  1. Im preparing too.... gotta fill the freezer with venison lol CNY
  2. There are a number of "theories" for planning the rut. I personally don't put much stock into the moon theory. I'm more based on the photoperiod "theory", again it is still a "theory", but one that I personally put more belief into due to personal success during this time. According to the photoperiod line of thought the peak of the rut (chasing, seeking, what ever you want to call it) happens on Nov. 9 every year plus or minus a day depending on leap years. I personally can't wait untill Halloween rolls around I always seem to have the best luck on Halloween or shortly there after. I'm not sure whos equation it works better for, (guess it depends on the year). However thats when I would take my vacation, if i was limited to a small window (Oct. 31-Nov. 14). Hope this helps Good luck this year CNY
  3. I hear that txt messages get me in trouble all the time apparently my sarcasim doesn't travel well with out voice/facial expressions.... Got me into the horrible habit of throwing lol on the end of everything so people know im joking makes me feel like a teenage girl...lol SteveB and myself are on the same page here I would support a primitive season with Flintlock/Fussil only once primers are introduced 11's or 209's I would not support it in the early season... just my line in the sand CNY
  4. Sorry my fingers get ahead of my brain and I didn't finish my response and posted it anyways lol. I would support a truly traditional season (no inlines, or capguns). I saw mention of capguns being considered traditional? Whats the thinking about that? I usually think of a traditional muzzle loader as one with a flint?? CNY
  5. I agree keep it the way it is now I like the snow and what it means for late ML season COLD and the deer are hitting the food
  6. Hey Newbreed, Is that a IR4 camera? If so I got the same one great camera but lately I've been having problems with white out pics. Have you seen anything similar with yours? I think I'm going to create a thread but just saw your pictures and it reminded me lol.... Got some dandy's there too i might add good luck this season hopefully will see some hard horned pics with you behind him. CNY
  7. Hey ny, you ever run out of space and looking for some more coyotes to run let me know we got way to many and we can't seem to put a significant dent on them.
  8. Its funny that you mention making a god awful racket when in the woods. I had this same converstaion with my Father-inlaw this past season. My brother-inlaw and I made a run into town to buy a set of rattlers (he didn't have any). On our return his father started in on us on how making all that noise in the woods completley goes against everything that he was ever taught. I agreed that making noise in the woods does go against a lot of traditional ways of hunting, but to give it a try none of us had put a tag on anything yet what did he have to lose. I handed him my horns and told him to try them, while myself and my brother-inlaw went for our evening sit (he was filming me). I ended up shooting a doe and passing a few small bucks (all rattled in). When we got home with her i asked him for the 411, did he see anything, how many, etc. you guys know the drill. To my surprise a big smile came over his face and he informed my that I can't have my horns back lol.... He said he tried it out about 30 mins after getting into the stand and had a big mature 8 pter come charging right in to his rattling. After the buck wondered off he tried again, and he came right back he rattled this buck in a total of three times but couldn't close the deal on him... thats hunting tho. CNY
  9. I sit until I see a deer coming then I usually stand and get ready for the shot. Unless there is no need for me to with the path the deer is taking. CNY
  10. No. Tried it for a while a number of years ago without any luck. Got tired of the antlers stabbing me in the back thru my backpack so I gave them up! Of course some people will tell you that it worked for them, but I'm sure they will never know just how many deer they scared off by rattling either! Well I'm one of those guys it worked for...lol and granted it may and probably does scare deer away but if used the right time of year and in the right situatuion and there is a big boy in the area he'll come running. I've also rattled in doe's and small bucks and by small I mean spikes and button bucks lol. So in my opion it works thats just my .02 cents though some guys don't like them, but I do know one thing you won't catch me in the woods in early november without my horns. CNY
  11. Now that looks like fun how many dogs do you guys run? Very cool looking black/ melanistic phase coyote CNY
  12. Couldn't agree more how hard is it to answer a few simple questions along with the others that you already have to answer on what your buying and which dmu your getting your dmp's in etc.
  13. As long as the obediance is good inside and thier are no control issues start them outside and on live birds as soon as possible. Your can't have a bird dog with out birds!!!! Now don't just take him out and throw a live bird in front of him. Start with a dead frozen bird and then a thawed one and then so on and so forth. Make sure your reading your dog and how he's reacting to these things. If he is hesitent trasitioning from a harnessed bird to a flapper go back to the harnessed bird until he's ready for a flapper. Basically use common sense don't rush things and you'll have a great dog. Good luck and keep us posted CNY
  14. Windex really?? Mixed in with the soapy water or run it through on a patch after intial cleaning?
  15. I think we need to bring back the Woodshed for the hot button issues keep the bickering out of the other forums
  16. I'm gonna be using triple 7 trying to get the best match of charge and projectile for my gun. Did some tinkering the other day when i bought it I think I'm going to start with about 80 grains and then go from there. Triple 7 is water clean up correct?
  17. Can't believe this hasn't been said yet "Don't pass something on the first day that you would shoot on the last" - Hunter Proverb lol. I personally won't shoot a buck unless its at least 2.5 my personal choice to each his own but if I see a nice 2.5 walk past on the first day he'll get an arrow sent to him express air mail. Won't be waiting around for a bigger one unless I'm hunting a specific buck based off of scouting. my $.02 CNY

    Practice

Great minds think alike identical to what I do. CNY
  19. I guess that depends on what you mean? Are you asking at what age do you want to make to trasition from inside to outside? Or are you asking at what age should you start training on live birds and such?
  20. Thanks again guys looks like no bore butter for this guy. I'll just stick to my water and rem oil like I've been doing. Thanks again for all your help CNY
  21. Another thing that you could try if you continue to have problems is ripping down a piece of plywood to the ladder width. Then put it on hinges and put a lock set on the opposite side. So you can lock the wood down to the ladder when your not there and then just unlock and swing open when its time to use. CNY
  22. haha shoot around corners... that might work out for you, that way you don't need to move around to the side of the tree your sitting next to just shoot around it lol. Or if the deer is behind a tree maybe the bullet will curve around the tree like in the movies lol... CNY
  23. Ha thats a funny pic. Hope you had a long zoom for that pic lol wouldn't want to become the handout lol
  24. Another way to help "age" a bear is the mickey mouse look. If a bear has a small face a big ears like mickey he's most likely a younger bear. If he's got a great big head an small ears he's probably a big bear. For me any bear that's alone and of decent size would probably get some lead/arrows flying at it lol. hope this helps CNY
