I always say that you should hunt the way that makes your experience the best for you... i was just expressing my opinion as it pertains to me... hunting is about enjoying the experience and if that does it for you... then its a good thing.

I guess I am lucky to have the best of both worlds... I own my own land... lease land.. and have hunted with the same group of guys in a camp in the ADK's for 25 years . I am never at the mercy of anyone else... usually I hunt alone... but I truly enjoy hunting with my buddies up north... which I do many weekends during the deer season... we have our occasional disagreements, but the amount of respect we have for one another keeps any argument in check... our friendships are way more important than any one mans opinion. Any time you get a group of guys together you are going to have differences of opinions or ideas. If it ever gets where I'm no longer having fun with the guys, then I'll move on to whatever works better for me.. sometimes thing just don't work out and definitely things always change over the years. If you're a young guy.. its better to experience the changes early so that you can move on and get settled elsewhere. Tolerance sometimes helps make things go smoother... biting your tongue for the greater good, which for me is spending time with gentlemen that I enjoy and respect... doing what we all love to do.

Here is where our taxes go for Education

The real truth is that we are paying for a Rolls Royce with life long warrantee and tires and getting a Yugo...lol ... I just want to pay for a minivan and get a minivan... and when the minivan gets old, trade it in for a new minivan... not keep the old minivan in the back yard and keep paying for repairs and new tires... while it is retired and not being used...that would be nice. -
Not talking about the treestand.. I get the whole treestand thing and have nothing against them... I think a swivel seat is just plain lazy... not a bad idea if thats your thing.. but lazy non the less. I think if you need to make hunting that effortless.. why not just hire someone to hunt for you while you sit home and watch hunting shows...LOL

That was a staged shot for my website and I was referring to a swivel seat... not a treestand... I do not hunt from a treestand.

DIY Turkey Box call
nyantler replied to Deerthug's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
Actually the Bass wood is a good wood to use... you might find thinner cedar pieces by using lining that they make for closets and cedar chests... I think Home Depot and Lowes sell a thinner tongue and groove cedar that might work great for your purposes... violins are made usually with maple backs and spruce tops... any softwood shaved and sanded to the right thickness will give good resonation as sound boards... just keep messing around and you'll find the right tone. Thats how they did it in the old days... you can use hardwood for soundboards too... they just need to be sanded really thin... but because they are harder they can be made thinner than softwood and still hold up -
I think the best thing to do to make a youngster repect a firearm is to let him shoot one.... the first time my son pulled the trigger on a shotgun he gained a whole new respect for its power and quickly learned that this was no toy... he was very careful about how he handled a gun after that...

Now you can try using different woods to get different sounds... the other thing you can do carve the paddle so that it is rounded on the bottom.. not sure if you did that already... it will give you better contact with the side walls... if you taper the sidewalls also (thicker on bottom thin on top) you will get better resonation as well. The closer together your sidewalls are the higher the pitch... farther apart the lower the pitch -
Think your taxes were bad this year?

Add the additional taxes on to big oil and watch the cost of gas really skyrocket... you'll be begging for $4 a gallon... or we can tax them to the point that they sell all their oil to china and let china sell the oil back to the US at 3 times the cost... -

Not really true virgil... we have the highest standards of almost every country in the world when it comes to food... yet it still is not good enough... I will agree though that are treatment of animals in some cases falls way below many other countries... hard to believe sometimes.

Brian.. the books are not free to entries... there is a new 16th addition available on the website www.nysbigbuckclub.com you can purchase a book there.

I think that is right Doc.. you can't believe everything reported... as for knowing when a line has been crossed... most intelligent human beings know when they are stepping into "iffy" territory... so is true with big business... the people in charge know when they are pushing the envelope... I agree that we must be careful not to hinder progress, but there is a difference between progress and flat out pushing the envelope for greed... I think the greed is what we're talking about here... in todays wallstreet driven business world... the family doesn't own the business anymore... shareholders do.. and they really don't care about what product is being produced... they care only about the bottom line and are willing to do anything they can get away with to make a profit.. knowing that as soon as profits begin to wain.. they can sell away their interest without any attachment.. that is much harder to do for family owned businesses.

I agree that food items are a bit different than other consumer products when it comes to buying locally from a small business... Definitely safer to grow your own... but if I have a choice between food grown elsewhere and food grown locally... I'll take my chances on the local vegetable stand...
-
You have to remember too that its the people that allow all of this to happen by not patronizing small local businesses... they would rather save a few cents... if you research some of the small townships in the US that still have small family owned Mom & Pop stores that the community is loyal too.. you'll find that these communities thrive and the people in general are much happier and more caring of their neighbor. The urban, fast paced, "me me me" mindset is eating away at the sense of community and traditional values... and we do little to stop it. People use to rely on hard work, their neighbors and the community for survival... now they rely on the government and big business

Frost / Cold Weather tonight? What will happen?
nyantler replied to burmjohn's topic in General Chit Chat
I'd be nervous about apple trees.. but even without the frost it has been kind of cold for the bees and many of the trees might not get pollinated anyway with such an early bloom... -
I think a nap is sometimes the best part of the hunt..LOL... especially when turkey hunting!! I remember turkey hunting with an old timer friend of mine (since passed away).. we had hunted quite a few days in a row and it was the last day of the season.. we got in the woods a little before light and sat together under a huge oak tree... made a few calls around first light... then we both fell asleep until noon...lol.. we opened our eyes almost simultaneously.. look at one another and he said, "Had enough for one season?" I said, "Yup!" and off we went... we laughed about that day for years.

Hunting isn't all about carrying a gun and doing the killing... I'm sure your boy would love the experience just because he's there doing it with you... maybe that experience will make him appreciate hunting for what it is really about

Think your taxes were bad this year?
nyantler replied to Grouse's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Income taxes are the least of my concerns as far as taxes goes... my property and school taxes are far higher in proportion and not based on any reality... They pick a made up acessed value based on nothing... then I pay money and get little in return... it is certainly not equitable when it comes to all the people in the community... I get penalized for keeping a nice home, while the shithook down the road that makes mega bucks and whos house looks like something straight from the Munsters pays less. In 20 years I have paid nearly $120,000 in property taxes... just think how much more I could have contributed to the economy if I had that in my bank account instead. My home is now on the market and I am moving a tiny home where taxes are less than half of my current tax... -
My wife loves hunting season.. she gets way more control of the TV remote..LOL
