  1. If they are kicking im still shooting just for that reason.
  2. Every time I have seen this its a high hit that shock the spinal cord and causes temporary paralysis.
  3. Usually the complaint of the SST is a lack of expansion not a lack of penetration. I would be willing to bet the bullet went through the shoulder blade or you didn't hit her where you think you did.
  4. The biggest doe I have shot in 15 years of hunting weighed 129 was aged at 5 1/2 I shot her in the old nz early 4 day season and she was dry "no fawn." I would have to assume that all of those facts add up to the best possible scenario for a heavy doe. I have since seen a lot of claimed 150-160lb does and mine dwarfed them.
  5. Shooting tight groups is not nearly as important as terminal performance. Shooting .5" group is great but if a bullet fails to retain the needed mass to penetrate a shoulder bone it is useless. 3000fps is fast having a bullet retain weight after impact with a major bone is no small feat.
  6. Blackhorn should eliminate your problem! It takes me less than 5 minutes to clean my gun now. My "newish" smoke pole has only ever shot blackhorn and a lot of it, into the 4th pound and the barrel looks brand new.
  7. What powder are you shooting?
  8. Thanks, shooting a rifle didn't take me as long as shooting bows. I hunted this year with a right handed bow and an eye patch due to a up coming rotator cuff surgery. It took way less time to re teach myself how to shoot right handed than it did to shoot "wrong" handed that's for sure.
  9. My first call was a ryobi 18volt radio and a 50ft audio cable with a headphone jack on each end hooked to an iPod. I killed a few dogs with it and it has cost me thousands because I am now an addict. Did it sound great no, but it did work in the dumb ones.
  10. Unles it's all you have, has sentimental value or you like the added challenge there is not a single benefit to slug gun over a rifle.
  11. For you guys whom like myself love to bow hunt and have a tough time getting into gun hunting try handgun hunting. Other than in the ADK's "where I don't think more of a challenge is needed" I only gun hunt with my pistol it's so much fun having to limit myself to 50yds and having another weapon that takes year round practise to become proficient with. I have only killed 1 doe in 3 years of trying with it so far and am having so much fun with it. It is very similar to when I first started bow hunting 15 years ago.
  12. Stick with this and you will never have a problem only difference is with a rifle you can shoot quartering too unlike a bow.
  13. I used Winchester silver tips for years with great success I now use barnes and have had excellent results with them as well. I'm sure some will argue but pushing a bullet at 3000fps is asking a lot that is why I have always preferred a premium bullet for a 270 as I want weight retention with such a light bullet.
  14. One of the best parts of NY is the diversity. Up where I am from I have never thought of it the way many on here do. It's a way of life up here and people are either part of it or used to it. I can imagine if someone from downstate had a deer hanging from a tree in their front yard it would draw some attention as it does up here just for different reasons when my neighbors go by and see a deer in my "deer tree" in the yard they often stop by to see it and talk about it, just as I do if they have one hanging.
  15. This! ???? don't like how others use PUBLIC LAND buy or lease land that you can control.
  16. There is one way and one way only for instant incapacitation that is a disruption of the central nervous system "CNS" this is can be obtained via a direct impact or hydrostatic shock. A high shoulder impact will most likely "drop" a deer but often requires a second shot or a little time for the animal to die. With a shot behind the shoulder to the vitals the animal will be dead very soon but may run a distance often determined by terrain.
  17. Dead deer don't go anywhere when jumped let it lay it will be there in the Am
  18. Haha you guys crack me up! Up here in the big woods Its very common to see them hanging out of trunks or on top of cars or on 4wheelers in the back of trucks. No one pays any attention unless it's big! Most all of us have meat poles in the front yard too.
  19. I loved that stuff until I hunted late season with it and got a "poof" instead of a bang. Did some testing during the winter after and had very bad results in the cold. I dumped the rest of the can out. It sure was clean shooting though.
  20. To each's own, drives are a very effective way to kill deer. I'm sure it sucks for them to do it near you. I am assuming it was public land and they have just as much right doing a drive as you do sitting in your stand.
  21. Why shoot at an apple when you can shoot at the whole pie? I hunt the ADK's and take shots many wouldn't but the neck is not my first choice.
