Now thats what I'm Talkin' about!! TR19

A 1.5 year old is an adult deer... just not a mature adult deer... It's breeding with does is perfectly natural. The idea of passing on a young buck comes from wanting to extended the age structure in the buck population of a given area... then, as in many animal species, with so many older of the species being present many of the younger wouldn't get to breed as much do to the increased competition with more older animals.

Phade.. that buck is a BIG 6 point.. nice deer
-
good luck to you Saturday as well Burt

I switched a long time ago from butter to Lehigh Valley... now I use a mixture of denatured alcohol, and murphy's oil soap... that works great for patches... and you can put ball after ball in without cleaning
-
Bubba .. I do the 70's hawkin too same powder measure and patch and balls as well... i also use a CVA flint 50 cal and sometime My old TC Scout.
-
I took a big 8-point last year that had a huge wound on his left shoulder and when he hit the ground the antler on the right fell off his head.. that was Dec. 10th..the left antler remained intact and wasn't loose at all

I honestly don't understand how guys don't see deer.. well unless they spend all their time hunting in a stand waiting for a deer to go by.. then maybe. i spend all my time on the ground and see at least one deer a day and in the last 15 years or so have had opportunities to take bucks every year that I have passed on... yet guys that hunt stands on the same land I hunt tell me they aren't seeing anything.. I really don't get it... why stay in the stand then?

Definitely an injury to the pedicle. But not necessarily in the same year. If a buck has damage to an antler away from the pedicle, like a broken tine or beam he will growth that back the next year... if he damaged the pedicle the injury will deform the antler growth on that pedicle every year. Genetics usually doesn't involve deformed antlers or stunted growth on only one side. Plus there is the possiblility of an injury to the opposite side of his body during antler growth that year which is common.

Your buck is really nice to Burt.. but actually its an 8-point frame which gets scored as an 8 minus the tine. Not a true 6-pointer. If it didn't grow any brow tines it would have been a true 6... very nice buck though.
-
Burt.. I've been scoring deer for a lot of years and although that buck is a great 6-pointer it doesn't quite look like it scores 117.. maybe 100. Still a very very nice 6-pointer
-
still a younger buck .. but a good one none the less

Just got off the phone with Cathy Turner... what a great lady... her buck was unofficially scored at 182 gross and 176 net. She will be getting it officially scored after the required dry time. If the score sticks(which I think it will) She will have the #2 all-time archery typical for NY. She is submitting a story for my website which I will post when I recieve it.

Just curious how a muzzleloader would not be considered a firearm?
-
I'd say that's a LARGE 10 -pointer!

Is this going too far, to control land and deer population?
nyantler replied to mossy725's topic in Deer Hunting
Usually coyotes won't deplete a deer herd... they usually only are a problem with new born fawns.. they don't like to have to kill adult deer to eat if there are other food sources such as small game (rabbits, mice etc.) It would be like us always having to fight a 200 pound man before we eat. Coyotes are oppotunists and yes have been known to kill adult deer on occasions, especially if they are in a weakened state or injured. As far as hunting them to control population.. its very hard. They have a very tight knit pack with an alfa male and female... and are very territorial and will keep defend there turf against other rogue coyotes... if you kill of the alfa 'yotes it makes room for any rogue coyotes that might want to invade the area... sometimes not seeing deer is just the produce of some other factor or just plain back luck. -
I would have passed on him, but a very nice first buck...
-
hey Bubba I agree that the neighbors will shoot them if they got the opportunity.. i guess my point is that at least if I let them go they have a CHANCE to possibly make it.. if i shoot him he has no chance. I'm hoping everyday that little guy walks he gets a bit smarter to help him make it to be an old buck. Actually I have kind of followed your posts and i am impressed with where, how and with what weapons you have killed deer. You sound like a guy I'd enjoy having a camp.

Its good hearing other ideas ... Sometimes I really don't think that some hunters would really care about deer if they couldn't hunt them... they don't take the time to educate themselves on whats really going on... I respect an opposite opinion as long as the guy has a little idea about whats being talked about. I guess I'm a bit hardcore about the management thing because I've been doing it so long.
