I think the main reason for mentioning the taker is to get access to the buck.. If we told the guy he couldn't have his 15 minutes of fame most would never bother to get them scored.. again by tickling the hunter a bit it allows us access to the buck.
-
We shouldn't have to give more... little of what we give now goes to what it is suppose to.. we would only be giving more to something other than the conservation effort
-
Then I guess you'll have to shoot a small buck then...

Those infractions aren't from being older , those are guys that just don't care and have been doing that since they were younger.. the fact that they are older and slower is just the reason they got caught.

These record books don't do anything to promote the worst in people, but I agree they seem to bring out the worst in some, but those guys would be that way anyway.. those record keeping clubs are about the deer not the hunter.. they were developed as a means to record beautiful bucks (not great hunters) taken over the years for others to see in the future.. the hunters themselves are the problem.. a guy takes a 140 class buck... literally by accident... and all of a sudden he's a big buck hunter.. wants his name up in lights. I have been handing out Big Buck certificates to guys for many years...as well as printing their stories for about 15 years.. I usually get a chance to speak with a lot of them and I can tell you very few of them are humble when it comes to shooting a big buck... we give them their 15 minutes of fame just to tickle their fancy then they are forgotten.. the buck is the only thing guys want to see after that... The only reason not to enter a buck in the books would be to keep others from enjoying the animal with you... You shouldn't be concerned about it being a contest, because none of the people involved in entering your buck see it that way. Its not about who's is bigger.. its about celebrating the animal and it's beauty..

and there is the rub, Joe. They can't...there is NO legal avenue for them. Yes, you have a point there..I personally have no problem with crossbows during archery for the physically challenged... not necessarily the same as disabled... disabled is too broad a term... the guy who has a bad back and can't work is disabled...and probably recieving a check for it from you and me.. he's not suppose to be hunting anyway!.. -
Thats the part that makes it interesting.. the apples to oranges... both affect the you and me.. one by taking away a portion of the game we hunt,, the other tax money... I'm not sure where I stand on this one, but definitely an interesting topic. I feel for the business owners and farmers trying to make a living, but remember, they made a choice to take up a business where they are planting things in the wild where animals live..with that comes a ceratin element of risk.. kind like investing in the stock market.. things could go either way ;D

Shirt tails and pockets as well..

yeah I agree now.. I was thinking offseason meaning during summer months as well.. tough call this time of year though

I know its a stretch... I was trying to get at the fact that there may be other ways to deter game from the area as opposed to killing them off as a remedy. I think the argument for the permits was because of the loss of livelyhood vs the importance of the animal. Just thought I'd throw in a protected species to see what the thought would be then. I'd be curious what the DEC's position would be there as well.

Yeah after thinking about those heavily snow covered areas.. I think suppplimental feeding might be ok there... maybe clearing the area of snow for the deer to be able to get to a food source would be better... tough call... I'm not a fan of supplimental feeding unless its a last resort

1000+ extra hits on that video is great...now there are 1000 more people that no how wrong it is...

none that I would shoot..LOL

CWD is a possiblity, but I'd be more worried about upsetting the natural feeding habit

I have a friend that has a non-profit org. called advanced strategies.. that takes physically handicapped hunters out for all kinds of hunting and fishing.. they have even taken blind hunters out. Non of them use a crossbow... some do need things like blow tubes for trigger releases and have compound bows with draw holding mechanisms... I think if they can find a way to do it without a crossbow.. guys with lesser disabilities can sure do the same... -
Ok here is one to think about.. what if this nursery had a problem with hawks, owls or eagles nesting in the trees and scarring them making them unmarketable.. do we still issue special permits to kill off those protected animals? Remember they are hurting the guys ability to feed his family and pay the mortgage.

Curious what taking a small buck off a property that doesn't have many bucks to begin with does for increasing the amount of bucks you'll see in the future?

I disagree CW ... I thought it was a lot of fun debating the rocket and blur... it also brought out a lot about both the guys and what they really stand for... By now you guys ought to know that you won't catch me being too politically correct... we're all adults here and can handle a little name calling.. if you don't enjoy the thread go to another and leave it to the guys that want to keep up the argument... other than rockets profanity.. I thought most of the guys handled themselves just fine.. I was thoroughly entertained by the thread, if others weren't well there are plenty of other threads to explore.
