  1. They grow up so fast.....sniff sniff..... I got something in my eye is all. LOL Damn good season Joe.
  2. A couple more pics here; http://www.hudsonvalleysportsman.com/index.php/topic,14672.0.html
  3. Gettin' you're Robert Ruark on.... Nice.
  4. They have one using heavier duty #22XT blade or 60's, called a Havalon "Bolt" Correct you can't "heal" over with even the thicker blade, not made to function that way. Have a drawer full of standard folders and fixed and they make good give aways now after having several Havalon products.
  5. Shot a doe with one on Sat.; first time using them. Slight quarter away in at mid ribs and out back edge of off shoulder. Made 2 holes and plenty of damage in between. Shoot very well in a Savage 220 so til' I get a few more samples they are fine by me.
  6. And another HVS member thats here too;<) Yep, I'd keep that stand location..... Nice deer!
  7. Quite a few HVS members here if you look around..... Lots of good folks here from all over the state. Welcome to the board.
  8. I always run a light solvent and a dry patch from a long term oiled barrel. Adding extreme heat to barrel oil just makes for nasty junk to cook inside and tougher to remove deposits. Dirty bore for almost everything when hunting. Some rifles absolutely will shoot different clean vs dirty, and others not as much/at all for my rifles. YMMV
  9. Copy and paste from a gunsmith that has done some stuff for me.... Lots of different products out there, just what I do. All brass brushes, bore guide, one piece rod like Tipton or Dewey RIFLE CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS 1. RUN 1 PATCH, WET WITH SHOOTER'S CHOICE, THROUGH THE BORE. 2. WET A BRUSH WITH SHOOTER'S CHOICE , THEN RUN IT THROUGH THE BORE APPROXIMATELY 10 TIMES. 3. RUN 2 PATCHES WITH SHOOTER'S CHOICE AGAIN TO CLEAN OUT ANY DIRT LEFT FROM BRUSHING IT OUT, THEN RUN 2 DRY PATCHES THROUGH AGAIN TO DRY THE BORE. 4. RUN 2 PATCHES SOPPING WET OF SWEET'S SOLVENT THROUGH THE BORE AND LET STAND FOR APPROXIMATELY 10-15 MINUTES.***** 5. RUN 2 DRY PATCHES THROUGH THE BORE TO DRY AFTER SWEET'S SOLVENT. 6. IF THE PATCHES COME OUT WITH A FAIR AMOUNT OF GREEN (MELTED COPPER) A SECOND BRUSHING WITH SHOOTER'S CHOICE IS RECOMMENDED. 7. SWAB OUT THE CHAMBER WlTH A BORE MOP. 8. APPLY SHOOTER'S CHOICE TUBE GREASE TO REAR OF LOCKING LUGS OF BOLT AND ON THE REAR OF THE BOLT (COCKING CAM). ******DO NOT LET SWEET'S SET IN BORE FOR OVER 30 MINUTES. SWEET'S WILL ETCH THE BORE TRIGGER MAINTENANCE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE DONE AT EVERY OTHER CLEANING OR WHEN THE RIFLE HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO A LOT OF MOISTURE. 1. PLACE THE RIFLE IN A PADDED VISE AT A HORIZONTAL POSITION, REMOVE THE BOLT AND SQUIRT LIGHTER FLUID INTO THE TRIGGER. LETTING IT DRIP OUT THE BOTTOM. 2. REINSTALL BOLT AND DRY FIRE-SEVERAL TIMES THIS WHOLE PROCEDURE SHOULD BE PREFORMED AT LEAST TWICE. 3. LET THE LIGHTER FLUID EVAPORATE, THEN REINSTALL BOLT. 4. CAUTION: DO NOT SUBSTITUTE THE LIGHTER FLUID WITH ANY OTHER SOLVENT. THE LIGHTER FLUID WASHES AWAY MOISTURE AND FOREIGN MATERIAL AND LEAVES A MICROSCOPIC LUBE COATING.
  10. I see good reviews of these in several places. I have the shorter Stoney Points and always carry them.
  11. Well on finally on my way to do something about finishing a place for mounts.... Did my annual cleaning today for mounts but they will be staying in assembly area of my shop so I can start finishing up some lighting/wiring and then floorimg/trim/paint. This is about 2/3, some shoulder mounts are at an friends place, some skulls and skins are boxed up, and some stuff I can't move alone(life size Nyala and bases). Pedestals for the 2 Kudu,Oryx(Gemsbok), Bou' I left and can move around as I built them with casters. Should have another crate coming anyday from last hunt with some more junk.
  12. Good on all who are willing to help out. Good thread;<)
  13. Oh crap..... And here I have been hunting in Africa a couple times looking for an Elk. Duh! Should have been going West not East. I feel so stupid right now.
  14. Just curious on the Waterbuck; Defassa or Sing-Sing ? (If you know) I have a takedown rifle made by a company called Blaser, roughly 40 calibers are availible in a drop on fit.......I own(ed) several calibers for it, about a dozen I think. But last trip was a plain old 30-06 ,shot up to Gemsbok/Zebra sized game. I had an offer for a Giraffe bull (about 3000lbs) and I would have been fine for caliber bullet choice with a neck or heart shot. I didn't take Giraffe in the end as other interests kept us hunting on the property I was on, trophy fee was fair and probably should have made a side trip out of it in hindsight. I have travelled with 300RUM, 270 Win,30-06 with the Blaser to Africa. Other calibers have made other trips. I also made a African hunt with a 375HH in a custom rifle and took quite a few head of plains game, up to a 2200lb (live weight) Eland. Same trip the rifle shot a 18 lb Common Duiker and all manner of game in between. Its just a great all around choice for easy to find ammo if jammed up and hits with authority. In addition I have used 223Rem for a cull, 243Win on a Kudu, 8x57 various. Most locals there hunt plains game with "our" typical Whitetail calibers....243Win,270Win,308, 30-06,7x57,8x57; As a travelling hunter if you draw blood you pay the trophy fee recovered or not, so it makes more sense to be practiced well, have good ammo, and shot placement than to carry a 300 magnum that makes you flinch. But a heavier caliber can work if it can be shot well. If you follow my posts when bullet choice comes up in a topic, I always shoot a firm constructed, standard to heavier for caliber bullet. I set all my guns up the same....A-frames,TBBC's, Woodleigh's. I believe in 2 holes or breaking bones if I can get it. Some critters are tougher than others, Kudu are on the soft side, Gemsbok pound for pound are tough IMO. I have very few bullet recoveries and all Gemsbok have had a bullet in the offside skin. If you buy the beer, I'll be happy to buy the dinner to go with it.
  15. I have hunted the Pyrennes but from the Spainish side for Chamois......But stayed for a couple nights in Andorra. (Andorra is a prinicpality, like Monaco for example, between Spain and France. I didn't connect on a animal that was up to my liking but we did see a fair amount of game. Same trip, but further south in Spain, I was successful on Boar,Mouflon, and a couple Fallow. I did driven Boar with dogs and beaters near Portugese border and it was a hoot! Highly recommend it for an experience. I know a very good American booking agent that has a quality guide in France that I could put you in contact with......happens to also live in NY. I had a toss up for another African hunt this past year or France and happened to pick Namibia as the outfitter/PH there has limited bookings and he happen to have a spot open for me to fit in 10 days with him. (was interested in Roe and Chamois) Be aware however European hunting is not inexpensive and can cost a good buck unless you have some local hunter connections; with family there you should be able to cultivate some I would hope..... Most trophy cost is based on score using CIC methods (typically weight of cleaned skull and antlers) and top quality specimens can get scary expensive in a hurry! Sometimes you can get a "any trophy" pricing but that doesn't always mean the guide will put you on gold medal animals. Not trying to scare you away, just have to ask the right questions to fit what you want in a hunt.
  16. Glad you had a good time..... Damn funny when they open and inspect guns right there on the concourse isn't it? LOL Africa can get really addicting to visit and hunt. I thought I could move on after last trip, and although some other destinations are on my short list, I'm already tempted for going again next year. I feel like a damn crack addict. Frankly I'd go more just to hangout, but its a PIA to find someone to watch my dog for 3 or 4 weeks. Good shooting.
  17. I want to find a 220 load for my barrel at some point..... 240 must be extra heavy for caliber.LOL
  18. They asked $925, but I think they sold for less.
  19. Always have a pair hunting, Nikons ride in the car all the time. I did about the same some years ago for my Swaro SLC's(maybe 450?) . Always can find good deals on top glass and have someone else pay the retail pricing if you shop careful. Just missed some Lieca 10x Ultravids a few weeks ago on another forum, next time I won't wait so long to type an I'll take it. LOL
  20. Building there now (addition/renovation for City folk on a farmhouse).... Seen a few nice deer in and out of job, still some agriculture in area so some good food sources around. Trying to get some permission to hunt property I'm working now.
  21. 180 gr Trophy Bonded Bearclaws.... I like 2 holes, have been accused of taking unconventional angles for shots and breaking bones. Gun likes them too;<)
  22. That's some damn good eats! Congrats on the nice animals. Like Pygmy been in several bush planes and a couple sport planes too. Had a client who flew G 5's and got a ride in one from the right seat. Same guy had a couple planes at home and I spent more time upside down in his Citabria than right side up......good stuff. Always said if I didn't spend my money on guns and hunts it would have been on flying a plane.
  23. Not true..... Some worms are freeze resistant. And most folks don't freeze cold enough (20 days at minus 5* for pork)
  24. Good eats in my book. Go the quartering route, it'll cool fast as a bonus. I'll never understand why folks think they need to bring big animals out in one piece. Good stuff on youtube on how to skin and cut.
