  1. Military snipers shoot of rests or bipods, you are contradicting yourself when you talk about how a "longer heavy gun" is easier to hold steady than you use someone who only shoots from a supported position as an example. At ranges that I am willing to take an unsupported shot there is minimal difference in a light vs heavy gun if I was taking alot of 500 yd free hand shots I would use a different gun and a weighted shooting jacket with a loop sling but that would be about as practical as taking 500 yds standing shots at game.
  2. We are in the "big WOODS" section right? Most all of my shots when hunting the ADK's are under 150yds with the occasional 300yd.
  3. Do you do a lot of long range standing shooting at animals? Or kneeling for that matter? And in the prone with proper position you have bone support and weight make no difference.
  4. I have to disagree a short heavy barrel is the most consistent barrel. I can adjust for velocities but when shooting precision long range I want consistency.
  5. Yea exactly, I have never seen a 1 gun gun safe although it would not take up as much room as my 48.
  6. I couldn't imagine only having 1 gun. It would be way to hard to choose. It would be like having 1 hat or one pair of boots I just couldn't do it.
  7. Not a chance! A ballistic chart is a guideline that is it. Every gun is different some are faster than others. So if the ballistics on the box that use a 24" barrel and you happen to have a slow 22" barrel it's easy to be 100fps slower than claimed velocities. Do you know what 100fps variation does at 300yds? I know I am not the norm but I would consider my self a shooter that hunts not a hunter that shoots. I love shooting guns I have a 600yd range at my house and am usually shooting 4-5days a week and a bow range set up in my basement and I shoot my bow everyday most of the time twice a day. It's what I love to do. I understand that most don't have the ability to shoot like I do but I consider sighting a rifle in at 100 and shooting at a deer at 300 is irresponsible. You have an entire year to get ready for deer season if you can't fit 1 day into your life to shoot your gun at distances you intend to shoot you shouldn't be shooting at those distances. I'm not trying to sound like an a** hole just giving my opinion.
  8. Like I said above, if your sighted in at 50, 100, 150 etc. would you never take a shot at 43, 87, 126, 167 yards just because you've never shot that exact range? (if you can shoot at every range, 1 yard increment at a time, good for you). I know where I'm hitting at 47 yards, I know the velocity and bc of the bullet and the trajectory out to 200yds. I only trust the tables out to about 100. After spending 8 years in the Marine Corps 6.5 of them as a sniper. When I am shooting If my max range is 800meters I would shoot 0-800 in 100 meter increments I can do the math giving 2 known poi's but having 1 poi and reading about the other in a book and getting an imaginary poi for the other distance and basing Kentucky windage off that is absolutely ignorant. To be honest you will most likely be fine deer aren't hard to kill and have a large vital area. You asked a question got answers that didn't fit your "plans" and then criticized the people that took their time to help you, makes sense to me.
  9. Only 6 in the water the other is one I was changing bait on. Only 2 of us today so 6 is legal.
  10. I'm sorry for all that was lost I couldn't imagine.
  11. I carry my rifle for 99.99999% of the season and shoot it at a deer for .00001% of the time usually at moving deer so light and handy wins out for me every time. If I hunted out of a blind that I drove my truck to I would use different rifles but while wandering through the adk's for miles a day a short light rifle will be in my hands.
  12. did real well on lake trout salmon were tough but got these 2 and the steelhead.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. I would avoid the newer h&r's 44mags they are know to have very loose bores. The one I had I ended up ordering cast bullets in a .433 diameter to finally get it to shoot acceptable groups. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Hot weather today I decided to trade the tree stand for my boat. First time I can remember fishing this late into December and wearing a T-shirt. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. I want a 7600 in 44mag. That short stroke and minimal recoil would be a fast shooter. But it would most likely be like my 44carbines and I tend to shoot more times that I need to because you can shoot so fast with it.
  16. My first deer rifles were a 760 carbine 18.5"and a ruger compact 308 16.5" a few years after I bought a tikka and felt like the barrel got caught on everything so I did some reading and decided to make it a carbine with a hacksaw the first attempt failed that's why it now is 17ish inches but I have done a lot now and am pretty good at it. As far a velocities I have lost around 100fps with 18" tubes as to 22". The way I see it is my 30-06 minus 5 inches gets me to about 308 velocities 35 whelen to 358 winchester etc. I hear a lot of people talking about the muzzle blast and have never noticed it except in my 300wsm and that's not terrible either.
  17. I cut almost all my barrels before I ever shoot a gun so if it's bad I'm used to it but they have never bothered me. I have a 30-06 7600 and that has a 16.5" barrel on it is "jumpy" with recoil but never noticed a big "blast"
  18. A search on gun broker and there are hunters and scouts in 44 mag.
  19. I would never shoot at a deer at a range I have not shot at a target.
  20. I called my gun guy and he had it in 3 days this was right when they came out so I don't know about now, I don't know what your budget is but I also have the ruger 77/44 and that is a shooter as well with minimal recoil.
  21. I used to have a tent in the ADK's that was just over 5 mile hike from a dirt road and the next closest road was over 10 miles. I always had people ask to come hunt with me and other than my 3 buddies that I started it with we never brought anyone else out because we didn't want to be responsible for them.I certainly never carried a camera. But I have had one on my cell phone for a long time now so I have the ability to take pictures.
  22. I killed my buck this year with a tikka t3 in 30-06 with a 17" barrel I also have a t3 in 35whelen with an 18" barrel. My favorite big woods rifle would be my 7600's not as light as my Tikkas but they Cary a lot better and faster follow ups. All my big woods rifles have leupold vx2 compacts 3-9x33's. My favorite big woods cartridge would be either 35whelen or 358win. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
