  1. All valid points on tracking but there is not a more efficient way of killing mature bucks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Couldn't agree more! The "Spot" you and Moog have definitely produces! Out here on the opposite end of the state those spots are rare to non existent. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. I haven't read all the responses so I don't know if it's been said but one of the biggest things about killing a mature buck is Capitalizing! There are a lot more story's about seeing a mature buck than there are about killing them. You won't get many chances so you better have you crap together when you do. I see some are saying time in the woods and I somewhat agree but time in the woods is a lot like practice. Everyone always says you have to practice more, well there is such a thing as bad practice just as there is wasting time in the woods. If you only have "X" amount of days to hunt pick them wisely. When I was in the service I usually had about 7 days to take off for hunting season other than the 3 years I was deployed out of the 5 years I was able to come up for season I killed 3 mature Adirondack bucks and one in New Hampshire "there wasn't the conditions I wanted in NY so went where they had snow." Back then I wasn't hunting a deer I was hunting conditions. All 3 of those ADK bucks came from different counties. If you're serious about consistently killing mature bucks you can't have a "spot" you have to be mobile and willing to find them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I would love to know what info they used to determine what dwu's are included or not? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. Decoys can make and break you. In a field they tend to work more than not in the woods they aren't needed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. 4 1/2, i agree that the first hunt is the best one. I hunt the Adirondacks the wmu I hunt has the 2nd lowest deer population in the state. I rarely hunt my home farm. I am a tracker I wait until snow, cover ground until I find a track worth hunting then try to kill that buck sometimes that day sometimes a couple days later but after following a deer for a few miles he can teach you a lot about him if you listen. 8. I don't sit in stands or anywhere for that matter so I'm not much help there. The biggest thing about killing a mature buck is hunting areas where mature bucks are. With New Yorks seasons the way they currently are there is simply not a lot of mature bucks out there. There isn't one on every 20acre parcel. Where I live in the southern edge of northern zone there are very very few mature bucks. Where I hunt in the Adirondacks there are also very few mature bucks but the ones there are killable. 9. I don't use cams during season, I use cams purely for entertainment and security. I would hunt just like I do now use bow/early Muzz. season to find the spot where I'll kill my buck within a few days of nov15. Not a whole lot to killing a buck just have to be in a spot where they want to be. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. For those that say hunting is a sport what do you consider war? In the end the goal is the same. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. I'll shoot black powder 3 or 4f depending on what it likes, I hope to be able to use 1 powder for pan and main charge. Bullets I'm hoping to cast my own conicals if it will shoot them if not I'll just use round balls. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. You should! I Have killed bucks with almost every legal weapon other than Trad archery "killed a doe with a recurve" and a flintlock I guess it's the last of a long line of tools. I guess the old saying of going full circle is true, the Xbow made me want to shoot Trad and I have hunted and killed deer with every firearm from rifles to pistols and the fastest wizbang magnums to pistol cartridge carbines. I am someone that always looks for a challenge and I guess this is just the next progression. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Now that's a man purse! I have a muzzleloader pouch I carry now that I should be able to fit everything in. How accurate was yours? Max range 50yds or so? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. I'll be using both up north. I really want to kill an ADK buck with the longbow but the flintlock would be awesome as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Not yet, I'm shooting my Samick so well I haven't really been looking. Most likely it will be an Omega. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. That's funny, those two totally suck! Who in the hell needs 2 minutes to try to get "steady?" Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. This may work for some but I have shot more mature bucks that I saw for the first time the day I killed him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. My commitment to killing a buck this year with my longbow has sparked a new interest. I know have a Flintlock on the way. If I can get it shooting acceptably I will use it for the entire season "excluding crappy weather." I am having so much fun with the longbow and can't wait to stick a wood chicken with it in a couple months that I think the Flintlock will add to the fun of the regular season and muzzleloader season. Anyone on here have any advice on where to start with the flintlock? It's a 50cal left hand Lyman deerstalker, the carbine of flintlocks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I don't think hunting is a sport. To me hunting is a game. No different than poker or monopoly. You can do everything you can to set yourself up but the opponent still has the final say in the outcome. I don't think anyone should say that taking a life is a "sport." Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Get away from people. The further you go in the better your chances. The last 3 years I have killed bucks that were aged at over 5 1/2 and the closest to the road was 1 1/2 mile from a dead end me dirt road that is over 10miles of the paved road. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. I fight with our locals every year. I have caught their dogs a bunch of times and they are pissed when I call them and tell them to come get them. I have hundreds of trail cam pic of the hounds chasing deer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. back when I called turkeys I learned from listening to my dad and he only used diaphragms. He was the best I have ever heard at it and I was never even close to as good as him but the birds didn't seem to mind. Cadence is more important than tone. Learn how turkeys talk and do it In your own "voice" and the birds will come. As for grow's suggestion the only call I can do with my own voice is a "put put" immediately followed by a load boom. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. I'll be totally honest the first ADK buck I get within bow range to with the longbow is in trouble, well I hope he is in trouble. Bow hunting the ADKS is how I kill bucks in November. I just cover a ton of ground and hope to stumble on a buck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Shooting an Adirondack buck in his bed with my bow was by far my greatest hunting accomplishment of my life. I will likely spend the rest of my life trying to shoot another 3 1/2yr old buck with my longbow in the big woods. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. I'm not even talk low quality. I have yet to look through a scope that cost under 1k that was clear on 12x anything over 7xor 8x really starts to show imperfections. That being said I admit to have been spoiled while in the service and shoot Schmidt and benders that are some of the finest glass on earth. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
