So here's my question, using rational thought, what would you like to see? Not about guns hunters vs bow hunters vs crossbow hunters vs muzzle loader hunters. I am asking as a united front, what do you feel we should do? Try and keep your anger in check here and think. What are thoughts on ways to make us all happy? Bring back doe day to NY? Segment the 4 main seasons and not allow the use of other weapons during those seasons? Maybe create just 2 main seasons, bow and gun. Bow season is for vertical bows and crossbows only, the gun season for rifle, shotgun, and ML only. Then a 3 week late season where you can your weapon of choice. I am not sure they will ever make the seasons so we are all happy, but there has to be a middle ground most of us could live with. As for doe only and Ar's.....I think the 3" antler might be a good statewide compromise. Those who wait for the big bucks are happy, and those that will take a young buck are happy. Tags? What's the total we are allowed? 5? So, why not allow us to get those tags from the get go and be done with it. If I have a DMP for 4H then let me use it when I see fit. In a perfect hunting world, what would you like too see NY change.

My preference isn't in the options either. If I was bow hunting this season and had the time, I might let a doe pass for a week or two if I knew there was a large buck in the area. But, for me, the big picture is meat in the freezer. I won't shoot a doe with a fawn or a fawn, but a spike buck, each and every time it was legal. Also, I am not sure I will apply for a DMP this year, as I am not sure I will be hunting the SZ for sure yet. So, I only get one deer, and it has to be a buck, for my area I can shoot a spike as long as the horns are 3" from the base of the burr. Will I pass that on opening day? Probably not. My tummy is rumbling for venison.

LOL. Fair enough.

I see the point phade. I do. I just don't agree. If it's my own business, yes it's mine. I have to buy it from the manufacturer, they don't ship you things on good faith hoping you will pay them back. If the item doesn't sell, I am stuck with it, so I am pretty sure it's mine. But I don't think the OP meant years down the road either. It is more or less about using your discount and to buy items you plan to sell in the first place. Unethical, and yes, I feel it is a form of theft. Here's a question, say you loan me your car. It is never actually stated or made clear I have to return it and I don't, I sell it. Did I steal your car, OR did you give it to me?

Fished my tree stand
DirtTime replied to ForestWalker's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
Looks more like a blind then a stand. I would spray a few lines of at least some green on that to break it up just a little. -
Good point! But, Oh Boy.......
-
It's not ethical, and kind of a DB thing to do IMO. Those discounts are a perk of the job, with the employer offing you deals to make the company a better place to work. Incentive so to speak. If I owned a store/company and an employee did this to me, I would fire them on the spot. I would consider it theft. It shouldn't matter the size of a company, wrong is wrong. If you owned a store/company and caught an employee stealing what would you do?

I say again, the changes are pretty moronic, and might bleed into future seasons. I think some of you are just getting way to left of center here. I guess if this a war being created ( in your minds ) as gun hunters VS bow hunters, we are in deep shit! The way people are talking in this thread, I think I will start going out for a beer more often. I will LMFAO watching a bunch of drunk hunters square off in the parking lot because one group were were wearing Hoyt shirts, and the other group were wearing Remington shirts. The new age gangs! Realtree for bow, Mossy Oak for guns. Be sure to get your swag on! 'Cmon! But there's a bright side to people giving up hunting! For those of us that don't, we will get some great deals on used bows and guns! Also, less pressure on public land!

No waddin up here Law. I am the chubby guy in the black shirt. I brought some Busch Light I had hanging' around, regular Bud, and some Saratoga Lager. If you can get that lager in your area try it, it's pretty good. I was fine at night. Buddy had a heavy sweatshirt on sitting around the fire, I was in my tee-shirt and not cold. Sleeping I was a bit warm for me. It was around 55 so that's not bad. My sleeping bag is rated to 20, and I was sweating. I usually have a warm blanket as a back up but forgot it, that would have been enough for me. Buddy was in a 20 degree sleeping bag ( so he says ) and still slept in a sweat shirt. Not sure what he's gonna do opening weekend of the NZ deer season. Scouting was a little on the depressing side. Not much sign so far. They are seeing does with fawns, but no bucks. Not a lot of tracks either. But, across the road they leveled about 80 acres of trees. For some reason, I have a bad feeling about that. Though, I have to say, we never really had birds ( the garden variety ) down in the camp area before. A crow here and there, Blue Jay once in a while, but not all them little buggers that make a ruckuss all day. This trip they were all over the place. Some chipmunks too.

No need for condoms and no hookers with diseases. Not sure how you camp wooly, but um, I now know enough to not invite you camping. We set up camp, cut up more fire wood, and then took a break. Then I headed out to look an area over for deer sign. I got back to camp and tested out some shotgun ammo. Then the beer drinking began. We ate good but nothing great on this outing. Next trip will be great food. Saturday I got up and did a little more scouting, grabbed some breakfast then we took a drive around Sacandaga Lake. After supper my friend the owl paid us a visit. I got a picture but it's bad. Camera on my phone isn't so great. Took a picture of one of the many gnarly trees around the area. We got up the morning after over sleeping ( too much beer last night ), and took everything down and cleaned up. It was a good weekend, but I did miss not having my four wheeler to drive down to the creek to wash up. Buy the time I walked back up the hill I was sweating and wondering what the point was.

I have to take meds for acid and all that good internal crap. I love my hot foods. Now I pay the price. Doesn't stop me! Still like my spice to make me sweat, nose run, and eyes water.

You want pics Law, you will have pics. TY grampy.

No, no popcorn. I am not a big fan and neither is my buddy. He's bringing trail mix and I am just taking nacho chips as a snack. But, I am thinking of taking a few green tomatoes from my garden and cooking them up in foil for supper o Saturday. Not the best way to cook them, but sometimes you have to improvise.

Leaving in the morning for a weekend at camp/deer camp. No four wheeler this trip, I have to replace the connector on my trailer. Still looking forward to the tent and cot, scouting, canned beef and canned taters for lunch tomorrow, Mountain House Chili-Mac for dinner, a few cold beers, and just being in the woods! Saturday, up before dawn, boil water, quick cup of coffee, then sit for a few hours watching a swamp. 9am BF break. More coffee and some corned beef hash. Walking the back ridge and re-working natural ground blinds. Lunch about 1pm, Hormel beef stew! Afternoon cutting wood to dry for deer camp. Just to be safe, maybe setting up the tarp over the tent as Sunday is calling for rain. Adjust natural blind near camp, Mountain House Spaghetti for dinner, then more cold beers and a couple rounds of chess. Yeah, no fancy steak meals on this trip, too much work to get done in daylight hours. In two weeks, bacon wrapped steak, fire cooked baked taters, and corn on the cob.

Well, I love hunting with the bow too. If you look at the NZ ( which most of you don't ) you will see that you can use a ML to take a doe in most areas, but not a bow or shotgun or rifle! That irritates me too, and I have said so. These changes aren't a war on bow hunters. It's effective across all the seasons in the SZ. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28605.html I have seen hunters making petitions here and other sites for fall turkey season and dove hunting, but I didn't find one petition to try and stop this from happening to deer hunting. Now, you are looking over a puddle of spilled milk and wondering what happened and why. That's what makes no sense! Coulda, shoulda, woulda. No one in this state will ever be happy about any hunting change.
-
Just my personal preference to want something in the middle. Not lead, not steel. I really have no justification for wanting a non-toxic shot that's not steel. I guess if you really have to rationalize it, take turkey hunting with a shotgun as an example. Some like open sights and some use a scope. It's just a personal choice.

Catskills Land - What to look for?
DirtTime replied to BizCT's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
Looks like $60,000 in that area will get around 4-8 acres as an average. If he's willing to drive an extra two hours he can get 4 acres and a cabin for $50,000. http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/0-Center-Line-Rd-Providence-NY-12074/2105348119_zpid/ Plenty of state land near there and good fishing in the streams and lakes in the area. It's also about 20/30 minutes from the Sacandaga Lake. I have been bugging my g/f to put a bid in, but, She says "House" first, my camp later. -
There's the reality. Another note, that I am sure will not go over well is this; Suburban hunters make up a good percentage of NY deer hunters. Driving for less then a half hour from home is a norm these days. Some hunters have become complacent in hunting areas where they hear weed whackers and can see the local Stewerts from a tree stand. Why not use it to your advantage or as a growing/learning experience? Venture out beyond the land of street lights and city limits! Like I said, this is a load of crap dropped on us, but it's done. If you even think about giving up hunting because of this, and are not willing to improvise, adapt, and overcome, maybe you aren't really a hunter at heart.

Thanks bkln, I did read that earlier today. I also looked up dealers near me. Two about 30 minutes away. I never got a chance to call either. Or the local gun shops near me to ask. Been one of those days. I also really don't want to mail order ammo. ( Not even sure they have that fixed in NY anyway) I really like going into the shop and looking around, even just to buy ammo. You never know what you might find a deal on. Couple of the areas I want to hunt greys this fall are non toxic only, so I need an alternative. I really don't want to use steel shot ( personal choice here people, please don't read anything into it ).
-
They look great! Still space on that wall for a few more though!
-
It depends, like SteveB said, a newer compound has a lot of let off and easy to hold for a bit. Traditional bows ( long bow and recurve ) have the same weight at full draw. When the deer is close to my range limit and at a point I feel I can draw the bow without being seen I draw.
-
I am trying to find an alternative to the basic lead shot, But I don't want steel shot. Spent a couple hours looking around the web, I found Nice Shot and another company, American something that slips my mind at this time. No prices. Does anyone here know of a non-lead shotgun shell that is also not steel shot and doesn't cost $40 a box of 10?

I been saying the same damn thing for the year I have been a member here. If you want a change you need to get off your ass! When it comes to dove hunting, there we a ton of petitions. Deer, where? I didn't see one petition! It was "Email and express your feelings!". I guess dove hunting is more important. Seriously, where were the petitions for deer hunting? Maybe I missed them.
