  1. Sorry Doc.. he said Vertical BOW and crossBOW ... sounds like archery equipment to me. And, I never think of GUN when someone says crossbow. Still a string and an arrow... sights and release... just like most compound bows.
  2. If that buck was shot in NY you'd have heard about it!! There isn't a heck of a lot of secret buck kills out there... I meant legal buck kills
  3. Lucky part for most might be seeing the deer.. the skill comes with the proficiency to kill the deer with your weapon of choice. although the fact that my flint lock goes off or not can have a little to do with luck!
  4. Definitely the better clothing and hunting gear has made it easier to sit.. and sitting for a spell is never bad.. I guess I'm talking about the guy who plunks his ass all day, everyday, in the same stand and then complains he isn't seeing much. Which I believe is a good portion of the hunters I have encountered over the years. I'm ok with guys who like the treestand thing if thats what they like... I just personally feel its the least productive way to hunt unless you have a physical disability.
  5. I'm totally with you Bubba...Exactly
  6. I'm not sure exactly where you fellas hunt but I haven't seen any decline in hunters in Central NY.... at least the places where I hunt.. and for the first time in 30 years I actually saw hunters in the adirondack woods that I hunt... I think the lack of seeing deer has a lot to do with guys sitting all day in treestands... especially in the bad weather conditions we've had this year.. until bowhunting became big... treestands were seldom used.. I grew up going after whitetails not sitting around waiting for them.. I know treestands have a place in hunting .. I feel that too many hunter use them like they use their couch at home. A good friend of mine and a very well known hunter once said that hunting out of a treestand is not hunting.. its waiting. I tend to agree!
  7. No matter what anyone does there is always going to be those grab it and go kinda hunter... I have always said that if you're complaining that you don't have a lot of time to hunt.. you certainly aren't taking the time to practice. If you have noticed anytime a management topic is put up.. one of the biggest excuses for why it isn't a good idea is because some hunters don't have a lot of time to hunt.. so there ya go. How do you guys feel about proficiency testing before getting a license? Just a question... be gentle.
  8. I think we should have as many weapon options as there is room. I'll vote for a hammer season if they can squeeze one in somewhere.
  9. Nothing beats the old Remington 870 dollar for dollar its a great shotgun... that is unless you're an automatic guy. I have a friend that is one of the top trap shooters in the northeast and he uses a 30 year old 870. Not that the Winchesters and Ithaca's aren't nice shotguns.. but for the money.. 870 for me every time.
  10. If you were sitting in a stand waiting for deer in the snowing and blowing that we had in central NY the last couple days you're probably still waiting..lol couldn't even track deer.. the snow was hiding the tracks before I could catch up to the deer that made them
  11. The herd reduction is also caused by the hunters.. every hunter can not continue to tag out in a given area if there already is a reduction in that areas population... the overall state deer heard hasn't shown any decline... although there are over hunted areas... think about it.. if a dozen hunters hunt the same small parcel of land without any regard for the population of deer in the area and everyone fills their tags.. you aren't going to see many deer in that specific area the following year. Unfortunately the tags are given out based on WMU populations and the DEC has no idea how many hunters are hunting what lands in that WMU. How was my spelling???
  12. That he was.. Jim jumped the buck along with a doe laying in a goldenrod field... the buck refused to leave the doe which contributed to his demise..lol
  13. It really depends on what shoots the best out of your gun... not all guns shoot the same bullets well

    CVA?

Its definitely not the caliber of TC but I have an older CVA flintlock and it shoots great... no problems with it at all
  15. Here is a 6-point my buddy Jim took on opening day in Onondaga County.. the buck grossed 111-0 B&C and netted 109 B&C. Bases were 5" and the brow tines measured 6" long. Sorry guys he got rid of the jaw before I could age it.
  16. Yes there are rogue coyotes.. usually male... they are shoved out of other packs by the alfa male as they get older. They will look for a pack that they can take over from an older or weeak alfa male. The tight pack structure keeps these young horny males from being able to breed every female in sight.
  17. Now thats a camp Bubba! Here is mine in Redfield NY... not really my hunting camp more my fishing & family camp. Oh Yeah.. and the infamous..OUTHOUSE!
  18. As long as we're doing math.. tell me how a population of 20,000 - 30,000 coyotes can have any affect on a deer population of over 1,000,000... although I'm sure there are exceptions because of different coyote/deer ratios in different locations but over all... I think people make way to much out of the whole coyote - deer thing. I do think they can altering a deer's normal traveling habits if the deer feel more threatened and there is some fawn kill but there are not enough coyotes statewide to cause the kind of damage guys tal about
  19. Absolutely true... the structure of the pack acually keeps things balanced.. take out the alfa male and female and thats when the $hi+ starts happening
  20. The drop in hunters has more to do with kids not coming up as hunters than it does about any license price increase.. and more so the fact that there is less local land for guys to hunt than there was 30 years ago. Nearly everywhere that I hunted 30 years ago has become a huge residential development. Most of my friends that use to hunt that have stopped is due to them getting married and having kids and momma not liking them running off hunting while she gets left home with the chillen'. Just a different time than it was before...
  21. I'm always curious to what story the guys tell when they poach a buck or a doe for that matter... the great part is everytime he tells the story he knows it isn't true and he has to live with the fact that he couldn't get a deer any other way..
