, glassed them at 3am moving through but didn't see him.
  21. I wouldn't be crying over the car damage. Just sayin'
  22. I have a virgin 6.5x55 barrel sitting in the safe a few years, about time it went afield, Woodleigh PP 140gr. Blaser R93. Hope the swede brings some luck. Savage 220 with Hornady SST's for shotgun area. Rem 700 for muzzleloader, 110gr pyrodex and 285gr conical.
  23. I handled a pre production LAW and own a Bansner (his shop and does the stocks). Very slick gun IMO, but be aware there were production problems with deliveries and accuracy; enough so that a few folks involved left the company. (One is a frequent poster on another gun orientated forum I browse) I'm not sure how things are going now for them, as it took the shine off for me and I haven't followed along on any developments. But I like that Ed Brown design and it has some nice features. Owned one Weatherby, one of the Sauer made W. German guns and it was customized with claw mounts and double set trigger, removable brake. 300WBY and a real tack driver in a synthetic stock. Easy to shot gun as it fit me well. Have a 300WBY in another brand now for a 30 cal magnum, and have dabbled with the 257WBY in the past.
  24. DMAP type are for in season antlerless only DDP (deer destructive) sometimes allow for bucks. Back years ago when doing DDP shooting, that had to be out of season but one place had antlerless only and two had any sex. Like Grow said. maybe things have changed.
