Spooking Does and Fawns - Can it Ruin Your Chances?
DirtTime replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
Spooking deer can't make them leave for very long. In the days of old when hunters wore blue jeans and did a lot of drives they would hunt the same areas often, and continue to do drives and still kill deer. -
Congrats to your dad on a dandy buck.

Will it?

Congrats to those who dropped deer today, some dandy bucks killed. I tapped out at 11:30. @grampy says tomorrow's a magic day, so I'll head back out in the AM. -

Haven't sat this blind since early October. Figured the wind is good at S/E, and I'm not filling any tags sitting on the couch. So far notta. -
243 winchester vs 44 magnum for deer which would you pick ?
DirtTime replied to phantom's topic in General Chit Chat
A .44 lever jumps a wee bit. -
The deadly house cat! The harbingers of evil. I have watched the neighborhood cats gets slammed by blue jays when the cat got stupid and went after it under my bird feeder. So while possible a plain old kitty cat may get a poult or two, I can't see them being a huge factor, especially if one is actually hunting the woods not suburbia. I have yet to see a house cat romping the woods miles away from a city, and rarely see them in some of the suburbs I hunt. One exception is I did see them somewhat often in the Pine Bush, but that whole area is surrounded by houses more or less, so it was only par for the course to see them in there. Red squirrels and chipmunks running over my boots is one thing, a cat rubbing on my boot and purring was another.

That a valid point @LET EM GROW. I have seen AR15's with longer barrels. A few I looked at last Spring had a 24" barrel. I was looking for one and the few I found in stock were the longer barrels. If not for all the craziness I would have bought one, but I refused to pay $1200 for a $500 rifle. I'm still curious why there are people who would like NY to allow buckshot for deer but say the .223 isn't a solid option. Given the choice between those two I would take the .223. I won't shoot at running deer which is about the only thing 00Buckshot is good for in my personal opinion. Or extremely close range. But the range shouldn't make the argument as any good deer rifle will kill deer just as dead at 20 yards as it will at 150 yards. I see a few people toting AR's around me, they may be 10's, but the mags seem to small to be .308. So I would guess they are .223.

Say what on that last part? I can't even.................................. When I think scout rifle I either think a lever action or a short bolt action, short action bolt ( not the same thing here ) that's easier to carry trekking long distances. But seeing a scout rifle is a carbine by technical gibberish that's not the case. I would go .243. Interesting article on the Scout Rifle. I like this thinking on the 7mm-08. https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/rugers-scout-rifle-total-waste-your-time-98992 -
Aside from seeing and hearing turkeys by our camp, that were never there in the past 8 years I've been camping and hunting up there I have seen turkeys popping up in a few other places they never used to be, while areas that had birds seem to be quiet. 4 miles down the road from me there was a flock with poults that showed up late last Spring and are still hanging out in that field. Everyone is so fast to jump on predation and all of a sudden poaching, but another problem is often over looked. Development. Around here condo developments are popping up all over the place. The flock I mentioned above was probably having a great time hanging out a few miles away then all of a sudden that land is no longer woods. They have to go somewhere. I don't see the turkey population suddenly boosting the economy and getting jobs to buy a condo to stay where they were. They are going to move to areas where they feel safer. I'm not saying predators aren't hurting numbers, it would be insane to think that way. I just wonder how many people who say turkey numbers are dropping live in the burbs next to large cities that are getting larger, or where housing developments and strip malls are going up in record fashion these days.

My wife had a flock behind her on this mornings hunt. They have been back in that area for a few years now. They roost right behind the camp my buddy and I have.

Bloody 21* up here. Crunchy walk in. -
True, but I don't think I'll be hunting Monday morning, so I'm still OK with it.

The first year my wife hunted I stayed withing 50-70 yards of her. Now, she's fine with the fact that I drop her in her spot and head out a few hundred yards away.

My wife prefers to carry that rifle. It's light and she likes shooting it more then the heavier Howa.

I asked the same question on farting many years ago, and I was serious. With everyone so worked up about scent control asking about farting is actually a valid question. If you drop a bunch of money on scent control clothing, laundry detergent, cover scents, and all that jazz surely farting must be a concern.

In the end we all technically get an extra hour of sleep tonight. Works for me getting up at 4AM tomorrow.

Not for you guys who never leave the SZ it isn't. This will be hunt #6 for me toting a firearm. We've had this talk before, if I remember right you said you'd rather hunt Ohio then the Adirondacks. Something about the price of gas and Ohio being easier to hunt. The 08 got the call. It was really more or less a debate in my mind of taking the CVA or the Howa. I'll have plenty of opportunities to carry the ML once the regular season opens down here.
