I hit a buck a few years back, my arrow clipped a branch and it still flew true but only stuck in about 5", right behind the shoulder. We gave it 4 hours and there wasn't a lot of blood to go on but we found him bedded and dead about 300yds away. 5" is more than it sounds at times. Hopefully you get lucky! Is it possible you clipped a branch before it got to the deer? The "ridge" that runs down the shoulder blade is pretty thick and hard. A deer that beds 100 yds from the shot is hit pretty hard, how long after the shot did you jump him? Could you have hit the shoulder knuckle? Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Pics! I'm starting to forget what bucks look like! Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

can you explain why hunters would want to shorten gun season?

You do have a chance to hunt the peak rut now. You choose not to, that's on you... Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk -

Too easy... Ha. Good one! Bowhunting is way too easy, so I go for a rifle instead, way more challenging.... Makes sense. You never fail to humor me. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk -
I don't think there are any deer within half of a mile of here, otherwise I'd have heard them already... Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Thanks for the info! I have a jawbone from a monstrous doe I shot 4 years ago too I still need to send in so I'll look into the rates and details more. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

I was thinking that same age range, her frame was very stocky, she just didn't have the extra long features (face) I expected. Her feet were large. I've killed quite a few deer in the same area and some that were 2.5+ for sure and although a bit heavier, none had extensive wear on their teeth. My guess is her weight was going back down due to older age. I do agree that deer are a lot like people, they can vary greatly in shape, size, potential etc. I just threw her jawbone in the freezer, I'm going to send in the incisors for sure. Mature old does are underrated trophies for sure, especially public land. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

She can't be 1.5 with teeth like that unless she lived on sugar sticks and soda the last year and a half, I was thinking 1.5 based on weight alone. The teeth tell a far different story. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Yep, all alone and dry. This big chunk is bow only so the deer tend to get more age on them, I shot a big doe last year, she weighed 120# dressed and her teeth were no where near this doe's. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Yep, 98# hanging dressed. I was figuring she was a plump 1.5yr old at first. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Yesterday I shot a decent sized doe, not the biggest I've killed for sure, she scaled in at 98lbs dressed to be exact. When I was gutting her I noticed she had strange "bone spur" type things on both hind feet which stuck out quite a ways and kept her toes spread wide apart. I just finished breaking her down and decided to take a quick look at the teeth just for the hell of it, wow, I would've never guessed this deer was over 2.5 at the high end judging by appearance. Here's a few pics of the feet and the teeth. Any guesses on age? Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Do You Support Crossbow Full Inclusion into the NY Archery Season?
chrisw replied to tughillmcd's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Maybe he doesn't believe you because if he bought into everything you say he'd be shooting deer straight up the bunghole and hoping Jesus makes it right... Just because you had one experience doesn't make it gospel either, I've also had deer at 50 yds trotting through and wouldn't even stop to look at me when I yelled out loud, there are exceptions to every rule. The point to where this conversation is currently I think is that you probably shouldn't be taking any different shots than you did/could with a compound. The crossbow doesn't have laser guiding systems, and 60 yds is quite a stretch in a archery hunting scenario, compound or crossbow. I think most people forget, bowhunting is about how close you can get, not how far away you can shoot. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk -
That pic with him gazing onto the horizon with binoculars should be the next Cabela's fall hunting cover! Priceless! Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

I shot her with a spitfire Maxx head, the entrance is higher than you can really see in the pic, she was 6yds away and quartered away so it exited right out the opposite front leg, cut the top of the heart off. I've shot 3 deer and a coyote now with those heads and none went over 50 yds. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

6 yd shot. She ran 40. That spitfire Maxx ate her up Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Few new faces... The boys still don't seem to be too daylight friendly yet here in 7M. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

I'm off for the next 2 weeks, now if someone could remind these deer they are supposed to be haphazardly running around the woods rutting I'll be all set... Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Did I miss something? At what point were coyotes established in NY and then eliminated from NY!? If this is true I'd like some facts. And anyone who thinks it could be done again is a fool... Hell, some members on here complain that they're behind every tree and they can't seem to kill even one!? You will never wipe them from a landscape completely and anyone who thinks that's a good idea even if we could is flat out ignorant. They have a place in nature, the same as the deer. And no I'm not a coyote lover, in fact I take every shot I get during the season but I'm intelligent enough to realize they have their job to do too. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Yes indeed you can kill 2 bucks in archery down toward the city in a few areas (don't remember where exactly), only reason I know is because a couple seasons ago a guy posted the same and he got jumped all over here and turns out he was 100% legal in his area. Biz might know the actual areas. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

I want to love Montec's but I've shot 4 deer with them in the past and not a single one left a good blood trail even on perfect hits. Granted all deer died within 50 yds but.... Also I had a heck of a time getting a razor sharp edge on them, even with the G5 stone. Every year I consider going back to them but I just can't talk myself into the benefits...
