  1. Taken this morning near Perrysburg, NY
  2. He was apprehensive at first but is loosening up now and enjoying the biggest buck he ever shot. He even posted the buck on his Facebook page. I would love to know if its a white deer or a piebald... unusual for piebalds to get that mature without the roman nose and to be all white... it happens, but it's really rare.
  3. Ask your butcher about a spray they use to kill the ticks on the deer before processing... my butcher uses something, but I never thought to ask him what it was.
  4. My feelings exactly... much different than when some of us started hunting... the hunting culture is just not the same... I think access has a lot to do with creating that culture
  5. I read an article in Peterson's Hunting called "The Great Deer Decline"... It just happened to catch my eye because of all the same narratives going around about how the deer numbers are declining. The author talks about the "end of the good old days". The truth is that the deer "sightings" are declining which is a much different thing. I do agree that the amount of actual hunters out hunting seems to be dropping. Deer are not being pushed and are content with laying nice and cozy all day long without being interrupted by wandering hunters. I still believe that it all is more about how hunters are hunting than it is about deer numbers... add to that the decline in the number of deer hunters and it pretty much explains what is going on. Still no excuse for the DEC's doe only rule imposed this year... that's one I'm not sure any of us understand totally. I certainly don't see NY as overrun with deer.
  6. He would have gotten a "different" opinion had he been the guy that killed the biggest buck of his life in that area and saw numerous doe... the writer's opinion is based on his experience which is a valid opinion based on "his" experience. There are many factors involved in why hunters are or are not seeing deer. All opinions are strictly relative to any hunters personal experience in the woods. I'll bet you could find many hunters that would claim the opposite as the writer based on their hunting experience thus far. I'm not saying you're overrun with deer... but I'll bet it isn't as bleak as some might think
  7. Not a NY buck.. been claimed by many other states for years.
  8. Most official measurers will green score the bucks before the dry time, just because we enjoy measuring and seeing the rack in person!
  9. Remember that 35 acres is a small piece of land relative to deer hunting. Small pieces for deer can change simply by a neighbor doing something crazy with his adjoining property. I wouldn't pay a lot for small acreage, but I guess "a lot" is relative to the person spending it. Do what ever makes ya happy.
  10. There is a 60 day drying period before it can be officially scored for the books... in this case the Benedict buck was scored by an official measurer and is an official green score... meaning not done by the guy's brother in law that never scored a buck but learned how from a guy that never scored a buck ...
  11. That is a very good bear for NY... I think it's bigger than the pic makes it look
  12. The New York record is 22-7 so my bet is that this bear is not 22... but maybe the picture doesn't do it justice. Plus the skull is measured after boiling. They may have tried to measure it with the fur still on which would add about 4" to the measurement
  13. That buck will be on the website... it has been officially scored as a non-typical 189 gross... 170 net NT The score doesn't really do it justice because of the mass on the tines which only get scored for length not mass... the g2's are as big around as the beam! The fact that it's a 7x4 didn't help the score either. I don't know what the gross typical score was, but I'm guessing it was around 180
  14. we pay $3600 for 600 acres per year... that is about the going rate $6 an acre... I would never pay $700 for 35 maybe $200 - 225
  15. http://www.nyantler-outdoors.com/2015-new-york-whitetails.html 9 pages .. over 250 bucks so far... enjoy!
  16. LOL ... There are a lot of "I don't share my deer pics" that have posted a lot of their deer pics... and the " Have some respect for the animal" types that post pics that don't portray that respect that they demand from others... taking good pics is not for everyone... this was just an article to help those that would like to take better pics but need some guidance... the rest of you can carry on... your deer.. your pics... your choice of how to take them. This wasn't meant to start a pissing match over who thinks taking photos is important or not. All pictures capture memories, maybe not the greatest part of the whole memory, but a part of it just the same.
  17. There are only a few of us that think of the traditional stuff when the word "muzzleloader" is mentioned... good that some still keep that tradition alive... patch and round ball all the way! An inexpensive way to get started vs. the inline
  18. Those are good quality photos Grow...
  19. I have used nothing but the "True Talker" for the last 20 years... can do all the vocalizations with one call.
  20. There is always one trouble maker in the bunch... but you're right... it's your photo, it can be as terrible a photo as you like... this is for those that want a better photo and aren't sure how to do it.
  21. I've seen more woodcock last weekend than I've seen in the last 20 years in Madison County.. I don't hunt them any more, but it brought back memories of when my Dad and I did many years ago.
