One of the first trips my son tagged along, he was about 10, we were still hunting/scoutning this pond edge in the catskills, by the Russel Brook. Swampy stuff, Big grass mounds, blowdowns, ect.. Saw some game trails, a few bear scat/prints.. We were silent, moving slow.. Then a LOUD growl, like we never heard before, (or since) from somewhere close, REALLYCLOSE. I slowly turned back, my son looked petrified, about to cry.. I'm kinda light complexion, but I probably looked like Casper at that moment myself. My son & I locked eyes, I loaded one in the chamber, & said "Time to go, follow me & we're backtracking out the same way.. " Never saw any animal, but I'm really glad for it.. Wife didn't want him to come in the first place, and if there was any type of 'incident' I'd be toast-ed!

Your getting great results, congrats.. I have canon, and have only fooled with the supplied software a little bit. I dable in mostly the freebie software so far.. Many recommend nn, going to check into it. 3200iso I sometimes get quite a bit. (indoor no flash sports) fredmiranda.com is a canon sight, but it usually has alot of pp tips & method tutorials, so it may be of some assistance to you. Some of the photo examples posted up there are breathtaking. Keep shooting!

+1 If your going for NYPD, all the best to you. They'll issue you a vest, pistol & badge, then YOU need to purchase about $4-5000 worth of equipment/uniforms. Plus, talking to POs already on the job will give you more insight into what people are using.. As for renting guns, I think in PA you can 'rent' firearms at the ranges..

I'm on Trailvoy.com, and they do get-together as well. They divided the country into 'chapters', but since were just NY, 'regional' meets would be more appropriate.. Would make scheduling a bit easier as well..

Check your library for Catskills hiking guides, and you'll find alot of land under an hour from Kingston.. I have & recommend the NJNY Trail Confrence Catskill map set. 5 or 6 maps, and enough places to get away for a lifetime.

He should have been back to his non-rut routine by pic time, so I'd be scouting that trail he's on for early Oct hunts, and his sheds.. Good luck

We ran up to Syracuse last week and I had to see at least 40 deer feeding on the steep inclines adjacent to I 81. Couldn't figure out why, but then it hit me.. It was the only land that was completely snow free..

I got the lifetime as well.. From what I understand, there is a federal requirement that states must have a SW Lisc program in place by a deadline, either 2012-13, in order to get federal funds for marine/fishing stuff. NYS jumped on early tax collection or sales, depending on your point of view, to stuff its own pockets before the fed puts its hands out.. Once the fed wants a cut, i'm sure the 10 will be increased.

Coming down I-81, saw a flock in a picked field, couldn't believe my eyes.. They were everywhere.. Not really a bird hunter, but I found it odd they were on the windy side of the hill, rather than somewhere out of the wind/rain..

The TOP line, big $$$ bows are amazing, and are very luring, but keep in mind the research technology filters though the lower product lines.. A new, entry package bow from a reputable manufacturer will be better than some off brand equipment or really old used stuff, plus most shops throw in some range time with a bow purchase.. Getting it fit & setup properly for you to shoot with maximum accuracy will kill more game then being 30 fps faster.. Whatever equipment you choose, get a bow with a 'hard back-wall' cam design. Simply, at full draw, the string stops. Shooting tips I can add, is use a release, use your release hand's thumb & a kisser button to anchor consistently. Good Luck, & welcome to bow hunting.

You will see alot less people, provided you don't try to hunt Westchester or Suffolk counties. Bow hunting is gaining more popularity every year with outdoor enthusiasts looking to extend their seasons. In more densely populated areas, you can get permission to bow hunt a bit easier than gun hunting. One BIG difference between gun & archery is, your nerves WILL be tested to the max when that deer is close enough to spit on.. Hard to explain, but the rush, when it happens is worth it..

Sorta related, current American Hunter has a review of the 'new' Ithaca 37 pump shotgun, and says they will service all Ithacas, regardless of who owned the company at time of manufacture..

I've done pickles and other veggies, no venison, yet. Another advantage is, one look at a home canned jar's lid & you'll know if if it's still good or not immediately. Can't do that with frozen, just estimate.

Hecksher Park has red & greys. When my son worked in the park, he said they den up under the pool in the filter room every winter. I think there is a den off the highway as well, cause I've seen them 'cruising' the road at odd hours of night in one section..

a 'No Kill Zone' around a feeder??? Are you guys serious?? Poachers shooting game out of season, headhunting & hacksawing skull caps, People shooting from houses, shooting from vehicles, sneaking in state parks, trespassing on posted & unposted lands without a care in the world, but the 'No Kill Zone' will be respected... If only we had Al Gore's' Lock Box'... NOT... I posted something along these lines a while ago.. Habitat improvement IS a vital piece of any program to a healthier deer herd, but I cant see a state-wide feeder program.. A partnership of the DEC with volunteers would be needed first off if anything was going to get done, because paid manpower would sink it outright without buying a single thing. If DEC could structure some type of work-core to get us involved, NY could be a 'big buck, public land destination'..
