Maybe they should be able to use their buck tag as a doe tag if they're only after meat.. or maybe they should have the choice to forego a buck tag if they want and get a doe tag instead... they wouldn't be able to kill a buck, but they would have an opportunity for meat. That might work if they don't want to hunt AR bucks.

Filling tags has nothing to do with knowing anything about hunting.. killing maybe.. not hunting.

During cold weather deer move less, because cold temperatures cause them to lose body heat. However, when prolonged cold weather keeps deer from feeding regularly; or when low food sources and cold weather cause them to loose calories and weight, they are forced to search for food, and they often move during the warmest part of the day, usually in the late afternoon or early evening, especially if there is cloud cover that may keep heat from dissipating. We are talking extreme cold weather here(cold vs too cold)... 20 degrees isn't necessarily cold to a deer.. but as the temps drop close to 0 or lower... deer restrict their movement to conserve body heat...

Keep up that good spirit.. good things happen to those that wait..

Sounded to me like you were trying to justify not reporting someone breaking the law because they wouldn't be dealt with by the DEC .. hey if I'm wrong .. sorry.. please explain what you meant then...

Actually dave he was just using you to throw another insult to the rest of us.. don't get a big head now..lol

That would be which, not witch..just sayin'...lol.. You should be glad there is less people here, that means there are less that think you are a wacko... I'm assuming your personality doesn't change much forum to forum.

I haven't filled my tags.. but somehow I don't think I'm the loser here..lol

the truth is that the reason most hunters are not seeing deer is because of something they are or aren't doing. I had a fella say to me one time that he sat in his stand all season long and didn't see one deer... my reply was.. did it ever occur to you to maybe change your stand placement or get up and walk around a bit or maybe try hunting somewhere else? He looked at me like I was speaking a different language. If deer were entirely predictable.. every hunter would fill their tags each year.. yes deer hole up during certain times of the season.. then go looking for them!... they change their travel patterns... then change your stand location... stop blaming deer populations for your lack of seeing deer, that is not the problem... take a look in the mirror if you are looking for the problem.

hunting unposted property is fair game to many hunters until that unposted property is thiers... then somehow they have a huge problem with it..lol

Bernie Madoff is in jail for over 100 years so I don't see how his crime was overlooked... and any infraction I have ever reported was looked into by the proper authorities... what they do about it is up to them.. our job is only to report what needs reporting the rest is up to the DEC... I remember you saying that breaking the law isn't something you would do.. but you always seem to be defending peoples right to break it... seems a bit odd... I'm all for giving the old timer an opportunity to do the right thing... and would not seek him out trying to catch him doing something wrong.. but I damn sure wouldn't give him my blessing when he's admitting to breaking the law right in front of me... maybe if he told me he was going to steal your 4 wheeler so that he could have easier access to your neighbors posted property I should give him my blessing.. why not just hand him my pistol.. its easier to hide than a rifle in the truck... sometimes people really need to take a look at what they're saying.. maybe they'll realize how little sense it makes...

four seasons.. although i am like you with the small buck thing and the doe thing.. I don't think that the way you have said it is really helping the cause... little too much about you.. and assumptions about others
-
Makes me wish I said it more like that... pretty much says it all... good post
-
and never will be.. its in our DNA as hunters..

I have killed a few good bucks in their beds during very cold weather... one even on crunchy snow.. they seem to be willing to take a chance that you won't see them rather than burn up valuable energy trying to flee.. I try to remember though that there are always exceptions to any general rule..
-
Unfotunately for hunting.. all of what you said is exactly how it is.. and kind of the point i was making about where the problem lies.

Apathy is apathy... the dedication or involvement to, for or in hunting would be nothing... they're just going out to get a deer... which offers no dedication or involvement .. at least the way it was stated in the post... There are loads of hunters that look at hunting as relaxing and enjoyable that aren't apathetic to the importance of managing deer for hunting.. even in it's lowest form... managing doesn't have to just be some QDM type model.. Lord knows we haven't got much of that happening in the way of the DEC... but ensuring that everyone involved in hunting will continue to "get a deer" is worth at least a fleeting thought about deer numbers and habitat by all hunters that participate in the activity... thats all I'm saying... I suppose just getting a deer is great for some and certainly their choice.. as it should be.. but doing nothing, deserves nothing and usually gets nothing... I don't think I agree that these people are the ones to stop the downfall.. that would be the avid hunters and people that do care that help ensure that others who don't care can get their deer.

too cold definitely makes a difference.. especially this late in the year... deer expel more energy in extremely cold weather just keeping their body warm and will go to great lengths to conserve fat resources for the coming winter... bucks will tend to hang tight in their beds sometimes letting hunters get dangerously close.. just to conserve energy... if you have ever notice beds in the middle of a cut field.. that is deer bedding at night in or very near their food source.. they will do less traveling even at night trying to save their fat reserves ...

Sometimes I think we as hunters and people need to know when it's time to "give it up"... the fact that he is a good guy doesn't excuse illegal action... nobody is above the law or the rules... we will all reach the point someday if we live long enough where we need to realize that we just have to hang the gun up and accept that we aren't able to hunt... that doesn't mean we can't stop by and offer up some venison to the old timer.. or offer to take him to one of those heated huts for a day of legal hunting...... life isn't fair.. but it isn't fair for everyone. I'm sure some of the handicapped hunters I know would have a problem with it.. seeing how they have spent their entire hunting life finding ways to hunt legally with the help of others. There is much more you can do than just allow someone to do something that is not legal Just wondering how he guts and drags the deer out with his disabilty? Does he have to get someone else to help? Putting them in a position where they are doing something illegal as well? Are you ok with putting yourself in a position where you could lose your hunting priviledges by offering to help him do something illegal.. Just something to think about... you'd be better off just bringing him some venison.. or helping him get in the woods some other way.. if you feel that strongly about it. A hunters weapon of choice and how you feel about why they hunt with that weapon has no bearing on this subject.. seeing how they are doing it legally... the fact that it made you feel good to wish the guy luck also has no bearing on the fact that what the nice gentleman was doing is illegal.. you don't have to like it... it just is what it is.

I have learned that you just make a date ... if you show you show .. if not we'll see ya next time... trying to get a concensus on date and time is nearly impossible with large groups
-
my eyesight isn't terrible.. I just realized that I don't see my old iron sights as well as I use to... especially when a deer is moving... I don't have a problem if they're standing still ... which is not very often if you hunt the way I hunt... I have checked out the fiber optic sights and they are much much better... having all my guns converted over.

congrats to you an your dad Treeguy.. and I love that pic of you with the chainsaw!! makes me laugh everytime I see it.

Why Did we Creat HuntingNY.com?
nyantler replied to burmjohn's topic in Hunting New York Annoucements and News
Guys Guys.. this is only a forum... you need to get much thicker skins.. if someone typing something on a forum really gets to you that badly.. how do you survive in reality?...there are way more a-holes in real life...this is primarily just fellas and gals with stong opinions... although the name calling is childish it is just part of the human condition and shouldn't be taken so seriously.. for some here it gives them a chance to spout off knowing they aren't gonna get their teeth punched in for being an idiot..lighten up a bit.. you'll have way more fun... and great job on the site John.. it seems to be a crowd pleaser. -
And there my friend is much of where the problem lies... and why some things are the way they are in some areas. Apathy will someday be huntings greatest downfall...
