  1. Everyone already dais the same things I would say. I will add this though, as a first bow get something with a lot of adjust ability you can do at home. One I shot recently was a Diamond Infinite Edge. For me it felt good in my hand and was quiet and smooth. The backwall was just a little soft, but that didn't hurt the accuracy or holding the draw. For the price this is a good beginner bow if feels good when you shoot it. Good luck and whatever you buy enjoy it!
  2. Hater? I don't hate them, I just know what kind of chaos they can create on game animals and us as hunters need to do something and the DEC needs to start addressing the issue. I have a question for you Curmudgeon, how would you handle this situation: The land I hunt in the NZ we also camp on during the Summer. For the past three years the coyotes have grown in numbers and are not so skittish at night. Each year we hear them get at least one deer in the middle of the night and they are starting to get closer and closer to our camp each year. We camp in a tent. Last year a pack of at least 4 started making a lot of noise around 8pm on our first night, they were withing 50 yards of us and we could not see them. The next night at about 1am the did it again, and at what sounded like the same distance. What would you do if a pack came walking into your camp at night and all you have is a tent for shelter?
  3. Awesome grampy! Great pics. Thats how we teach, let them lead and then just guide them when they get off track!
  4. You just defeated your own purpose! Deer are not targeting people as a food source. When was the last time a fox or a squirrel attacked a human? Why don't you preach this to the parents of that 2 year old that a coyote came right into the garage, or better yet, talk this to that dude that was attacked while walking to work! And don't try that "Isolated Incident" crap anymore! It works like a busted toilet! Did I EVER state killing a coyote would help me or anyone kill a deer, rabbit, etc...? No, I did not. I did make a mention that they sure as hell do make it harder for us! Yes, yes I did! Now you will say again, I don't like the competition. NO! No I do not! To be honest, I don't think of them as competition! I think of them as a plague that once it takes over, that's all there is left! I absolutely refuse to make a comment on "Gods Dogs"! I have never shot first and ask questions later at anything! No I have never watched them, not like you mean. Let me ask you this Curmudgeon? Are you a hunter or do you just want to protect everything that can and will kill what you hunt?
  5. Some nice deer in that whole area! I doubt you will have a hard time selling it for a profit. Even with no power. I still wouldn't do to much, maybe clear the area for a driveway/parking area and let the next owner decide what to do. They may not even want to put a camp on the land. Just hunt it. So the less you do the more if that makes sense.
  6. Nice biz. I heard splitting them like that is better for a grill, but I have never tried it. Does it really help? Now about that beer......I know people who use it to bate yotes instead of skunk urine. LOL...J/K.
  7. First I would like to ask the staff to create a group called "Coyote Haters Club" and add anyone who wants to be in that group. Count me in! Second, they are a nuisance! They kill everything we try to hunt! So yes I am in objection to to those damn hell dogs killing deer, rabbits, squirrels, turkey and every other game animal I pay to hunt for! So yes I say let us have an all year season with no bag limits and this might seem harsh, but kill the pups too. If you want to get rid of cockroaches you don't just kill the one you saw in the sink. You have to annihilate the nests! Or the infestation will grow. Then again, maybe you are pro roach to.
  8. I am more then happy if my groups are inside a half dollar. A quarter is great! A nickel I do somersaults in the woods. If they touch great, if not, like I said, a 3 shot group inside a half dollar ( or even 3 inches ) is fine by me. In my opinion, if you shot at the target 5 times and theres only one hole, you probably missed the target 4 times. Sorry, I had too add my 50cents. LOL Now back to your topic..............I apologize for this brief interruption.
  9. Where does it say anything about a muzzleloader qualification? Is there even such a thing as a muzzleloader 'permit'? http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html It says you have to have completed the combo which is archery and the basic hunter education. I am not aware of any specific muzzleloader training certificates. Crossbow falls under archery right? I did not know my old cert for the bow would not allow me to hunt with a crossbow without taking a recert class. I was 22 when I took my archery class. Long time ago.
  10. Welcome. Soon this place will get busy with more and more trail cam pics and and pics of happy hunters with their kills. Turkey, deer, duck, and all things great to eat. What growalot says it true.
  11. Getting ready to fire up the grill and drop a steak and some Maine Steamers in the side. I know they are the cheapy clams, but they still taste good to me. 50 for $7. So Fletch, dinner will be around 7, BYOB. LOL
  12. I think it was a joke. That $3000 a hunt was me being a wise guy and he took it from there. But, if not............ I am not sure how the licensing works to be a guide in NY, but I am sure the insurance on such a venture would be astronomical in this day and age. It's not like asking a buddy to help you put in a new carpet, if a client gets hurt there's an 70% chance they will sue you. Um, and yeah, 109,000 acres is huge! So it would either be part of the ADK Park or you know a lot of people who would give you permission to not just hunt their land, but use it as a business and make money from their land. Also, people who pay for hunts aren't going to pay to sit on the ground. Blinds and stands will need to be bought and placed. 1000 acres of just your land? That's a lot of sitting positions. Dude! Chop, chop! You need to stop posting here and get busy! You only have a month to get this all done!
  13. That's a good point. Here's another mystery, why can you take a deer of either sex in the NZ with a muzzleloader, but not a crossbow, bow, shotgun or rifle?

  15. Well here they are. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28605.html I wonder why they have no crossbows allowed in 4J this season? Still no crossbow for the early bow seasons.
  16. Deer and Bear Season Dates: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28605.html At least that's what's posted at DEC.
  17. Hey a few days in the woods hunting is better then not hunting at all. You have to look at it that way to keep from going crazy. It is sneaking up really fast. My main plan went out the window. Bow broke and a loss of local public land put me in a different direction. Bought a rifle. So I will probably only be hunting private land in a buck only WMU this year. I may still apply for a DMP for an area in the SZ, but the summer is pretty booked up now and trying to get time to get out there and scout really isn't in the cards and I hate hunting blind. ESPECIALLY on public land with a bunch of other hunters in there. Preparation: So far only picked up a few tarps and some cloth to put over a couple of the natural blinds I built last year. Will be up there in two weeks to get that set up and get a bunch of fire wood stocked for a late October deer hunting/camping trip. Going to walk the areas deer were in last and see if the are still moving in the same areas and walk other areas to see what's going on. Hoping to get a ladder stand and get that set up over looking a small swamp that is about 100 yds from a bedding area. I also want to try and get permission to hunt two other areas that border by buddies parents property. Plan: Get that permission, scout as much as I can, make sure my sitting spots are ready, and the weekend just before opening day get out and make sure the rifle is still on. I really don't want to shoot a spike, but, if he's a decent size he will find a new home in my freezer. I also want to do a lot more still hunting ( that's what I was taught it was called, walk a few feet, stop and look for a while, repeat ) this season.
  18. If you don't mind me asking where is the land? If it borders one of the forests in the 2500 acre range that would be Lassellsville, or Peck Hill. Rockwood is much smaller and Shaker is twice that size. Apart from the small sporadic stamps here and there the rest is all the big ADK Park. I don't know that area like the back of my hand, but I am a bit familiar with it. I would keep it and make a camp. Clear enough to drop in a 15x20 shed and there ya go. No need for power from a pole, use a generator. Get a wood stove installed and roasty toasty. You can also carry water. If you really feel the need to sell it then I wouldn't do much. The next owner will be a hunter most likely and they will will be able to set things up they way they want.
  19. I agree. This is the time of year when the fawns are still pretty vulnerable. So we should be able to kill them all year. Yup. Looks like at least 5 reasons to get some target practice in.
  20. Do you own or have a legal right to allow a guide service on the 109,000 acres?
  21. Exactly! Dude, I hope with all my heart and soul you were being sarcastic with this one. You are setting up to make a vested profit to your operation. Instead of being worried about the possible situation, and actually giving a rats ass about deer hunting in NYS in general and the true repercussions and impact this might have, you are setting up to get paid. The passion you seem to have about a serious issue leading to you making money is kind of sad. This post shows you don't really seem to care about hunting as sacred and passed down from generation to generation. You almost come across as wanting this travesty to happen. It's a pretty thin line you have created. So where do you stand? Are you hoping they get this figured out or are you all about the money?
  22. Actually caught some old black and white reruns of Gilligans Island today.
  23. My first encounter with my g/f's dad was hilarious. The g/f lived in an apartment downstairs from her parents at the time. The whole house was smoke free, you want a ciggy you went outside. The g/f heads to the shower, I go outside for a smoke. A few seconds later her dad comes out for a smoke. He didn't notice me so I thought I would be polite and introduce myself. As I start up the steps to the driveway, I watch him walk to the corner of the garage, lift his leg and let one go that would have created a crack in the ground if he was sitting! The he shakes his leg, wiggles and walks a few steps away. I was sort of shocked, then I busted out laughing. He shot around and his face turned as red as a brick. That was my first introduction to my future father-in-law.
  24. Nice LI OUTDOORSMAN. Where's the pics of the bugs? We used to catch them when we went swimming in the Schoharie Creek. Or at times we/I would just go looking for them. Got me out of the house and gathered some food. I have known people who have even made or bought traps to catch them. The down side to getting them on your own, they are not always the biggest. But it's fun, you get out of the house and get some exercise. I wish I knew more people who liked them, it would make it worth while to spend a day catching them. @Fletch, Most of the people I know wouldn't know great eats from a hot dog! LOL. Next time I will drop a note, you are only 4 hours from me.
