I have a waterproof cigarette pouch that has matches a compass and water tablets. It goes in my back pocket when I get out of the truck, unless hunting then I have the stuff I would need in my fanny pack. With that stuff and my pistol I feel like I could survive a lot longer than I would want to.

My best bow stand it 30yds off a road on a pole line with bedding areas on both sides of the road.

I shoot the ttsx in my 30-06 With a 17 inch barrel they expand, penetrate and leave big exits. With my short barrel you will have a higher mc than I do and should have no problem at all with expansion.

Semi auto shotgun suggestions
Buckmaster7600 replied to Woodjr55's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Franch affinity, it's my favorite shotgun I have ever owned. -
And you mostikely won't ever have an issue, but to the best of my knowledge a vehicle that can be titled does not fall into the 3 mile rule. That is what farm/ag plates are for.
-
As a farmer myself that truck is illegal that's what farm plates are for. And a UTV is a grey area because a UTV is the same as an atv if under 1000lbs and if over it really gets weird because they are unregisterable.Like many other things in NY it would be up to the LEO and the judge on how they read the law. In NY it is illegal to use an atv-UTV on a public road. U.S. farmers get away with a lot more because of our blanket insurance coverage.

It's the residents of glass houses that partake in stone throwing that bug me too Larry.

That's exactly how I feel about shooting after or before legal times. I'm glad we can agree on this grow. On a side note congrats on a very nice buck!

I can't believe you of all people would do something illegal and try to make it sound ok because everyone else is doing it.

You drive a UTV on a road?

Winchester vs Nosler Balistic Tip
Buckmaster7600 replied to Five Seasons's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
The 2 biggest positives to a solid bullet are -controlled expansion at a wide variety of velocities -weight retention With a solid bullet you don't have to depend on 2 or more types of metals staying connected during expansion "jacket separation" this is the main reason for the weight retention of a solid bullet. And you do not have to worry about hitting with enough force for the core to break open a jacket and not getting expansion. -

Winchester vs Nosler Balistic Tip

Not on your list but I have been extremely impressed with barnes bullets. Before I started shooting them I shot Winchester silver tips with great results. Accuracy should be second to terminal performance. -
I look at processing your own deer the same as I do handloading ammo. I do my own and I enjoy it. I don't have to worry about it being someone else's deer or if it was handled properly. Just like the ammo I build I know they were assembled properly or if not I know who to blame. It's another part of the whole hunting aspect that I love.

I can't say that I'm worried about them bolting but I have never seen a relaxed deer jump string. That's why I only try to stop them if they are running.
-
Congrats, that's awesome! My 8 year old is getting ready for Ohio next year I can't wait.

The town voted for the dump before I was able to vote so not much I can do about it but having an extra 450 acres to hunt makes the smell much more bearable. And I can only smell it during the summer when there is a south east wind.
-
There is a landfill that borders me it was owned by the county and is now private. The year they opened I was kicked off and after repeated attempts to gain acces and calls to dec about the smell I finally talked to the guy in charge and after explaining to him that until I can hunt it or he can contain the smell that I would continue calling in complaints, then he started seeing it my way. I now have sole access to 450 acres. ????

New hunting seat
Buckmaster7600 replied to MACHINIST's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I use the millennium tree seat and it's amazingly comfortable and super light @ less than 4 pounds and it's silent and fast to set up! -
If they are running yes I stop them or at least try. If they are just walking I will shoot them, I would rather shoot an oblivious walking deer than an alert stopped deer.
-
If your worried just shoot it, they taste like chicken!

Do any of you choose slug gun over rifle?
Buckmaster7600 replied to Billdogge's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Yea aside from 2-3 dollars per shell, unable to reload, long overall length and limited range. If it was shotgun only I would consider one but I'll stick with rifles, shotguns are for the birds. -

I noticed that too, but it seemed like the shotguns were rarely 1 shot more like 3-5 but usually only 1 rifle "crack" at a time. -
A Handy Skinning Tool
Buckmaster7600 replied to fasteddie's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
We hang all our deer in a pole barn with a electric winch. A couple years ago I put an anchor in he floor so now to skin I use the golf ball trick and hook it to the anchor in the floor lift the dear, hide come off while I'm lifting. It takes longer to tie the knot around the ball than it does to take the hide off. -
This is so true I love it when guys at work run up to me to show me their kills and they always weigh around 180 and I always ask "oh you have a scale?" And the answer is almost always the same "well no but it was around there"
