I disagree, having to work for big deer and fish is the best part of the Adirondacks, the 21" brook trout on my wall is a great memory including carrying a canoe 7 miles to catch him. The racks and mounts are made all the more special by the insane drags/carry's out of the remote destinations. Knowing that when I'm miles in that I am truly alone is my favorite part of big woods hunting that would be ruined my making these spots more accessible. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Big game packrifle do they make them anymore ?
Buckmaster7600 replied to Hunter007's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I do exactly what you're talking about and have tried a bunch of different options and have settled on the fact that you can't have your cake and eat it. A short light rifle with a good pack frame is the best that I have found. I can't remember what brand my pack frame is but its all carbon and weighs less than 3lb and has a lid capacity of 150lbs. Super light rifles in 30-06 aren't fun to shoot! I have a 30-06 tikka T3 with a 16" barrel and a leupold 1-6 Vx6 that is a hair over 6lbs loaded and it's about 36" long overall length. On the frame the gun is below my head so doesn't get caught on anything while walking. I have packed out a lot of deer from miles in with the rifle and meat on the pack and it works better than anything else I have found. I have a BLR takedown in 358winchester and it shoots ok but is too heavy for my needs. A cva scout takedown could be a viable option especially with the barrel cut down but big woods hunting and a single shot don't really work for me because shot selection is often so limited that a quick follow up is often needed. any hunting stuff on the xmas wish list??
Buckmaster7600 replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in General Chit Chat
I buy stuff as I need it so Xmas lists aren't a big deal to me. I bought a new Ion ice auger on Black Friday. I think a ravin R15 is going to be finding its way into the stable before too long. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
1 is on timber property and the other is privately owned. The camp that is on timber property is a public seasonal road. The last thing I want is for there to the more roads opened to public in the Adirondacks it will turn into Maine and anyone that has hunted the big woods in Maine knows what I'm talking about. From lake George to tupper lake to town of inlet. I have a camp in speculator and belong to a camp in blue mtn lake that I use as base camps. I have hunted the Adirondacks for about 16 yrs and I have probably spent a total of 1 hr sitting and that includes taking dumps. Killed 11 bucks up there with 9 being 3+yrs old and I missed 3 seasons while deployed over seas. Trying to find killable deer is the hardest part of hunting big woods. There are deer in spots that are nearly impossible to kill unless there is snow so I don't waste my time in those areas. There is a lot of land, doesn't make sense to waste time in unproductive areas. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

My truck looks the same all year, my truck is only used for truck purposes so on the very rare time I have more than myself in it its a 10 minute job making room for another person. Once a year I clean it out and pay the 75$ to have it "detailed" I tip well because they're doing way more than 75$ worth of work just getting the mud of the floors! Sounds like the sinking ship is getting more holes.

You don't want a new one, if that's what you want I would look for an older model. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Skipping deer hunting this morning to try and pile up some crows, they have been dying pretty regular over a farm I can hunt. Hoping to brea the 100 mark! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I worry way more about "clearing" 2" of clothing than I do what mature bucks think of my piss. I'm sure if you hunted the same stand every day eventually the buck would be able to figure it out but someone like me who might hunt a stand 3 times in a year I have killed plenty a mature bucks with my wiz at the bottom of my tree. Maybe bucks just like the smell of my piss mixed with chew spit and it makes an attractant? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There are factors to the bear take other than bear numbers. The 10's of thousands of acres that were leased land that are now conservancy land where people could ride their quads now they can't. Most everyone I know isn't willing to drag or quarter and carry out a bear any real distance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

With the booming guns sales over the last 15 years it doesn't sound good for Remington. I know I haven't bough a new Remington in over 10 years until this year when they made a special run that I had to have. I think the days of nearly everyone's first shotgun being a 870 are gone forever. https://www.google.com/amp/beatricedailysun.com/sports/local/remington-arms-may-be-in-big-trouble/article_f227ea4a-e506-5dd7-a25b-3da42c3d7cf8.amp.html Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Checked a trail cam on my way out back for the first time since October 3rd, not a single buck I would shoot. This is the most exciting pic I got. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

How much do you shoot your deer rifle/shotguns
Buckmaster7600 replied to Buckmaster7600's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Everything from 35whelen-357mag. Most of it is with my 35whelen Remington 7600 with plinking loads with 110gn cast lead bullets. I reload, cast my own bullets and have a range in my back yard. It makes shooting pretty inexpensive. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
What about a longer season for deer on state land only
Buckmaster7600 replied to Hunter007's topic in Deer Hunting
Making season longer would only make that worse because everyone that hunts private land and still has a tag would be out on public land. If you go a week without seeing a deer you're in the wrong spot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I understand your point but I disagree, hunting isn't something where everyone should get a trophy. Big woods hunting isn't little league baseball. In my opinion the biggest decline with ADK hunting is the tree stand and food plot generation that has taken over hunting these days. Sitting is not an effective way of consistently killing bucks in the big woods, Todd Mead is one of the few hunters that I know of that consistently kill them while sitting but he puts in hundreds of miles on his feet in the off season to find the areas in the offseason. There are 2 MILLION acres of public land in the Adirondacks. As someone who has been hunting in the Adirondacks since I was a little kid I will say that those that hunt the dacks and don't see deer either suck at hunting or aren't willing to find the right areas. Bucks in the dacks don't come easy they must be earned. This year I have only had 6 days to hunt the adk's and saw 7 different bucks. It is common for me to leave my camp at 2am and drive 50-100 miles to find the right conditions, those of us that consistently kill mature bucks in the ADK's do it by being mobile and finding deer not walking up the same hill behind camp and sitting. In October and November It's common for me to put 8-12 miles a day on the gps and a few hrs in the truck to find the deer I'm going to hunt in late November. This is the first year in the last 5 that I won't kill a mature buck in the dacks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I like it the way it is, if you're not seeing deer there is millions of other acres to try. Logging would help however the state would F*CK it up and end up costing us money. The only way the state would allow it to happen would be to fly the logs out, not only is it not cost effective but they also will leave all the tops in the woods instead of cleaning the mess. The property I own in SZ doesn't have doe permits even for landowners yet between yesterday and today I have heard over 40 shots. It doesn't seem possible, I know from talking to neighbors that many of them get doe permits for the neighboring wmu and fill them here but it is still hard to fathom all the shooting.
