  1. ^^^And you'll have to go through a background check to buy it from the dealer. Same as purchasing a firearm. Welcome to NYS.
  2. Just another thought. Voting Cuomo out in the upcoming election might very well put a serious crimp in his viability as a presidential candidate in 2016. I consider that in itself to be a worthwhile goal as far as sending a message.
  3. I have a lot of out-of-state friends who want to come here for deer, turkeys, geese, trout, salmon... The laws and the costs keep most of them away. Good luck on whatever you decide! Adventure is good! I'll probably get to PA for some 400+yd woodchucks this summer. That's about the depth of my wallet.
  4. In NYS you have the right to use deadly force to counter deadly force in your home or place of business. You don't have the right to use deadly force beyond the confines of the building, whether it's your home or place of business. Street crimes are different and have lots of other rules and regulations. Mostly weighted against the person being attacked. Using deadly force against an unarmed intruder in your house or place of business in NYS will likely end up with you in front of a jury of the intruder's peers. Deadly force beyond those narrowly defined confines of home or business and you're probably toast. You can't chase the intruder down the street. There is no Castle Doctrine in NYS. No 'stand your ground' and defend yourself. And basically no legal right for you to stop criminals unless they're armed and facing you inside your house or place of business. Wrong? Absolutely!! The law where we live? Unfortunately it is.
  5. Hard to beat wool for warmth. Not a lot of choices for fancy camo and it's heavy as h***, but it is warm. Yikes, I am an old guy.
  6. Regarding NG exploitation; I'd like to know by whom, and by what standards are these opportunities going to be opened. I would also be interested in knowing who will be given power of authority in the future. Will this become a state mandate involving eminent domain somewhere down the road? Who will be held responsible for catastrophic events? These questions aren't likely to be answered by a candidate for office. But they're legitimate questions. I'm just asking, buddy. I'm not necessarily against it, I just want to know who stands to benefit the most.
  7. Thanks folks, just walked in the door. I should pay more attention. Chainsaw time will scramble up your head like that.
  8. Glad to see the discussion here. Thanks for the video link Mmkay. Good polished presentation, wish he had mentioned the SAFE act in the video. Also no direct mention of the natural gas issues. Not necessarily a deal-breaker for me, but more info is required. It's early, we'll see.
  9. Unfortunately, .22 rimfire can't be reloaded. One of my favorite pastimes lately has been 50 yd rimfire benchrest. The SAFE act means I can't buy the ammo that my gun likes any more, without the added expense of an FFL transfer. I'm not happy about this.
  10. Astorino is officially in, as other threads have stated. Lots of info out there. His stance on drilling/fracking for natural gas causes me some concern. Lots of info both for and against to sift through. Aside from NG, good clean water is one of the few things we have in our state. I'll have to think hard about possibly putting that in jeopardy. Great for the economy in the short term, but at what cost for the long term? Any thoughts?
  11. Hunting, or plinking/target shooting, or self defense are the technically correct responses when asked by someone in a position of authority. Any other kind of response, especially to LE or on something like a pistol permit application is asking for trouble. The person behind the counter is processing your background check and inputting information. Not a person of authority per se, but I can't think of a good reason to push it. There's a time and place for everything. I did a backwoods canoe trip with three friends back in the mid 1980's. We spent hours sorting gear and carefully stowing everything into 4 heavy packs in preparation for 12 days in the the middle of the wilderness in Quebec. We finally left Potsdam, headed for the bridge crossing in Ogdensburg at about 3 AM so that we could get a good headstart into the canoeing when we finished the 12 hour drive. We were laughing and joking and just happy to be moving. The first of our two vehicles went through the border crossing without a problem. When we pulled up, we did the expected Q&A thing, telling the border guy that we were with the vehicle ahead. All was fine until the officer asked, "Any alcohol or firearms?" To which my buddy said,"No thank you sir, we brought our own." A joke, as we had nothing of the sort with us. 4 1/2 hours later we were back on our way after having to repack all of the gear the humorless border agents had strewn all over the asphalt for us in search of a reason to keep us out of their country. Funny as hell to think back on, and we still tell the story whenever we get together, but it could have been worse. I wouldn't recommend trying it today. Could be much, much worse. A time and place for everything.
  12. A few basic tools and a rough idea of what you're doing and yer good to go. There is a learning curve if you want it to look like the grocery store stuff, but hey, you can still eat the mistakes until you get the hang of it!
  13. This will give you the current spot prices, http://www.greysheet.com/cdn/currentspots.asp I'm a coin collector and I've used ebay quite a bit over the years with good success. You'll end up paying about 13 to 14% in various fees and shipping charges and you need high quality photos, but you tend to get top dollar relative to the current spot. Don't worry about grading the coins as ebay doesn't want you to put an official grade on them anyway, other saying "very nice quality", etc. Post high quality close-up photos of both sides and the buyer will decide what to pay for it above spot value. Low grade coins are generally called 'scrap' and will sell at spot or a little more. Hope this helps a little.
  14. Deer and other wild animals are a lot better than weatherguessers. Then again, my knees and hips usually let me know when things are changing.
  15. Gets kinda' spooky when the gray matter takes over something that's physical that you know you can do, that you've been trained to do, and have done a million times before. And at the same time, it's something that is won or lost in your head before you ever pick up the bow. Tough to reconcile that contradiction. The ones that manage to figure it out are few and far between. The rest of us keep working at it. Positive mental attitude.
  16. Glad you got it worked out! I've been shooting bows since before compounds were a serious alternative. TP wasn't much of an issue before the whole draw, hold, aim, shoot sequence. It's usually the 'hold' part that gets a separate and unwanted part of your brain trying to tell the rest of your body what to do. I'm also a drummer. Jazz mostly. And as soon as I start to think too much about what I'm playing, I'll screw something up. The key is to get the part of your brain that doesn't belong to leave the rest of your body alone. I know, pretty Zen for a Sunday. I'm not normally like this. Point is, shooting a bow or a gun or playing drums, it's about learning how to turn off the part of your brain that makes your body react like it's a panic situation. As long as the form, skills and technique are there, don't think about it and especially don't focus on it. Give your brain some time off. Even think about something else while you're stackin' em in there.
  17. After a very quick search of possible early candidates: Rob Astorino is the current Westchester county executive. Very much against the SAFE act and and has said he will seek to repeal it. He also seems to be very much for natural gas exploitation, including fracking. It would appear that he has access to adequate financing to make a serious run for governor. Ed Cox is currently the chairman of the Republican State Committee. I'll confess that I didn't do much research here but didn't see anything that looked like a platform. Steve McLaughlin is currently a member of the NYS house of representatives®. One of the few who voted against the SAFE act. No further info at this time. Carl Palladino has stated that he will run if not opposed by Donald Trump. No new platform or agenda that I could find. See info for the 2010 race for the basics. Donald Trump has stated that he will run if there is no opposition in a primary race. No info on what his agenda or platform might be. Like I said, a very quick glance at the candidates. Lots more info about Astorino than the others because it seems he's serious about it and starting to talk. We won't know much more until they actually announce their contention. I'll keep updating as this moves forward.
  18. Rob Astorino, I believe. Haven't done much research on the gent yet, but the little I've seen so far looks pretty good. Anti SAFE and anti Cuomo, and close enough to the city that he won't seem like a foreigner to them.
  19. Absolutely!! Why do they want (or think they need) a list of who owns what firearms? I have never heard an acceptable answer to that basic question, probably because no one in power will come right out and say, "So that we know where to come and get them.". But you know that's the only real reason. It will make their jobs easier. BTW, I don't believe for one second that information submitted in a background check isn't held as what amounts to a registration database.
  20. Understood, Mike Rossi. Facebook is probably the best tool for mass-organizing. I was involved with it in the early days, but have since given up out of frustration with the attention span of the members. Maybe I should give it another look though. I've been working face-to-face with everyone that'll listen, informing people of the issues involved in the SAFE act and persuading them to vote against the people who helped to get it enacted. I'm amazed at the number who don't realize just how far-reaching the SAFE act is and are unaware of the questionable and shameful way that it was introduced and passed into legislation. I will give them a link to the list of legislators and their voting records on the issue, and urge them to get out and vote to change things. A very small step I know, but it's something.
  21. Our great state is a big ship that's been moving on it's current course with a lot of momentum for a lot of years. Arguably the biggest ship in the fleet that we call the U.S. Lots of ships in our wake, too. The little emperor stepped in to take the helm for while, and to stick with the analogy, he's not gonna rock the boat, just push the throttle a bit. It's going to take a lot of continuous and organized pressure from the passengers to change the direction of the ship. Will it happen? Good question. Can it happen? Absolutely, but it's gonna take a lot of work. To the OP, I'm not feelin' the love. I'm hurtin' here, and the little reach-arounds that are being offered just aren't enough.
  22. She did a nice job of making sure she gets a good divorce settlement. She'll be running for office soon.
  23. No bunnies for me today. But I did get some firewood cut.
  24. We're second amendment supporters, and we have just 8 months until we have the opportunity to make a difference in how we live. Do you care, one way or the other? If you do care what are you doing about it? Talking to and informing friends? Donating to campaigns? Helping to organize an opposition? Time to act folks, Mark
