  1. The forked part of the antler would probably sit in a peg-type coat rack as well! Very nice!
  2. While I agree with a great deal of what Jack Donovan says, a sticking point for me is and has been his lack of acknowledgement of the 'cyclical' nature of some of the most basic problems that plague the world today. History will repeat itself if left in an unchecked state. I posted this a while back and a handful here clicked on it, with no response. It's a very basic introduction to the forms of government that we have in existence today, and their cyclical tendencies. It's well worth the 10 minutes, and makes you think about where we've been and where we are today, and where we're headed. Not just the U.S., but the world. http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/21383-a-10-minute-video-government-101/
  3. I've tried to lose my last girlfriend, but she keeps finding me. Please, master. Teach me how to lose things.
  4. My firewood stacks sure took a beating this winter, and now it's gonna be too muddy to do any serious cutting for a while. I hate cutting in the summer heat, but I'm sick of this winter.
  5. A very interesting topic! It's not confined to criminal behavior. How about the slacker at work? The guy who doesn't pull his oar so that everyone else has to take up that slack. Non-workers are no longer threatened with beatings because we're civilized, but unless you work for the government, the threat of losing your job is very similar in many ways to the threat of violence. "The beatings will continue until morale improves."
  6. My science class demonstration around that grade consisted of skinning a muskrat for the pelt. My buddy stood in for the gambrel/hanger to hold him up for me. As I recall, not many classmates were really impressed, but I had a sack of them in my locker from the morning's run anyway. My offers to do a few more (on school time) were rejected for some reason. Times have certainly changed. I'm chuckling just thinkin' about it. Thanks!
  7. I wasn't aware of that WNYBH. Thanks for the info.
  8. Introduction of trout and salmon into Lake Ontario around 1980 or so pretty much put an end to the smelting there. April 27th was always the magic target date, for some reason. We'd head out in the afternoon to make sure there was an outlet from East Bay into the lake, then fish for bullheads until the smelt started running. I don't think there was a limit then, and I remember that 5 or 6 of us would end up with several 5-gal buckets full by the time the sun came up. We'd spend most of that day cleaning and cooking and freezer-bagging the smelt. There would be beer involved as I recall. The bullheads went into a big stock tank where they would stay alive for a week or so and we could process them at our leisure. Some good memories, for sure.
  9. That'll make a great Euro-style mount! Welcome to the site.
  10. We used to catch buckets of 'em in the '70's while we were waiting for the smelt to run in the bays along Lake Ontario. Nightcrawlers mostly but sometimes we'd use a stinky catfish bait concoction. Worms were easier, and they were free. Pancake batter with a little cornmeal mixed in for texture, either deep-fried or in a cast iron skillet. Tasty stuff.
  11. Congratulations! Keep us posted please. I've been eyeballing that one myself.
  12. My rimfire benchrest gun is/was a Ruger 10/22 with a thumbhole stock. Under the SAFE act it became an "assault rifle" so rather than register it, I'm building a new stock for it. Basically identical to the thumbhole stock but without the actual hole. Just jumping through the hoops in order to appease the anti's. Doesn't make much difference anyway because I can no longer mail-order the ammo it likes, and the FFL's I deal with aren't interested unless I order a couple cases at a time. Tough to come up with the $2500 for that. It's currently wearing a light-weight field stock for sniping squirrels and woodchucks, to keep it from becoming a 'safe queen'. Or a SAFE queen, as the case may be.
  13. That would be nice. He's stated recently that he "has plans for Washington" but he didn't elaborate. I guess it's going to be about following the money for the next few months as far as the NYS elections go.
  14. Sounds like B.S. to me too. At least the whole 'letters sent' scenario. It would appear that the numbers used as a baseline for how many so-called 'assault rifles' might be in any particular state are an estimate. How those estimates are arrived at is an interesting question in itself. So, the government's fear of non-compliance with the registration laws is based on someone's guess as to how many guns they think are in their state that need to be registered.
  15. Written into the SAFE act under 'private sales', the FFL is not supposed to charge more than $10 for a private transfer. On dealer to dealer transfers they can charge whatever they want, and it's usually in the $25 to $35 range. They can also refuse to participate in the transfer/sale. I haven't done a private sale under the new restrictions yet, but I'm guessing that a lot of FFL's won't want to bother with the paperwork for the 10 bucks. Maybe a $20 'tip' up front would help? Seems to me like just another way to limit gun sales/transfers overall.
  16. I find it astonishing how some folks use the US constitution to justify their activities only when it suits them and their agenda. I guess when you have more money than God, the next step is, well, being God.
  17. A total repeal is unlikely because there is just enough BS in there to keep the pro-SAFE folks armed, and the courts busy, for a long time. But we can nibble away at it. A federal judge has already considered the 7-round magazine limit "arbitrary". That's something. It's a small victory I'll take. Apathy and lack of awareness are what will keep the voting numbers of 2A supporters from getting rid of the current regime and it's mindset, over the long term. A defeatist attitude or a non-vote on the issue is basically a vote for the other side. It's NY and a handful of other states right now, but the SAFE act could become national policy very quickly if we don't all stand together on this. Get the word out and make sure everyone you know is informed and aware. Then get out and vote.
  18. Remington 870 express magnum w/ cantilever scope mount and Simmons whitetail 1.5 - 6? Excellent condition and a proven deer-getter. Not sure of a fair price off the top of my head. Let me know if you're interested.
  19. One cop who couldn't wait to put his foot on a door, so he put it in his mouth instead. Not typical of LE personnel at all.
  20. Trump has already said that he won't run unless there is no opposition within the party. Same thing for Palladino. Astorino is in the running, so the other two are probably out. Like it or not, the choice will be Astorino or Cuomo in November. Time to get behind the underdog and spread the word. There is no box on the ballot for 'not Cuomo'. How about, "The November to Remember"? Maybe I should ask him for a job.
  21. Far from stupid. He's one of the scariest politicians we've seen in our lifetimes. He's very smart, well-motivated, well-funded and well-equipped. He presents an agenda that makes Hillary Clinton look almost acceptable. Well, almost. He's shrewd , devious and underhanded, and doesn't care about anything but votes and popularity. A pure politician in all the worst possible ways. He will make a run for the presidency of the US in 2016. Being defeated in a race for governor in the big D state of NY will hurt him badly.
  22. Should have emphasized the 'will have to'. I was pointing out the intent of the law as written. To the OP, and to emphasize Culvercreeks post, search around here for info on the SAFE act (in the stickies at the top of this sub-forum) and learn who the politicians are who think it's a good idea. Then go and vote them out of office, and tell your friends too.
  23. Nope. I'm one of those guys that downloaded the bill the day after it was released to the public because I knew it was coming. Which was also the day after it was enacted. I've spent the past year being pi@@d off and trying to do something about it.
  24. Just puttin' it out there folks. Cuomo was born and bred to be a politician, and the presidency is the brass ring. An upset in the upcoming election in NY will help to put the brass ring just that much further out of his grasp. It's not as if we need any more reason to dislike him, but it's there, so I'll mention it. I'm on-board with what Doc's been saying for over a year now. It's personal, and I'm doing what I can to make it personal for as many other people as I can reach.
  25. No? He likely did pay $50 for both, at a flea market or something. C'mon. It was his big score of the day. He can turn that into $500 easy. Just like they say on tv, right?
