The title says it all, for me it's my Camillus Marine Combat Knife. That thing is as tough as it comes, very similar to the Kabar but a little longer and the blade is a little wider. I've used it to cut down saplings, skin deer, dig holes, there's no job it won't do. I don't feel prepared in the woods without it. So what is the one thing you won't go out without?

There's a real estate firm called Christmas and Associates, they specialize in selling hunting land with camps in NYS. www.landandcamps.com is their website.

How do you know? Have you ever been a deer? lol

nyantler, it can be valuable to be reminded of just what it is we're doing in the woods. I think sometimes we look at it as a game, we put crosshairs on it and pull the trigger, find it in an hour and it's dead. But to watch the life drain out of an animal reminded me the gravity of what I try to do in the woods and what's necessary for me to eat the food I like. I was just a dumb 16 YO kid at the time and it's not something I see myself doing again out of safety concerns but I do think it was a valuable experience in terms of not taking too lightly what we do. Again, just my opinion.

Let's face it hunting IS meant to be as efficient as possible and anytime we can dispatch an animal quickly we certainly should, but that's not always reality. Reality is that sometimes bad shots happen and we come on wounded deer in the final stages of death. It's hard to watch and a sobering experience but I think it can be valuable without being preferable. To say that watching an animal die, or doing it in close proximity has nothing valuable to offer a person is just untrue IMO.

Nearly did it this bow season. Came up on my deer thinking it was dead and it started kicking some more and couldn't get up. I had my knife in my hand but decided that I didn't want to take the antlers to the face or get kicked with those sharp hooves so I put another arrow in him and listened to him drown in his own blood. A few years back my uncle made me do it to a deer he had spine hit. If watching another animal die from only a few feet away doesn't bother you may want to make an appointment with a mental health professional and be checked out. I'd do it again rather than back out and wait but killing with your own hands if a lot different than pulling a trigger.

Looks like a NY tag to me

How about the guy today that got within 50 yards and looked at me using his rifle scope rather than binoculars, then had the nerve to sit down and hunt. I was ready to kill him and yelled (literally yelled, who cares about deer at this point) right in his face asking just what the hell he thought he was doing. He said he thought he was far enough away from me. He didn't even realize the major problem with this whole situation.

Any good places to get sausage made around Niagara County?
Caveman replied to Jeremy_K's topic in Deer Processing
I would imagine Hanzlian's takes pre-quartered deer. I would give them a call first though.(716) 891-5247. Probably too late for this deer but maybe for future reference. -

Hanzlian's on genesee near Pine Ridge in Buffalo. Not quite Niagara County but his sausage is unmatched (that came out wrong). $1.50/lb -

I got this six pointer in East Otto state forest within an hour and a half of sitting down a few weeks ago. -

Got an interview for a new job on Monday. Wish me luck.

Don't laugh, last year I went out hunting and fell asleep against a tree. When I woke up it was 2 and a half hours later, I was covered in an inch of fresh snow, and there were fresh tracks 5 feet away from me lol

I'd see if Rick Perry has any ideas for a camp name lol -
There are guys here will probably be pissed that you posted this in the bowhunting section lol

Just my luck, it pours on my four days off from work, and then clears up for my four days on

I wonder if you brought some with you hunting (to drink) and "accidentally" dropped your thermos spilling it all at the base of your tree maybe the deer might be more inclined to come by your stand. All of this an accident of course.

I don't pay much attention to the rivalry anymore. All I care about is when I was playing senior year we whooped Lancaster and won the section lol...no wonder G-man is bitter
-
I can't stand when I get skunked squirrel hunting and one of my urbanite friends says "how hard could it be to hunt squirrels....they're everywhere and they run right up to you"
-
Funny part I actually went to Depew. C'mon let's build bridges...peace can start with you letting me kill your deer LOL
-
I grew up in Cheektowaga not too far from Lancaster, how about letting me come stick a doe? lol

I was planning on going out this morning but when I checked the weather and say rain all day in East Otto I went back to bed. Even if the deer do move, I don't want to wound an animal and have the blood trail washed away by the rain. I filled a tag tuesday and it's a month long season, no need to panic just yet.

Do you need a pistol permit to own a black powder pistol in NY?
-
...you gripe about having to be up at 7 to be at work by 9 yet have no problem getting up at 4 to go hunting
