1 inch... BUT the base width of the tine can not exceed the hieght
  2. I sometimes use my Dad's old savage 12 ga. patterned after the Browning... it's about 60 years old and still looks like new.
  3. The reason they have to restock fish is because of all the game hogs that keep every fish in the stream or lake... and those that just feel like the catch limits don't apply to them.
  4. Good thing he doesn't like the the New Orleans Saints... she would have given him a lecture on the separation of church and state
  5. Agreed.. you will outgrow the 883 right away...
  6. wow.. where do I start? Metal detecting is my biggest hobby now... but I also collect stamps and coins... I dabble in photography... love woodworking... played lacrosse until I was 50... trained in Taekwondo for 20 some years taught for 10 of those years... and yes, a Harley too
  7. Should be able to get permits this year... there are extras being mailed to hunters and available to hunters across the state starting tomorrow.
  8. I'm sure that's true.. coyotes like most animals are opportunists when it comes to food... most predators will take the easiest road available to expel the least amount of energy when hunting for food if they can... most eastern coyotes are not pack hunters, but that changes out west and seems to be more prevalent in the ADK's as well... I believe its a learned thing and a necessity to pack hunt in some areas of the US in order to get enough food to survive.
  9. 180 for me usually... but I've killed a few bucks with 240's... a little overkill maybe but they literally knock a buck right of their feet... and hit like a Mack Truck... not as flat shooting, but they pack a mean punch to 100 yards
  10. Uh... yup... that's a mature buck alright... and a good one!
  11. Good for you young man... not for passing up young bucks, but rather for not having that "I need to kill a just any buck to prove I'm a hunter" mentality... it's a hard thing to do as a new hunter... you have a tough road ahead of you... killing mature bucks is not an easy thing... but I believe that the only way to achieve a goal is to work towards that goal... and consistently killing mature bucks comes from hunting mature bucks... good luck to you.
  12. Without really seeing it myself its hard to make a good plan for you... you may actually have an advantage if you stay below and wait him out.. Like Phade says.. he will likely change his routine once things get going a bit... he may use the same bedding area but be up and about longer.. come back later and leaving earlier... if there was snow on I would give trying to catch him in the bedding area a chance... the conditions right now are so not in your favor that it will be hard to get close enough without being busted... killing a mature bedded buck takes a lot of experience with snow and even more without... he's going to be hard to pick out if you do get up there... you could be looking right at him and not see him... and 99.9% of the time he'll see you first... I would get there early in the morning once he gets active and try to catch him coming back late to bed... the truth is he may not even bed there once the breeding season hits hard... but you might still have some time until that happens.. good luck.
  13. uphill bedding spots are tough to sneak up on... best bet is not to sneak uphill towards him but rather find a spot a ways away where you can get up the hill level with him with wind in your face then sneak in that way from on top... rule of thumb is if you think you're moving slowly your probably still going too fast... if it takes you all day to sneak up to him that's okay.
  14. Great buck.. nice photos too...
  15. Here are different ways to dry jerky http://www.nyantler-outdoors.com/jerky-drying.html
  16. with crunchy leaves you don't stand a chance... I would try a grunt call if he has been active... everything else isn't in your favor right now... wait until you get the right conditions to sneak closer to where he beds... use the wind or he'll bust you every time.... if he feels too much pressure you won't see him again... I'd wait him out for now and hope for snow...
  17. usually happens when a certain person is involved... not many threads he posts in that does n't have that reaction
  18. I said I never would.. but I find myself texting in the woods more and more... just can't fight great technology..
  19. I was just curious... you do realize that by this kid killing that albino.. more people got to see it than they ever would have in the woods... just sayin'.... yes we all have the luxury of choice when it comes to the animals we choose to take and I respect yours.
  20. Usually there are around 6-8 coyotes in a family unit.. most are juveniles with an Alfa male and Alfa female... there may be some rogue coyote males passing through the area as well on occasions.. but the family unit will defend their area against them. The real problem with just killing coyotes "willy nilly" is the chance that the Alfa male might be killed.. which invites more coyotes mostly rogue males into that area... hence, killing the Alfa male and sometimes even the Alfa female can result in an increase in the number of coyotes in that area until a new Alfa male or female is established...
  21. Remember that two hunters give off more human scent than one... I personally wouldn't want a stand close to another hunter... for that reason... actually that's one of the reasons I avoid stand hunting usually... it allows me to distance myself from other hunters when I need to... I never have the problem of having my hunt ruined by someone hunting close to me... it would be a shame if you took the week off and spent most of your time figuring a way to get to your stand or not seeing deer because you have too much human scent in the area... also if the wind is in his favor it probably won't be for you...
  22. I love coyotes.. beautiful animal and interesting how family units operate... I like coyote hunting, but not because I'm afraid they are a huge threat to the whitetail population... I don't believe any animal is more important than another... controlling the coyote population is important, but no more important than controlling the whitetail population.
  23. I have never been one to worry about young or old deer and better tasting meat or more tender.. I come from an old Italian family where all the cooks could make an old boot taste delicious
  24. I like both... especially when the meat comes WITH the antlers
