  2. Went and picked it up today. Mounted a scope I had laying around vx3 2.5-8, it will have a different scope before season not sure what yet. Set a target in the back yard and got her close using factory Hornady 250gn ftx's. Claimed velocity is 2200, shot 5 over the Chrono "2179,2186,2190,2181and 2176. I'm pretty happy with those numbers with a 16" barrel. Trigger was your typical Ruger American trigger, I hate them but I knew what I was getting. Breaks clean and measured 3lbs 4oz I just can't warm up to their version of the "accu trigger" it will be replaced by something else. Bolt was also your typical American bolt, rough but functioned perfectly. The stock is plastic and like most plastic stocks it flexes and you have to be mindful of it when shooting from a sand bag but fit and finish looks good other than a little stock contact on the left side of barrel. It will shoot. 100yds 3 shots from a sand bag 100yds 5 shots free hand firing as fast as I could work the bolt and reload. 200yds 3 shots from sand bag, 15mph cross wind. Overall I am very pleased with it for now it has a home in the safe. I am excited to work up some hand loads for it. The factory stuff shot plenty good enough but I like Barnes bullets and I'm hoping I can get them a couple hundred fps faster and shoot as well as these did. The recoil was much less than I expected from a 6lb gun shooting that heavy of a bullet. I would say the recoil was compatible to a 8lb 7mm-08.
  3. I probably average 2 or 3 gun purchases a month, it's hard to hide them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. It's in but I also had ammo shipped there as well should be there today if so we will know tomorrow! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Good for you! I am a very cool minded quiet guy myself but more than once I have had to call and asshole an out for being an asshole. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Ok, how about training wheels on a bike? Learning fundamentals in a safer "easier" environment. I still remember my daughters first time she figured out how to ride a bike with training wheels she was so excited, then her first time she was able to ride without them was an awesome experience for both of us. There is nothing wrong with Teaching a kid how to do something under a more controlled environment. I taught her how to shoot when she was 3 using a 22 if I would have handed her my 35whelen and let her shoot it she wouldn't ever want to do it again, was that too easy on her? I taught her how to catch a ball using a foam ball, should I have used a softball? I taught her to shoot a basket ball with a little plastic hoop, should I have made her learn on a 10ft hoop? I taught her how to ride a wheeler on a Honda 50, should I have sat her on my 250R and let her go? The list could go on forever. It isn't about giving them an easy reward it's about instilling knowledge and experience that we hope they will use for the rest of their lives and hopefully pass on to their kids. 7. Sorry for your loss, sounds like she had a good run! We can all only hope to make it to 87 with our minds and mobility. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Do your kids play little league if so why are you taking it easy on them and not putting them in the pros? Why are they taking "X" grade classes and not college level courses if so why are you giving them the easy way out? Your argument asinine. I am the parent of a 9yr old girl who does more house work and chores than most of my friends wives. She mows lawns with me and runs a 60" zero turn pro mower better than most adults, she has worked for nearly everything she has and will continue to do so. I am with you on the "now now now something for nothing" generations but this is simply not the case with youth season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Maybe that's the problem with the school system? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. No skeeters out here Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. I have more damn guns than I know what to do with and I still hunt with a 308 some times. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. 243 and 270 will kill a bear just as dead as the rest. My main reason for choosing 308 is because of ammo availability. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Finally have a minute so I'll tell the mornings story. Hunted until 6:30 on my property down the road from my house and not a gobble so I walked home and headed out to the field a few hundred yards behind my house. From the top of the hill I could see him strutting with 2 hens out in my green field on the other side of the ravine. I watched for a minute and for whatever reason they went from feeding to walking towards the NW corner of the field. Knowing I didn't have much time I took of running to try to cut them off, got around the corner of the field took a knee tucked in the bushes and waited a couple minutes and they never showed up and I could only see 25yds because I was in the low spot. Slowly stood up and could see him 80yds from me still strutting now with 3 hens. They weren't heading my way any more so I got back in the ditch and worked my way towards them as far as I could. Slowly stood up and he was in the same spot but now 60yds away so I watched them for 5 minutes and could tell they weren't in a hurry to go anywhere. The grass was 6-10" tall so I knew it would be nearly impossible but it didn't look like they were coming my way so I started after them on my belly only moving a little at a time dragging my body with my elbows when the wind blew. The problem was while I was crawling I couldn't see them so I just worked my way in their direction inches at a time. After what felt like forever I stopped and laid there for a couple minutes and pushed myself up as slow as possible and he was close, really close but I had both hands on the ground and the gun under me so no shot. Big gust of wind came and I laid back down and started trying to get my gun up and ready when I saw a turkeys leg then head feet from me it was a hen and she was just eating as I laid with my face buried in the ground. After pecking on my shotgun barrel she must have saw her deflection in my scope because she pecked at the lens a couple times and then turned away from me and that's when I made my move. Popped up to my knees and let him have it. He never twitched the 2 3/4" 6 shot heavy game load blew a hole through him. He was about 3 steps from me when I shot and 4 steps from me where he died. I think the concussion from the muzzle blast gave the hen that was closest to me a concussion because she stumbled around for a little bit before she was able to run away and there's no way I hit her. It was an awesome hunt done just the way I like it close quarters, no calls, no decoys, no blinds just me against them on their turf. This is the way I love to hunt and hope I can keep killing them like this for many more years. Now I have waisted enough days chasing these stupid birds back to fishing I go. Have fun everyone and good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Welcome, if I had to pick one it would be a 308. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. not really 1 1/8" Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. It wasn't pretty! That is the closest I have ever gotten to birds crawling up to them in a hay field. I had a hen peck at the lens of my scope Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. Wow that was one of the most gruesome stalks of my life. It has taken me 2hrs to go 50yds and I killed him at 8ft Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Been on the same bird all morning he's 60 yds from me and I have no way to get to him, your move pal. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I have only used it once because I don't like vests but I like the tenzing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Time will tell. I have loaded to 2350fps in my AR with a, we will call it "short" for legality reasons barrel and with the American being a bolt I should be able to seat the bullet out a bit further allowing more powder. You just have to load for the short barrel with pistol powders "h110/w296 etc" I think I will be be able to reach 2400 without much trouble. If I'm wrong and only get to @2300fps with 270gn's it's still an honest 200yd gun and I don't think the deer will complain. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Sneak up and go get them! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. I told my wife I wouldn't buy a new gun this month and I lied. Ruger made a limited run of Left Hand American Ranch rifles with a 16" barrel Chambered in 450 bushmaster. I already have an AR in 450 and it's a fun fun but is heavy and I don't like carrying it. This little gun only weight 5.5lbs and is only 36" long. It should make a great big woods rifle and the 450 is legal for Ohio. I can't wait for it to get here so I can start playing. I found 5 boxes of ammo today at local shops so I'll have plenty of brass to get started loading for it, dies are on the way. The nice part about the 450 is it will use the same .451 bullets I load in my 45 colts and 454 casull as well as my muzzleloader. I'm hoping to get the Barnes 275gn out the barrel around 2400fps. This would be right on par with similar 45-70 loads and make it an honest 250yd gun. I'm going to top it with a vx3 1-5. It should be here early next week, I'll try and do a review on here. 23. Most gobbling I have heard after fly down by far, none too close but sounds like a couple are getting closer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Well let's see if I still have it. My daughter has been begging me to bring her out with me so yesterday I set up a blind for us let's see if i can remember how to call and sit still. I think she is better about sitting still than I am, I have saw birds in this field 4 out of the last 5 days so I have a good feeling. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. Rail road ties going lengths ways of our 2 holer, been that way for 10 years now. No support down in the hole. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
