  1. We have a method for getting the continuation of beam across the point... using a piece of tape at the intersection of point and top of beam.. we run a string from one side of point to the other, holding the string on the top of the beam on each side.. then make a mark on the tape at the bottom of the point where the string passes through.. then measure the outside of the point (following the curve of point if there is one) from the tip of the point to the mark made. The image in the last post is just a poor image of the same thing. point must be at least 1" and must exceed the width at the base of the point.. you can call it a point if you like... it's just not a scorable one
  2. if you draw an imaginary line across top of beam through the point looks like the point falls short by an 1/8"... but that's just what I can see from pic..
  3. Yeah I can understand that... I was mainly referring to all wooded pieces...
  4. You really think you should be free to take as many of an endangered species as you want? The whole idea of game regulations and conservation is to keep people from totally eliminating animals with their greedy "take as many as you like" attitudes. That mindset is why many animals are on the endangered species list at all... the rules are there for a reason... not to piss people off... but to preserve wildlife species... oh yeah and sometimes to save people from themselves.
  5. Honestly I don't do much hunting there... mostly a family camp... I would rather be in the ADK's than tughill... that could change in the future though
  6. Yes... Maine can be some tough hunting... I have taken a few bucks there... tough terrain
  7. Unfortunately most hunters do nothing to improve the lands they hunt or the herds they hunt... and it will always be that way... I don't believe there is a general "hard natural way" to hunt... that is subjective... I'm positive your hard way to hunt isn't even close to mine... and mine may be easier than other hunters I know... the only end game in deer hunting is to kill deer legally... easily or hard depends on the individual and their hunting experience. It's not worse or better just different ways to get to the same end.
  8. I take I you never tried tracking a big buck in the big woods of the Adirondacks with a flintlock rifle? But I will agree, taking a mature buck with archery equipment at close range anywhere is a tough endeavor
  9. I'm sure in some cases the border may be the best stand site... but I think you missed my point... this border stand issue seems to be a common theme when we are talking about adjoining property owners not getting along... my point was.. if you found out the border was wrong and was actually 100's of yards away would you move your stand to the new border just because? As far as deer are concerned there are no borders... so I don't believe that every border is the ideal spot for a stand site... although I do realize that many adjoining properties, because of how the land is used have good edge at the borders which could be a reason why it is a good stand site.. maybe that's why hunters like property border stands... just seems to me that's the reason why lots of hunters don't see deer... they have a terrible stand site because they think they need to be on the border when maybe the best site is in the middle of the property. I'm just trying to understand the whole "put a stand on the property border" thing that seems to be a common thing.
  10. Old bar room deer head and 5' model canoe ... couple more angles in cabin
  11. outdoor sink at the camp... used some scrape hemlock I had laying around and a sink a friend of mine was tossing... still some work to be done on it, but a good start
  12. I have always wondered why hunters like to put their stands on the border line of their property... I would think stand placement would be determined based on deer movement and the likelihood of seeing deer in an area... I find it hard to believe that every border of every property is the best stand site... especially if all the properties involved are completely wooded... the whole stand on my border seems to be the biggest complaint on here when it comes to neighbor disputes... I'm curious if all the borders were moved 300 feet in any direction just as a test... would the hunters move their stands to the new border location? I'm not much of a stand hunter, but I think I'm missing something on the border stand logic.
  13. All butchers hang animals by their feet.. if its good enough for them it's good enough for me... I bet in the scheme of things it really doesn't matter though... kind of a "Do what you want to do, you will anyway" thing
  14. I think there is also an issue that this guy cut the tree without knowing the property boundaries... getting upset with somebody really for no reason... It is always better to confront another hunter respectfully face to face first... usually things can be worked out without getting stupid... people need to wait until there really is a problem instead of creating one before one exists.
  15. Scent control is a good thing while hunting, but no matter what most hunters think you will never be totally scent free... hunting the wind is paramount when hunting whitetails... 99% of the hunters can be smelled by 99% of the deer in the woods no matter how careful you are unless you are downwind from the deer. How much of you they smell and how alarmed they get depends on how much you stink... gassing up prior to entering the woods isn't the best idea if you're going to be stationary, but even the stinkiest hunters in the woods have killed deer. If you're a stand hunter I wouldn't approach your stand upwind after gassing up... cuz you're probably not going to see much on that sit... other than that.. gassing up before going into the woods might be better than running out of gas before you get to the woods... that might ruin your day of hunting
  16. There is a man that knows his stuff... very very nice work!! I'm impressed and I don't impress easy
  17. I'm not a huge fan of the pan banging drive either... not that it isn't effective... I just don't like the idea of trying to kill a deer running full out for it's life... those kind of drives tend to move the deer completely out of the area for a long time... using the drivers scent as the motivator for moving deer does not get them crazy... they are use to human scent and will just move on to where they feel safe again... often even circling around and back in behind the drivers... that's part of the cat and mouse game sometimes. Sometimes if you leave a watcher on the peripheral behind the drivers he will be the one that sees the deer as they double back. That can be a good tactic.
  18. 2 man drives work quite well if you're not into the whole group of guys thing... the key is just to get deer moving... once you have them up and about the chance of seeing one increases.
  19. You don't read well at all... go back to the part where I said you are hijacking almost all the threads with your crap. Believe me I usually try to avoid responding to your posts and fall prey to your trolling ... but it's getting harder because you're everywhere with your nonsense
  20. It makes sense that when the deer aren't going to come to you.. you need to go to them.. if you're sitting and waiting this time of year.. you might just be wasting a lot of time. If you're going to sit and wait... find a spot that overlooks a thicket, swamp, or any area that deer would feel safe... on gloomy mornings you may just catch deer coming back late from over night feeding...
  21. As for "canned" or "planted" hunts or farming deer...I have the right not to like them and say so... you have the right to not like my opinion or me saying so... get over it. This whole using the deer farming issue to troll for an argument is getting ridiculous and seems to be entering into almost every thread on the forum. Then as soon as you aren't getting enough attention on someone else's thread you start another to keep the nonsense going.
  22. I would have a little chat with the officer himself first... tell him that he's disturbing your hunting and you feel like you're being harassed... he can get upset if he likes about it but you have rights as a citizen and you should make sure he knows it... I would do it respectfully and tell him that you thought it would be better to speak to him directly first before going to his superiors... if he gives you attitude... then, go to his superiors. You may also offer to keep an eye out for him and notify him if you see anything suspicious.
