  1. Same thing around here scrapes are geting opened and seeing lots of flat heads and lil guys but no bigguns yet. We did pick up a road kill doe saturday that was being harrassed by a 6pt lying on the side of the road and he was trying to get at her!!! So I will def be in the woods as much as possible now. Especially since its cooled down a lot. Good luck CNY
  2. Steve, wouldn't you exhaust every option to find a deer you wounded? You have that responsability as an ethical hunter imo regardless if it were a trophy of that caliber or not. Now, granted we all don't have the dough to toss around to rent a chopper. However, if I had wounded a deer like that and couldn't find it you better believe I would be calling NASA in to find it jk. Seriously though, where would you draw the line if you wounded a deer and couldn't find it?
  3. So what it's legal there, if it were legal here there would be a lot more deer falling next to apple piles then there already is. Shooting three 200 inch deer with archery equipment (crossbow or not) requires more then dumb luck especially when two of them were two years in a row. Bait or no bait that is impressive imo....but maybe not yours? However I did notice that the score was referred to in SCI terms I thought those were only used inside game farms? Then again idk any game farms that have CRP or that are within City limits? But i've been known to be wrong before lol. CNY
  4. It varies for me depending on the season and where I happen to be on that particular weekend. I am always home for opener of bow and gun to hunt with my dad. Then the last weekend of mzl I'm always in the catskills with some buddies. The rest of the time is split up between my place and the Inlaws out in western NY. When I'm out there I hunt with her family and her brothers friends. When I'm home I hunt with my family and friends, along with friends of friends where ever I can get in the woods lol. CNY
  5. Turkey with traditional congrats
  6. I was talking to the hunter which in hindsite could be the reason... didn't want me invading his territory or something idk I have enough land to hunt. I was serious about trying to help with the hogs but if they don't want it they don't get it lol. I've heard tell that there is some state land nearby that holds them so I'm gonna check there this winter.
  7. Don't be so sure about that, I know a few of the guys who deer hunt on those properties that you speak of. I got a email of a picture last winter of a boar that was shot down there. I replied that it was very cool yada yada yada ... and offered my services if they were ever needed for dispatching hogs. I recieved a rather short and to the point response that the landowners in the area were very particular and only allowed a select number of people hunt on thier land. This was due to an influx of tresspassers once word got out that there were hogs in the area. A few bad apples ruin it for the bunch, I hear the same story to many times every season seems like people lack of respect is making it harder for honest people to gain permission. CNY
  8. Leaves dropping makes things louder, with out them as a buffer sound travels farther and louder. Add this to what he said
  9. I've been using it as sort of a cover to my cover scent if that makes sense lol. I have fresh earth cover scent and then when I climb up the tree I spray some doe estrus down wind to try and mask any remaining human scent. I also made some mock scrapes which got imediate responses... I didn't see the buck visit it but he ripped mine apart and then made one right next to it. Then he made one about 20 yards farther down the trail, so I freshened mine and both of his up and then made another one about another 50 yards up the trail 30 yards from my treestand. Hopefully this will piss him off enough to come out during daylight. CNY
  10. If I have 5 tags to legally kill deer with and I kill 5 deer I am now a game hog? Why not just a better hunter than your average weekend warrior who kills there 1 deer a yr and spends the rest of the yr in front of the TV bitching about me killing all the deer instead of getting off his fat arse and getting into the woods and making his own luck. I always find it funny how the better hunters are always berated and called game hogs because other hunters have no idea how to hunt or are to stubborn to move to another area. Here here we kill a good number of deer every year the majority of them being doe's and every year it seems that there is more than before. As long as I got tags for them (and thier 2.5 for a buck) I'm shooting. I'm out of venison we eat a lot of it, ate 5 last year. I gave a few away last year because I thought 5 would be enough guess I was wrong lol. I forgot to add if by some chance things do change to only one buck I would not be opposed of it, just another way to protect bucks. As of right now though if I can I'll shoot two bucks this year. CNY
  11. Yup I usually get a deer on or day before or after halloween.... and Nov. 9
  12. Thats what I love about hunting its the "work" after the shot and spending it with friends and family
  13. Well since thier are not enough success stories I'll share one that happend on my farm this past weekend. A friend of mine that I have been hunting with since the begining of our hunting carrers recently started bowhunting. He text me sunday night and said I need help tracking a deer. I was pumped for him it was his first deer with a bow and his first buck ever. So I replied with a laundry list of questions lol, where are you? Where did you hit it? Did the deer run or walk away? Which direction was he headed? ...etc. After I grilled him like a FBI agent I determined that it was most likely a gut shot and to wait it out and told him to sneak out of the woods as quitely as possible and that we would go back in 4 hours. So the hunt was on starting at 10:00 pm we looked for about an hour, had very little blood with only a pin prick every 30 yards. After going about 100 yards I called the search for the night and decided to take it back up in the morn. After looking for awhile the next morning we called it and took a break to eat lunch. He had to run into work quick and do a few things & pick up his dad. So once he got back with his dad the both of them went out and found it within 10 minutes not 20 yards from where we lost blood the last time. The goldenrod was just so thick that we couldn't see him I walked right past him at least two times. So the morale of the story is take your time and if you lost the blood go back to the last spot and start doing circles getting a little bit bigger every time. Good Luck CNY
  14. In seven years I've gotten 20 deer and the first 5 of those years I didn't bow or mzl
  15. I wouldnt mind letting him go one more year if it was my land and I could keep the one other guy that hunts it off... Then I would let him walk. I had one a little smaller last year and wanted him to grow one more year and he shot him. so its up in the air yet. Ya I hear ya there I'm slowly but surely getting it through to my friends, family, and neighbors that they won't be big if you don't let them grow... It wouldn't bother me if they were truly happy with the deer they shoot but they shoot lil bucks and then complian theres not big ones go figure. Well enough rambling good luck if you do decide to take him CNY
  16. Ahhh I see I was under the impression that it was only a few days ago lol
  17. I figure I got enough to keep me busy puttering around getting all the last little details set that i might as well stay up and do them so I'll sleep better tomorrow (I still won't sleep tomorrow but o well ).
  18. Putting a new sight on this close to the opener....ballys man, but as long as shes shooting good for you then i guess you made out. I never like to mess with equipment this close to the season unless its an absolute must.
  19. got two stands at 100% one at 80% and another ready to be put up based upon fresh sign and observed movements. With a wide array of ground blinds and old perm. farm stands only think left to do is laundry and get the backpack ready. I'll probably be sharpening my knife and getting the barn ready for some deer to be hanging in there. Just got a new (old) fridge to put in the barn to age deer if its gonna be warmer. Going to take all the racks out of it and put a bar arcoss the top to hang the quarters from. Even though I'll never be fully ready I got enough done so I can hunt lol. One more day .......... staying up late tonight so i'll sleep tomorrow night lol... like a little kid at christmas and it never gets old Good luck CNY
  20. I would stick to fawn bleats for now, like WNY said they aren't really making those noises now. I had a can and had decent success with it, I would say a regualr grunt tube/ doe bleat that has a variable o-ring work better imo. just my .02 good luck P.S. I'll grunt a little bit but only if i see a buck and even then i'll probably bleat at him first.
  21. Very cool indeed... How long till theres a season lol would be great to shoot some moose in NY, hopefully one day .
  22. Agree with the 2.5, Ya gonna take him this year or try and let him go another year?
  23. Should be able to get in with out them hearing ya, then ya just gotta make sure you don't get blown out of a tree lol.
