Where i hunt there are not a lot of deer running around with tags punched in their ears.. so I would probably think something was up... but if I had no prior knowledge of a deer farm in that area or a farm deer on the loose.. I think I might pull then trigger as well and deal with the rest later... hard tellin' not knowin'

Good for you Geno.. I know you have been looking for a while.

I'm sure a lot... but I was being serious.. thats what I would really do..

I might hang the antlers on the front of my camp for a conversation piece or just good decoration... maybe cut it up and have some knife handles made or an antler lamp...

LOL...about 8 total weeks of bow in NY, around 8 weeks total for shotgun, rifle or pistol or crossbow, little over 2 weeks of muzzloader only total. But if you add on the gun seasons to muzzleloader.. you can hunt about 2 1/2 months with your muzzleloader if you choose... how much more do you fellas need??... You're killin' me here..

I have seen the tags on deer farm bucks, they are usually very highly visible... they stick out like a sore thumb because the colors are so unantural to the animal and the tags are usually quite large.. in a bowhunting situation I would think they would be quite visible. But, at longer distances during gun seasons they might not be as easily detected. With a gun I could see killing the buck without knowing it was tagged... then add the elements that the buck traveled a long way from the farm, you didn't know that there was a farm nearby or that a buck had escaped and the chances of it being killed by an unsuspecting hunter gets greater... personally I would tell the farmer if I mistakingly killed his buck and would not mount the buck... it would just seem like too much of a downer to hang a farm buck on my wall .... just my opinion.

Misfortune maybe if you shoot it not knowing its your neighbors deer.. if you know its his deer and see the tag.. I would think it would be a good gesture to at least notify the neighbor that you've seen his deer.. I would even tell him if I shot it by mistake

I think that identifying your target is one of the things that is stressed most often during a hunter safety course... I would contend that most, if not all, hunters know this, have learned it... I'm even sure there are some that are on this forum that have heard it more times than they can count... yet there are still those that refuse to practice it... Yes, I'll bet even some on this forum... it's the old.. "that could never happen to me" syndrom... it's so much easier and safer just to do the right thing... unfortunately one can only lead a horse to water.. but can't make him drink. -
Look what I found when I was going through a box of knives I have.. didn't even know I had it!! It's a 6" blade... not in bad shape at all... I think it was my dad's.

Very Nice Work!! -
I think the january hunt on LI is directly related to the limited habitat and keeping the population to a managable level... I don't think they care about what sex is being taken just that more deer are being taken. They are managing deer on LI not for balance, or even for hunting for that matter... just sheer population control.

I agree most guys wouldn't even see the tag until after and should not feel bad about shooting it... if I knew of the deer and where it came from before hand I woudn't shoot it... although I'm sure the deer was far from tame... it would be similar to the Cornell Buck if I knew about the deer prior... just wouldn't excite me.

The one incident I am aware of happened a few miles from where I live... the guy was a taxidermist and raised deer for photgraphy purposes... Don't qoute me on this.. but, I believe they euthenized all of his deer... I also heard that he had given venison to a game dinner in the area that was feared contaminated... nobody at the dinner had any ill effects from having eaten the meat. I knew of the guy and he was kind of a bandit and got caught doing some shady stuff... I don't even know if anyone knew he had any captive deer... until the the game dinner incident... I am not sure of all the details... just bits and pieces I heard at the time from others that knew him... eliminating deer farms would not have stopped this guy...

I turkey hunted with Bill Jordan, Jim Varney, Rob Keck and some other "so called" celebs... I use to do a big weekend celebrity fundraiser turkey hunt every year back in the late 90's... it was fun... the nice part was that it wasn't a staged hunt.. it was held on leased land here in NY... and was the same kind of hunting we're all use to here in NY... none of the celebs did any better than anyone else... because the function was put on by non celebs all of the big shots that were present acted like regular guys... with the exception of Rob Keck... who was probably one of the biggest self centered A-holes I have ever met... I can't not think of a handful of people in the world that I have met that I would ever say that about.. but I genuinely do not like the man... and because of him I will never be a member of the NWTF. Bill Jordan, however was a great guy... and Jim Varney, who I got to know quite well, was probably one of the most intelligent men that I have ever met and one of the funniest.

Not really necessary to eliminate them.. like 4 season says.. they are highly regulated... there is more danger form hunters bringing in kills from out of state than any of the deer farms... it would be easy for a hunter to bring an infected deer from an out of state hunt without even knowing it... most hunters, believe it or not ... have no idea that there are laws against transporting deer into the state.. and it is harder to police... making it much more of a threat than any deer farm.

Fly fishing can be as complicated or as simple as you make it... either way it is an exciting way to fish... most places that I fish don't have the kind of room to do the fancy casting that you see on TV... where you can lay line out for many feet... flip casting in a small steam is much more common for me... there are streams where the trout absolutely won't take anything but the hatch in that area during that time of year.. and there are places where they will take almost anything presented. You can get as far into fly fishing as you like... and its hard not to when you get hooked on it..( no pun intended)

Very good point. Sure, all of us that love to hunt would like to have the season longer to prolong the enjoyment we get from hunting.. but from a conservation and management point of view.. a longer deer hunting season probably is not be a good idea...

As long as there are people who try to buck the system there will be the potential for CWD... as we all know.. some just refuse to play by the rules sometimes...

Good to know Doc.. the trailers looked good.. thanks for the heads up.

Better get use to it.. It happens all the time..LOL

Riding my Harley, teaching taekwondo, metal detecting, trout fishing, woodworking, 3D archery in the summer, Muzzleoader league in Winter... on the nerdy side I have a pretty extensive stamp collection, and sports card collection... I had to stop playing lacrosse at 50... couldn't risk getting hurt and being out of work ... I think I miss that mostly because I'm still physically able to play, but it was time.

As a follow up from the DEC so we're all clear and educated arguments can continue knowing the facts.. DEC will continue annual statewide surveillance sampling and testing of suspected clinical deer. Restrictions will be maintained on importation of risk materials in parts and carcasses from most states and provinces. Restrictions on the feeding of wild deer and moose will remain in effect. DEC will also continue to require all persons holding special licenses to possess captive white-tailed deer to comply with the cervid health program requirements administered by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (DAM).

This ought to clear this up... New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has received confirmation of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) from two wild white-tailed deer sampled in central New York. The first positive result in a wild deer was announced on April 27, 2005 and came from a yearling white-tailed deer sampled from the Town of Verona, Oneida County. The second positive result is from a three year old doe, located within a mile of the location where the initial positive result was detected. These are the first known occurrences of CWD in wild deer in New York State. Since CWD testing began in 2002, a total of just over 32,000 deer have been sampled statewide, including 7,300 deer directly from the Oneida/Madison County containment area. Despite intensive testing of wild white-tailed deer, no additional cases have been detected in the New York since 2005.

Sorry John forgot to add that in too...

Thats pretty much it in a nutshell.. one is legal the other isn't... other than that probably no diffence... except the amount of work that goes into one versus the other.
