Thats what I love about this time of year just walking through the woods relaxed and so are the deer so if ya spook them it doesn't matter... CNY

Went for a walk on saturday thought there would be enough snow melted to find some sheds... Boy was I wrong there were some areas that the snow was gone, but the main area's that I've been seeing deer in and where I wanted to check still had about of foot of snow. Add to that the foot and a half that just got dumped on us I think its gonna be April by the time I get out there. Hows everyone else making out? CNY

Likewise ;D

Error on the side of caution and then you get surprised when it works right lol

String life depends great on a number of things......................use, care and storage. If I was going on a payed/guided OR even unpaid/unguided hunt out West (that far from home) and my string was more than 1 1/2 yrs old. You can bet it would have a new string on it. Prior to the trip and had been shot to make sure POI was on. Strings stretch as well and can effect the performance of the bow, even slightly. Do I replace my string every yr. NO, I usually trade off or buy a new bow before I wear out a string................................... FDXX75 Here Here, that type for trip I would replace it. Why leave one more thing to worry about? Make sure you practice and train, and by train I mean run a mile then have your bow ready to shoot a couple arrows when you get back and your out of breath. That mtn air will kick our eastern butts, our mtn's should really be called hills compared to theres lol. Goodluck bagging that elk of a lifetime CNY

+ 1 more for the cut on contact at that low weight. I would also look into magnus buzz cuts thier a good head with a lifetime warranty (I think don't quote me on this). The only thing is I'm unsure if they have a head that is only 75 grains. The reason I would shoot a cut on contact is. Depending on your shot angle, distance, etc. I doubt you will get a pass through. That being said, I would want something that is still cutting everytime that deer/arrow moves. If you got a good sharp broadhead in there ripping things up as the deer runs away, even without the advantage of two holes it should do the job well. With a mechanical the blades, you run the risk of the blades folding up and not doing thier job once they have lost thier forward KE. Hope this helps and good luck with the wife. P.s. I had a GF once that was a big hunter, while it was nice that she was more understanding with the fact that hunting comes first not her lol.... However, then I spent more time trying to get her things all set up, that mine got swept under the rug. In light of my experience I enjoy my alone time away from the woman. To each his own and I hope everything works out for you. CNY

Not as far as I know. I actually asked an ECO about baiting coyotes and he said that its perfectly legal. Of course we dont have bears where I live so that might throw a curve ball into the mix.

Once the estrous is in the air he'll be bound to screw up hopefully you'll be there to catch him when it does happen. Good luck with finding his sheds too. CNY

Here's some old ones but probably my two favorite. I don't have many pictures either, because I use video mode a lot I feel I catch more with video than I do with pictures. Anyways here they are. CNY

How'd you know he is 2.5 years old? Body charcteristics and his rack was as wide as his ears which on my farm usually means that thier at least 2.5. Could of been older could or been younger no way to tell for sure without looking at thier teeth. Hopefully I'll be able to tell ya for sure next fall lol... UPDATE: I've spotted one more buck using my field at night on a regualar basis as well..... and boy is he a dandy well outside his ears and tall. He's pushing 140 gross and im seeing him almost every night i go spotlighting. I can't wait to see what he turns into I'm pretty sure I know where he's bedding so I'm putting a camera in between the field and bedding to see if I can get some close up shots of him. The medium 8 and small spike/4 are still visiting on a regualar basis as well, and all three were spotted together after the superbowl on sunday. CNY

Awesome mount congrats... It makes it even cooler that you got to watch him grow up. My mount was $512 with tax just fyi CNY

Did some spot lighting last night to check for head gear saw a decent 2.5 8pter and either a spike or 4 pter with him both still had there head gear on so I'll be waiting for a lil more snow to melt before I make any trips looking for sheds Goodluck CNY

Hey guys wondering if any of you out there have made a blind for your dog before. I have a couple ideas, so I was looking for input on mine and possible new ideas from you. Idea #1 - I have half doz. of the super mag shell deek's I was thinking about trying to put one of those on a small platform and then practicing with my dog to "Kennel" underneath it? Idea #2 I have an old kennel that I was thinking of painting and then putting straps around it for stubble. Idea #3 Get/design a set of plans and build one out of cheap piping and burlap camo. Like I stated above I have some super mags so any shortcomings I hope I will be able to hide with a decoy if need be, but I would like to simply rely on the blind to do what it is supposed to do. Thanks for any help in advance CNY

Hey guys next weekend, I'm going to be heading down to 3H to do some Mzl with some buddies just wondering how much snow is down there? Thanks CNY

Congrats on your snow goose they can be very hard to get to come to your spread that guy sounded awful lonely lol. Just saw my first flock of snows (this year) yesterday on my way to work must of been 500 of them now I gotta figure out what field they're going to. Congrats again CNY

Pass shooting them as they go over the house, done that as well, but I don't really consider that crow hunting thats more along the lines of crow shooting lol. I was talking more along the serious lines, your blue jeans kinda stick out in a snowy hedgerow lol. CNY

Its a great time not as easy as you would think though. They are really smart birds that are wary all times of the day (when they're hungry in the morning is when they are the most vulnerable). Watch flocks of thousands head to the city to roost at night so I will be doing my part to conrtol the pop. after deer season. I'm gonna try and use it as a training session for my pup. Its almost the same thing as duck hunting except with crows.
-
Its def. something to consider, keep us posted if you do decide to do that. Any results good or bad will be appreciated. CNY

If you got cameras put them back out after the season once you start getting pictures of bucks with one or no antlers start looking. Walk slow your stalking the antlers except they don't get up and bust off when you almost step on them so make sure you take your time and keep your eyes moving. Theres def. a learning curve the first few times I went out I got goose egged then everytime after that I had success because I learned what to look for and took my time. Goodluck CNY

You know I've thought about that, but when I shot a doe with a bow I went back to the same stand and hunted over the gut pile with the intentions of shooting a yote with my bow or a big buck if he happend by . However, when I got to my stand (I still hunted to the pile/stand in case there were 'yotes already there) I kicked 5-6 hawks off the pile and sat the rest of the night only to see 2 more hawks come and feed on the pile. The next day I went back to check on the pile and it was pretty much gone and there were no canine tracks of any kind in the area. I thought (and I assuming so you did too) that every gut pile goes right to the yotes, but just goes to show ya that when you think you got it all figured out.....you DON'T lol So in short to answer your question I have no idea if it would make a difference or not. Like I said previously Coyotes can have up to a 10 mile range so I think they just do thier loop like they always do and if they happen to be around when you shoot a deer kiss the guts goodbye if not it might sit there for a week untill they make it back through on thier rounds (that is if the birds don't get to them first). coyote impack on small game
CNYlungbuster replied to sweet old bill's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I too have seen a jump in the number of reds this year. Whether I just happen to be in the right place and time a lot this year or the population is rising remains to be seen. I have, however, noticed increased sightings which is "usually" an indicator of increased pop. but, without hard data its hard to say for sure. CNY -
I don't think baiting them will bring too many more in, like I said theres a lot on my land as there is and they are thought to be realtivley terratorial like wolves. I'm sure there are areas where a yote's home range overlaps with another since yote's can have up to a 10 mile home range. However in the off chance that it does attract more yote's it will just mean more for the killing. The reason I want to bait them is that we will also be hunting them with calls so I want to be able to switch things up and keep the yotes guessing so they don't pattern me lol. My neighbor will also be trapping them so hopefully in conjunction with all of these things we will be able to take a few of them out. I took one out opening morning of southern zone, so slowly we're chipping away at them untill deer season closes then we will be going at them full force. CNY

Fighting or Queer Deer? You decide.

What no deer sausage for you? lol sorry couldn't resist -
Not sure if this is the "real" story but the most likely is that they migrated east across the Mississippi and once they got a population established on this side it was all down hill from there. The ones in western ny and the southern tier came through ohio and pa, while the ones up north, more than likely migrated on the north side of the lakes and came down through the adks. Along the way they mated with wolves (eastern wolves not gray wolves) and sled dogs (northern migrants only). This also does give stock to the notion that eastern yotes are bigger because, well....they are lol. While the coyotes from western ny have "some" domesticated dog in thier blood, there is not the presences of wolf dna. The coyotes found in cny and north do show "up to" 30% of wolf blood in them. This makes the case for two migration paths rather than being stocked here by the insurrance companies lol. Like I said not sure if its the real story but the most likely one anyways....lol I had a couple links to stick in here where I had read all this info previously but can't find it I'm gonna do some searching and see if I can find the journal article that I read. They were from the Northeast Naturalist I believe. CNY
