what part of the rut is on when rifle opens?
PREDATE replied to fearthebeard's topic in Deer Hunting
Have you ever personally knocked on any farmers doors and asked for permission? Also, farmers aren't the only land owners in the county. Yes, the majority of people will have a reason as to why they don't allow hunting, but there is no harm in asking. Good luck -

Good year for apples?
PREDATE replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
My eating apples didn't hardly produce. Crab apples are very plentiful though. -

Peak rut is just ramping up when gun season opens. I had a few encounters last year during the last week of bow season where bucks were chasing like crazy, looking for hot does. Keep at it. -
So your signature says SUMAN. The reason I noticed is because I recalled calling you out on an off topic spam post that you made under that name. You've made 1 post under the each name and both are not even related to the thread. Here's the link to the SUMAN profile. http://huntingny.com/forums/user/3411-suman/

Castration by pruners!!!

So did the cam show anything on the internal memory? Your culprit's mug should be on there. Should be a simple plug n' play! Then you can print the pic and post it around town and make an a$$ out of them, anonymously.

Yep the B-Mag and I think $350.00 is about what he paid. I'd scoop up a nice used .222 if I had the opportunity, but will probably just end up saving for a new bow or .204 ruger. An over/under combo like the tikka .222 over 12Ga. would be great as well. Til then, I'm content with just using the .22mag and #4buckshot outta the shotty.
-
I've never used a .17hmr, but I do use a .22mag during deer season as my area is shotgun only for deer. It would be worth a look into the new .17 Super Mag. My brother just got one and says it shoots phenomanally, devastating water jugs at 150+ yds.

1" cubes marinated for a few days (spiedies) on a skewer grilled on Memorial day. Nothing better. Everyone loves em.

Not really, just size difference. As for your other question, pretty much just use your own judgement as to whether or not the meat will spoil, at least cover the (unskinned but gutted) bird with grass and leaves. If the yotes, fox, opossum or skunks don't find it, you're all set. I know Walmart sells a camo backpack cooler for like $30. We use them for turkey hunting. Good for keeping calls dry and drinks/meat cool.

but I don't like mushrooms.

It's not difficult to field dress a turkey. I used to skin the whole bird, but nowadays just breast em out. Breasting involves no gutting, you just skin the breast and cut it away from the ribs. Then you walk away with 2 nice cutlets. Carry a gallon sized ziploc bag with you and a small cooler in the vehicle or blind.

It's bad when a cucumber has to hold it's burps! I know I enjoy a good one after a icy cold A&W root beer! lol

I was down in Liberty last week. Had breakfast in a little diner and bought a couple. I don't partake in any particular ones, just buy a few tickets when I see them. 1 or 2 dollars for a chance to win a gun is a fair investment in my eyes! The one I entered has these prizes. 1st prize- .270 Savage 10/110 Trophy hunter w/scope OR $350.00 cash 2nd prize- Mossberg 835 Max 4, 3 1/2" pump 12 Ga. camo OR $300.00 cash 3rd prize- Ruger 10/22 wood stock OR $200.00 cash

I avoided the parkway like the plague and no I didn't notice the choppers. There was no way to even come from up behind the vestal plaza(Tully's / Time Warner)? That's crap.

Cool story Beard! At least it wasn't a skunk. I've had that privilege, not a good situation! I hit the river for the first time this year today for some muskies, not 5 casts and a wicked t-storm blows in. Lots of widow maker trees down there so I boogied on out.
-
Yep, you do need both to be able to get bow tags though. Additional Requirements: Hunter Education is required in addition to this course to obtain a bowhunting privilege. It doesn't matter which course is taken first. If you wish to take both at once, DEC offers a convenient Combination Hunter and Bowhunter Education Course.

What about Man-Bear-Pig? lol I saw your avatar and figured you'd know what I was talking about.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you need to have your hunter safety course certificate before you take the bow course? Or is there a joint class?

He'll be here in town @ SUNY Binghamton on Friday, luckily the town hall style meeting is only open to ticket holders. Hopefully his stay is short! The local/state politicians will be busy sucking his ass. Like the current mayor of Binghamton, he and the OFA just walked around today rallying for help from Rep. Richard Hanna to help support the Public Safety and Second Amendment Right Protection Act of 2013. I'm glad mayor Ryan is in his last year, he's one big ass sucker!

Looks just like a spot that I hunt in Delaware County. Good to know, cuz I want a bobcat!

But these things always remain in the budget! lol

I have brought bucks in using a rattle/grunt sequence. They will come in looking though. They might circle to catch your scent. It's good to have a "blocking" feature in the terrain on your downwind side such as a steep gully or a stream so they will be less likely to circle down wind. I don't think it's all about whether it's a big buck, but rather a dominant buck hearing another buck in his core area, that's what draws them in. They wan't to show dominance so that when the does go into estrus, he won't have little bucks to contend with. Using audible lures is effective in NY when used in moderation IMO. They just need to hear it. Calling/rattling in empty woods is obviously not going to get you results and that's when hunters become discouraged. Try it, you might just pull in a buck that otherwise would have passed by for good , only to get killed 2 miles away by the kid who was wailing away on some rattling antlers.
